The new successor to Ferrari's V8-engined special series - the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale.

Ferrari 488 Pista

The Ferrari 488 Pista, which will be unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, is the successor to Ferrari's V8-engined special series - the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale - which have received critical acclaim for their performance and undiluted handling.

The Ferrari 488 Pista marks a significant step forward from the previous special series in terms of both sporty dynamics and for the level of technological carry-over from racing. The name is, in fact, a direct homage to Ferrari's unparalleled heritage in motor sports.

The car's development evolved directly from the company's involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship - where it has won five Manufacturers' titles in the GTE class in the six years since the series' inception, taking 29 out of 50 races - and 25 years' experience in running the Ferrari Challenge one-make series.

The Ferrari 488 Pista's extensive weight saving solutions, along with engine, vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic developments all derive from Ferrari's racing cars: the 488 GTE and the 488 Challenge. The result is a car with an uncompromising mission: to offer track-like performance on and off the road, even when in the hands of non-professional drivers.

Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90 kg less (1280 kg dry) which, when combined with the largest ever increase in engine power for a special series car (+50 cv), results in a new benchmark for Ferrari's V8 sports cars.

Its engine is the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history and is an extreme evolution of the turbo unit that has won the overall International Engine of the Year award titles in both 2016 and 2017.

It punches out 720 cv with the highest specific output of in its class (185 cv/l) and is now lighter too, thanks to solutions adopted from the 488 Challenge, including Inconel exhaust manifolds and lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, but also thanks to additional features, such as titanium con rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums.

The 488 Challenge also supplies the turbos with integrated rev sensors along with the design of the air intake line which has been moved from the flanks to the rear spoiler area to ensure a cleaner flow of air.

Torque is higher than the 488 GTB at all engine speeds, delivering a feeling of consistently smooth, powerful acceleration with even faster turbo response times despite the increase in power.

The engine sound is unique and unmistakably Ferrari, as such a special car warrants. Both the sound quality and the intensity are higher than the 488 GTB in all gears and at all engine speeds in proportion with the progressive increase in power.

The Ferrari 488 Pista makes full use of Ferrari's motor-sports experience for maximum aerodynamic performance even on the road. Among the racing solutions adopted is the front F1-inspired S-Duct and the design of the front diffusers which feature a ramp angle that was optimised for the 488 GTE to create strong suction for increased downforce.

The underbody vortex generators have also been redesigned, and the rear diffuser incorporates the same double kink as the 488 GTE to increase the air extraction and downforce generation compared to a traditional diffuser. In addition, the rear blown spoiler is higher and longer and the shape has been optimised. The final result of all these interventions is an impressive 20% increase in downforce.

The vehicle dynamics were designed to enhance driving pleasure and make the car's full potential available to all drivers, professional or otherwise. The objective was to make the car's performance on the limit easier to reach and control.

Say hello to the new 'special series' Ferrari 488 Pista!

Ferrari has finally whipped the covers off its new 488 Pista, the latest in the Maranello-based automaker’s line of V8-engined special series models.

Ferrari says its new 488 Pista – set to make its public debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March – marks a “significant step forward” from the previous special series in terms of both dynamics and “level of technological carry-over from racing”.

Indeed, the Italian brand says the 488 Pista’s “extensive weight saving solutions”, along its uprated engine and aerodynamic developments, all derive from its 488 GTE and 488 Challenge racing cars. The result, it says, is “impeccable track-like performance on and off the road, even when in the hands of non-professional drivers”.

At 1280 kg dry, the new model weighs some 90 kg less than the 488 GTB. And the brand says the Pista benefits from the “largest ever increase in engine power” for a special series car.

That makes the Pista’s powerplant the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. How powerful? Well, the 3,9-litre eight-cylinder now churns out 530 kW and 770 N.m, resulting in a top speed of 340 km/h and a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 2,85 seconds (and a 0-200 km/h dash in a mere 7,6 seconds). In addition, Ferrari says the intensity of the engine sound is higher than that of the 488 GTB “in all gears and at all engine speeds”.

Aerodynamic tweaks include the addition of an “F1-inspired” s-duct up front, along with the new front diffusers, which make for increased downforce, plus a higher and longer rear spoiler. The result, says Ferrari, is a 20% increase in downforce compared with the 488 GTB.

Ferrari says other updates, such as further development of the mechanical set-up and the electronic dynamic controls integrated into version 6 of the so-called “Side-Slip Angle Control” system, make the car’s full potential available to “all drivers, professional or otherwise”. In addition, the brand has introduced new software to adjust the brake pressure at the calipers.

Ferrari 488 Pista revealed with 711bhp V8 derived from racing

The best supercar in the world just got lighter, punchier and even more focused; it's the most powerful V8 Ferrari yet produced

The new Ferrari 488 Pista dispatches the benchmark 0-62mph as quickly as the Italian brand’s halo model, the LaFerrari.

The 488 Pista – a more powerful, lighter variant of the 488 GTB, just as the 458 Speciale was to the 458 – covers 0-62mph in 2.85sec, while the official quoted figure for the LaFerrari is “under 3.0sec”.

The model uses the most powerful V8 in Ferrari’s history and is described as an “extreme evolution” of the turbo unit that won International Engine of the Year in both 2016 and 2017.

The 3.9-litre twin-turbo engine produces 711bhp at 8000rpm and 568lb ft of torque at 3000rpm. Top speed is up to 211mph. Performance figures from its key rival, the range-topping Porsche 911 GT2 RS, are near-identical, achieving 0-62mph in 2.8sec and a top speed of 211mph.

Ferrari claims the 488 Pista is “a significant step forward” from the previous special series in terms of sporty dynamics and the level of technology carried over from racing. The name – meaning ‘track’ in English – is a nod to the brand’s motorsport heritage.

The engine, vehicle dynamics, weight saving and aerodynamics are all derived from the 488 GTE and 488 Challenge race cars. Ferrari said the result is a car that offers track-like performance on the road and on circuits.

The dry weight is 90kg less than a standard 488 GTB’s, at 1280kg. In addition, an extra 49bhp in engine power has ensured this is Ferrari’s most powerful V8 yet.

The weight decrease comes from features used on the 488 Challenge. These include Inconel exhaust manifolds and lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, plus titanium con rods and carbonfibre intake plenums.

The 488 Challenge also supplies turbos with integrated rev sensors, while the air intake line has been moved from the flanks to the rear spoiler to help achieve better airflow.

Torque is higher than the 488 GTB’s at all engine speeds, and the quality and intensity of the engine sound, Ferrari says, are higher than the 488 GTB in all gears and at all revs.

Overall, there is a 20% improvement in downforce, according to Ferrari. The Pista has an F1-inspired S-duct and redesigned front and rear diffusers from the 488 GTE.

The Pista also introduces the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, which is a world first. It uses Ferrari software to adjust the brake pressure at the calipers, benefiting handling in corners.

Ferrari has also updated its Slideslip Angle Control system, first seen on the 458 Speciale, which offers advanced stability control akin to a drift mode. The car uses Ferrari’s magnetorheological suspension set-up.The Pista will be available with 20in carbonfibre wheel rims, a first for Ferrari. Other carbonfibre parts include the engine cover, bumpers and rear spoiler.

Order books for the 488 Pista will open after the car’s official debut at the Geneva show in March. It is expected to cost from £215,000.

The arrival of the 488 Pista, which has been rumoured for many weeks, follows in the footsteps of models such as the 458 Speciale, 430 Scuderia and 360 Stradale, all considered the halo variants for their respective models. None was a limited-production model but was typically in production for only two or three years.

530 kW Ferrari 488 Pista Revealed

Ferrari has officially revealed its new special series 488 Pista, which is a lighter and more powerful version of the 488 GTB.

The upcoming Geneva Motor Show will host the reveal of the new Ferrari 488 Pista, which draws from the Maranello-based firm’s experience in the FIA World Endurance Championship and succeeds previous V8-powered special series cars such the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale.

The lightweight Pista, meaning ‘track’, aims to offer ‘impeccable track-like performance on and off the road, even when in the hands of non-professional drivers’ according to Ferrari.

Weighing in at 1 280 kg, some 90 kg less than the 488 GTB, the 488 Pista is fitted with the most powerful V8 in Ferarri’s history, a biturbo 3.9-litre V8 that produces 530 kW and 770 Nm of torque.

Those are big numbers which result in small acceleration figures. Zero to 100 kph? 2.85 seconds. Zero to 200 kph? 7.6 seconds. Top speed? 340 kph. Ferrari says that the 488 Pista delivers both higher sound quality and intensity than the 488 GTB in all gears and at all engine speeds. Downforce has increased by as much as 20% over the 488 GTB too, thanks to racing solutions such as the F1-inspired S-Duct and front diffuser design.

The timing of the Ferrari 488 Pista is spot on, as rivals Porsche has just launched a new version of its GT3 RS supercar.

What do you think of this new Ferarri 488 Pista?

Awesome cars but the interior needs a rethink, Look at the Lambos interior even the maclarens with the folding screen instrument cluster in track mode - Ferrari feels a bit dated

The more track focused cars have no dedicated infotainment screen. The more road focused cars like the GTC4 Lusso & Portofino have the 10.1" jobbie in the centre stack.

Take that GT2 RS, Ferrari unleashes 530kW 488 Pista

If Porsche drew a line in the sand last year with its seriously potent GT2 RS, Ferrari has well and truly crossed it.

Set for its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show early in March, the new 488 Pista follows in the tracks of previous track-biased special editions like 458 Speciale, 430 Scuderia and 360 Challenge Stradale. That means it’s a lighter, more powerful and sharper handling version of an otherwise normal road going model, which in this case is a 488 GTB.

The term ‘otherwise normal’ hardly seems appropriate though, as a regular 488 is already equipped with 492kW and 760Nm. The Pista, however, makes a mockery of these outputs and bumps them up to a whopping 530kW and 770Nm, making this the most powerful V8 engine in Prancing Horse history.

Ferrari hasn’t yet offered detail as to where such a hefty boost comes from, saying only that it’s an “extreme evolution” of the twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8 in the regular GTB.

Make no mistake, these figures are hardly coincidence as the Pista not only outdoes Porsche’s wickedest 911 (515kW/750Nm) but also just pips McLaren’s 527kW/770Nm 720S in the sheer grunt stakes.

We can’t help but notice, however, that Ferrari’s claimed 0-100km/h time of 2.85 seconds is five hundredths slower than the Porsche. Interestingly, it’s also five hundredths quicker than the McLaren. Given quoted top speeds of 340km/h for the GT2 RS and Pista, and 341 for the 720S, we’ll call it a three-way performance tie.

The 488 Pista (Italian for track) is a considerably leaner machine than its GTB counterpart with a 90kg savings showing in its 1280kg kerb weight. Again, there’s little information at this point as to where the weight savings comes from, but we’ll bet it’s in more extensive use of carbonfibre and the deletion of comfort modcons.

Ferrari says development has come straight from its experience in the World Endurance Championship, where it has five manufacturer’s titles in six years in the ultra competitive GTE class. So it’s safe to assume that luxury items like navigation, parking cameras and suspension lift systems have been left out.

An F1-inspired S-Duct which sees air enter under the front spoiler and exit through the bonnet, a diffuser derived straight from the GTE racing programme, and a higher rear spoiler all contribute to a 20 percent increase in downforce over the 488 GTB. Of course Ferrari’s latest electronic go-fast goodies are also included with specially adapted Side-Slip Angle Control systems (SSC), limited slip differentials (E-Diff3) and adjustable magnetorheological dampers (SCM).

The Pista also gets a new Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE) which uses a computer control unit to continuously modulate brake pressures.

Ferrari South Africa confirms the 488 Pista will be available locally some time in the first quarter of 2019. It’s too early for pricing, but expect a premium on the 488 GTB’s R5.12-million base price.
