2019 Range Rover Evoque (Gen 2)

Range Rover Evoque (2019) International Launch Review

Verdict

With head-turning looks and an interior that is befitting of the Range Rover name, the new Evoque has all the right ingredients to make it another hit. Even those who aren’t concerned about its off-road abilities might be interested in its new in-car tech options. Either way, this is now one of the more refined small SUVs on the market today.

Pricing & Warranty

The Evoque range starts at R734 300. Land Rover offers a 3-year/100 000 km warranty alongside a 5-year/100 000 km service plan. Land Rover plans to introduce the new Evoque into SA during the second week of May 2019.

New Range Rover Evoque undergoes Euro NCAP crash test

Euro NCAP has released the results of its crash test of the new, second-generation Range Rover Evoque, with the luxury crossover scoring a full five stars for safety.

The new Evoque is scheduled to launch in South Africa either late in April or early in May 2019.

The safety authority said the new Evoque had made particularly good progress “in the area of vulnerable road user protection”, thanks largely to the adoption of an active bonnet and autonomous emergency braking (including the ability to detect pedestrians and cyclists).

In the event, the Evoque scored 94 percent for adult occupant protection (the highest score in this area for any Jaguar Land Rover product to date), 87 percent for child occupant protection, 72 percent for vulnerable road users and 73 percent for its safety assistance features.

A right-hand-drive unit in “R Dynamic” specification and fitted with a 2,0-litre turbodiesel was crash-tested by Euro NCAP, although the five-star rating applies to all variants in the European range.

No electric Range Rover Evoque planned, PHEV instead

Firm believes plug-in hybrid powertrains are the way forward, and Evoque platform not ready for full-EV

An electric Range Rover Evoque won’t arrive to the line-up before 2025, as the brand focuses its efforts on hybrid technology in the mid-term.

Jaguar Land Rover UK boss Rawdon Glover said that while “there will be a market for a small to medium-sized electric SUV”, it will not arrive before the next generation of its entry-level Range Rover.

The second-generation Evoque launched earlier this year, seven years after the compact SUV was born, and thanks to a new platform, now accommodates mild hybrids as well as a plug-in hybrid.

However, Autocar understands the platform can not accommodate a fully electric drivetrain, and so new architecture would need to be implemented for a third-generation model to house such a set-up.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque P200 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

Petrol power had seemed on its way out of cars the size of the Evoque and larger, but the diesel backlash has seen that trend reverse. And when you drive one, it’s easy to see why the trend emerged in the first place. Diesel is just better suited to cars of this type.

So is true of the Evoque, too. The D180 diesel that scooped the class honours recently is such a brilliant all-rounder, opting for any other version in the range is willingly choosing something that is second best. The P200 is merely a good car instead of a great one. So buy that diesel: there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t.

DRIVEN: Range Rover Evoque D180 R-Dynamic HSE AWD auto

For a manufacturer with such an ingrained sense of adventure, it’s been mission accomplished in terms of the success of the boutique Range Rover Evoque. The fastest-selling model in Land Rover’s history, I clearly remember the buzz and sense of anticipation that surrounded the introduction of the first-generation model in 2011. Talk of Posh Spice’s involvement in the development process and neat proportions that were guaranteed to get you noticed on the High Street paved the way for a newfound sense of chic and occasion that, in return, introduced an inevitably younger, more status conscious audience to the brand. Indeed, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa claims that of the impressive number of models sold locally since its introduction (though three-door, five door and convertible applications), 76 percent of sales were to customers new to Land Raver family.

As popular as the first-generation Evoque has been, it stands to reason that those owners who haven’t already upgraded to the Velar as their need for greater levels of interior versatility (including children) may have grown, will be more than satisfied with the sleek new lines and updated interior that the new model offers. Whether the boldly priced new Evoque line-up has the same effect in terms of enticing new customers to the brand, especially with the likes of the forthcoming new Audi Q3, polished BMW X1 (and, at these prices, even the larger X3) and excellent Volvo XC40 in the mix. As suggested by its own research, the fact the Evoque offers superior off-roading ability compared with most of its rivals matters little when it comes to day-to-day flaunting.

Range Rover Evoque (2019) Launch Review

Summary

The new Evoque hasn’t changed much from the outside; Range Rover is steadfast in the belief that its premium compact SUV's original design was a winner. Whether it stands out and has as much visual clout as it did when the initial model was introduced, we’ll have to wait and see.

Under the skin, it has had a thorough makeover. The touch points inside are of a high standard and the quilted leather exudes luxury where its competitors are installing pretty plastics instead. Passenger space is better than before, but still not a strong point.

The Evoque has unmatched off-road credentials in its segment, but doesn’t offer them at the cost of on-road manners. It’s sporty to drive and responsive when you want to get a move on.

Indeed, it may all come down to cost. The starting price is over R700k and you don’t get an interior that does it justice at that price. No doubt you’ll be well into the R800k range before you’re happy with what you have and that’s a lot of money for a compact-sized SUV.

Baby Velar? New Range Rover Evoque line-up explained in detail

The original Range Rover Evoque rocked the premium compact SUV market almost a decade ago with its daring look inspired by the LRX Concept, and now it’s time for the remake, which has just docked in South Africa.

The second generation Evoque's design forges an evolutionary path, while also taking some ‘smooth’ inspiration from the Range Rover Velar, with its flush lines, hidden door handles and full-length tail light housing.

Built on a new mixed-material platform that’s 13 percent stiffer than before, the new SUV is a similar size to its predecessor, but a 21mm longer wheelbase brings more interior space, while luggage capacity grows by 10 percent to 591 litres.

On the technological front, the Evoque offers some interesting new gadgetry.

If you venture off-road you can make use of the ClearSight Ground View system, in which front-mounted cameras give you a view - via the central touchscreen - of what’s underneath the front of the vehicle, while the Clear Sight digital rear view mirror uses cameras to show you what’s behind even when there are objects in the boot obstructing your view, while also providing a wider and clearer view.

You’ll get Ground View when opting for the 360-degree Surround View system, which is an R8400 extra, while the fancy mirror costs between R300 and R3000 depending on model.

Range and features

The Base version is fitted with a 25.4cm single touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera, and other standard features include push-button start, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, ambient lighting, front and rear parking aids, Driver Condition Monitor and Lane Keep Assist. On the outside, LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard.

Upgrade to the S and you get ebony leather seats with 10-way adjustment upfront, as well as Navigation Pro with 3D maps.

But the real fun starts at SE, where you get the dual-screen Touch Pro Duo electronic interface, along with a digital instrument cluster, powered tailgate and 14-way electric adjustment for the front seats. On the outside you’ll tell it apart by 20-inch alloy wheels, Premium LED headlights with the 'Signature' daytime running lights, animated indicators and ‘Signature’ tail lights.

Things get even more lavish if you opt for the HSE, with two-tone perforated Windsor leather seats (now featuring 16-way seat adjustment), upgraded Meridian sound system, keyless entry, Blind Spot Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and much more. Oh, and the 20-inch alloy wheels have a contrasting ‘Diamond Turned’ finish.

The R-Dynamic design pack comes as standard on the HSE too, although you can optionally specify it with the S and SE grades. As per tradition, a First Edition is also offered, with its own unique mix of features.
