This McLaren Senna Is Coming To South Africa

The McLaren Senna has already paid our beautiful country a visit thanks to some hot weather testing in Upington and even on the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit but that is of course a prototype unit.

Some of you will know that 6 customer units (out of 500 worldwide) of the McLaren Senna will be making their way to South Africa over the next few months and thanks to a kind owner to be, this is how one of them will be spec’d.

As you can see it will pay the MSO (McLaren Special Operations) department a proper visit with the main colour being a 1 of 1 purple hue and contrasted with just the right amount of Solar Yellow accents including the brake calipers, seat belts and some inside trimming. The owner has also decided to go with the clear doors.

The car is due to arrive in September this year (or a little earlier) and I am sure the car community of South Africa cannot wait to lay their eyes on this very bold creation. These renders were provided to me by the owner and were created by Alex Agera.

At this stage, local pricing is not known but with a base UK price of £600,000 (excluding tax and without visiting MSO), you can bet this will be a hefty tag when she lands in SA.

As a reminder, the McLaren Senna packs a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 789 hp and 800 Nm of torque capable of a 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) sprint in 2.8 seconds and a 0 to 200 km/h (124mph) in 6.8 seconds (whole second faster than the 720S).

McLaren's 15 000th supercar rolls off the line

McLaren celebrated the manufacture of its 15 000th car at the McLaren Production Centre (MPC) in Woking, Surrey, just seven years after production first began.

The 15 000th car, a 570S Spider in Curacao Blue from the company’s Sports Series family, represents a further significant milestone for the British sportscar and supercar brand, and comes less than 18 months after the 10 000th car was completed in December 2016.

Limited numbers

The introduction of a second production shift in 2016 to meet rising global demand for McLaren vehicles has seen production double from around 10 cars a day to 20, with over 90% of vehicles built in Woking exported to more than 30 markets around the world.

McLaren achieved record sales in 2017, selling a total of 3 340 cars. Demand has been stimulated by the launch of two new products, the 570S Spider within the Sports Series and the 720S within the Super Series.

Around two-thirds of sales in 2017 came from the Sports Series and one-third from the Super Series. A new Ultimate Series model, the McLaren Senna, has recently entered production and the first of just 500 customer cars will shortly be completed.

A significant milestone

Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer for McLaren Automotive said: "Reaching 15 000 cars built is a significant milestone for McLaren Automotive and comes under 18 months after we hit 10 000 vehicles, showing how demand and production have increased.

"The Sports Series has been pivotal to driving this growth, with the 570S Spider now the most popular of the range. The fact we are now able to produce 20 cars a day is of course a great testament to the hard work and dedication of every one of our workforce, who should feel justifably proud and part of this great team effort."

The McLaren Production Centre was designed by Foster + Partners and took 14 months to build from breaking ground to 18 July, 2011 when the first car, a McLaren 12C, was approved for shipping.

WATCH The McLaren Senna High-Speed Testing In South Africa

We knew the McLaren Senna prototypes made their way to South Africa after a reader snapped one testing in Upington and then it was spotted doing laps at Kyalami but now we have an official video from the manufacturer themselves from the hot-environment high-speed testing in the Northern Cape.

Official word on the street is we have six units of the McLaren Senna coming to South Africa with a demo unit arriving very soon.

We are also getting a track-only McLaren Senna GTR at some stage.

Here’s how many McLaren Senna units are heading to SA

Ahead of the highly anticipated launch of the new McLaren Senna (look out for our full driving impression on June 27), CARmag.co.za can confirm that eight units are destined for garages in South Africa.

While six units out of a total production run of 500 were initially allocated for our market (unlike the P1, the Senna is being offered in both left- and right-hand drive), such was the demand for McLaren’s “ultimate road-legal track car” that a further two deposits were accepted. The first example is expected to be delivered to its South African owner before the end of 2018.

While South African pricing has yet to be confirmed, we know that the car is offered to buyers in the United Kingdom at £750 000. This, of course, is for a base car and McLaren has confirmed that most owners have since opted for some form of MSO (McLaren Special Operations) customisation work to be done. This includes the majority of owners choosing the optional glass panels in the doors.

The final Senna to roll off the production line was auctioned for £2-million, with the proceeds donated to the Senna Foundation as a way of thanking the family for allowing McLaren to use the iconic name.

As a reminder, the Senna’s mid-mounted 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 (codenamed M840TR) delivers 588 kW and 800 N.m to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. That’s enough, says the Woking-based brand, for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 2,8 seconds. The British automaker furthermore claims that the Senna will reach 200 km/h in a mere 6,8 seconds, before topping out at 340 km/h.

DRIVEN: McLaren Senna

LISBON, Portugal – Stepping out of the low-slung McLaren Senna‘s cockpit and back onto the pit lane, every ounce of my being wants to wave to an imaginary crowd of ecstatic race fans packed into the grandstand on the opposite side of Estoril race track’s main straight. The beads of sweat streaming down my forehead only add to the heightened sense of drama and despite there being no official timing equipment to confirm it, I feel it’s very likely I’ve just shattered the standing lap record around one of Europe’s most challenging old-school circuits. I feel pumped yet completely prepared for the press conference to follow.

So, did you actually set a new lap record?

Very likely not, but that’s not the point. With my final three flying laps around Estoril accounting for some of the most exhilarating moments I’ve ever experienced behind the wheel of a car, it’s exactly this reaction McLaren was targeting when it signed off the concept for its newest machine, amply named after one of its greatest ambassadors, Formula One legend Ayrton Senna.

But, you at least went fairly quickly?

Put it this way: before McLaren sent us out in what it describes as its “ultimate road-legal racing car”, the automaker gave us the keys to one of the fastest accelerating vehicles CAR magazine has ever tested, a 720S, as a means of “building up to” the kind of pace that the Senna is capable of. We’re subsequently told that, in the right hands, the Senna is some six seconds faster around the 4,18-kilometre-long Estoril track than the 720S.

It’s not the prettiest supercar around, though…

While I’d hoped to report that the shape of the newest McLaren appeared that much more resolved when viewed in the metal compared with in pictures, there’s simply no escaping the fact that in penning the Senna to meet its supremely focussed brief some of the fluidity of design that we’ve grown accustomed to from this still relatively new carmaker has been sacrificed for the cause. That said, a closer inspection of some of the elements moulded around the now-familiar teardrop-shaped passenger cell reveals a level of intricacy and sophistication that serves as a welcome reminder of McLaren’s broadly admired commitment towards attention to go-faster detail. Picture the wind tunnel-generated images of air passing through, under and around the Senna’s exaggerated overhangs and pylon-mounted wing and know that this is a car that looks best on the move.

So, what makes it so special?

The second member of McLaren’s Ultimate Series, the Senna represents a decidedly less complex, more track-focussed project than with the P1 from which it inherits its class captain’s badge. Indeed, while the intricacies of the P1’s hybridised drivetrain setup seem destined to play a significant role in McLaren’s medium- to long-term plans, the relative weight penalty associated with this setup was deemed unacceptable for such a track-focussed car. As such, the 1 198 kg (dry) Senna is around 200 kg lighter than the P1 hypercar.

Bolted behind the company’s latest generation (MonoCage III) carbon-fibre tub and fed predominantly via a roof-mounted snorkel is the most powerful iteration of the brand’s M840TR twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 engine to date. Featuring lightweight camshafts, pistons and connecting rods, as well as a racing-inspired flat-plane crankshaft, it’s a powertrain that delivers 588 kW and 800 N.m of torque to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. On paper, these figures translate to a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 2,8-seconds, reaching 200 km/h a mere four seconds later.

And to drive?

Designed to be driven to and from the track as well as on it, McLaren’s RaceActive Chassis Control II offers a full menu of driving modes aimed at offering as much on-road comfort as a car with lap times firmly on its mind can muster. As a gesture of intent, Race mode lowers the car’s nose by 39 mm and the rear haunches by 30 mm, simultaneously adjusting all associated systems to their sharpest settings.

The hydraulically interconnected suspension at its firmest setting and the bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres up to temperature, I find myself completely immersed within the driving experience, every subtle transfer of weight and clatter of a rumble strip communicated via a steering wheel, pedals and seat that feel hardwired into, rather then simply fastened onto, the Senna package. Even in its most focussed setting, each lightning-fast gearshift is despatched with the fluidity of a schoolteacher seamlessly ticking the correct answers on her brightest student’s exam paper.

A short shift into third gear and a wide-open throttle on the exit of Estoril’s tight fourth turn sees the Senna powering relentlessly towards the track’s famous fifth corner kink. In the earlier driver’s briefing, we’re told that the faster you take this bend, the more effective the car’s active aero works. My face grimaced and backside clenched I place my trust in the hands of my Clan and keep my right foot planted, steering decisively towards the clipping point. Here, at 210 km/h, I’m close to the point (250 km/h) at which the Senna reportedly generates 800 kg of downforce, 40 percent more than the P1 at the same speed.

No sooner has my expression turned from a wince to a picture of sheer elation, we’re closing in on the 90-degree turn six at close to 280 km/h. Eight laps into my stint, I’m still not brave enough to wait, as suggested, for the 100 m marker before calling upon the most effective braking system (supplemented by a wing that tilts through 25 degrees) I’ve ever experienced to shed enough pace to afford the front tyres a reasonable chance of turning in.

Rejoicing in both the level of communication and freedom afforded by the Senna’s playful ESC Dynamic setting, I have a few sideways “moments” in final section of the track before placing the car neatly on the inside of the famous Parabolica curve, delicately managing my throttle inputs so as to achieve an optimal exit towards the finish line – and a new lap record. Probably.

As fast or, indeed, as relatively slow as my eventual lap times where, I’ve never felt as intricately connected and tuned into every working part of a car as I was in the Senna. The fact that you can still drive it home after a track session simply adds to the appeal. Say what you like about the styling, like the man it’s named after, the McLaren Senna is poised for “legend” status.

Here's Why The McLaren Senna Has Different Exhausts In America

“Wait a second,” you scream at your computer. “You mean to tell me that U.S.-spec McLaren Sennas don’t get the same exhaust as the euro-spec ones?” This is true, but for once it’s not a bad thing. Our American Sennas are even rowdier than what’s pootling around Europe right now.

I personally did not notice that the exhausts on American-sent Sennas didn’t match the ones that debuted first for Europe. I was busy staring at all the aero wondering how that would fit into the future GT1-spec car that exists in my dreams right now.

Also I was wondering if anyone would take out that plastic panel in the door and drive around with their leg hanging out.

But McLaren brain genius Peloton25 did notice the difference, and set to clearing the air about it on the Notes app of the soul, Instagram. The basic explanation is that Europe has tight noise regulations that the U.S.A and other parts of the world do not, so McLaren designed its Euro Sennas to have baffles on its outer two exhausts and also a third exhaust with more restriction to keep noise down at low speed. Higher speed opens things back up to full noise.

It’s kind of like the exact opposite of how the Honda Civic Type R has three exhausts with a loud middle for more noise at low speed, then a quieter outer two exhausts for a softer highway cruise.

I reached out to McLaren, which confirmed that this is officially official. What McLaren wasn’t exactly sure of was what the exact decibel levels allowed for each exhaust is, but if I hear back from them I’ll update this post.

But there you have it. American (and other non-European) Sennas are louder and brasher than the ones in their home market. I guess I shouldn’t be all that surprised after all.
