Pricing: Updated Range Rover Evoque and Velar now available to order

JLR South Africa has opened the order books for its 2024 Range Rover Evoque and Velar models, which have received subtle design enhancements as well as new cabin electronics.

Pricing for the updated Range Rover Evoque ranges between R1,258,100 and R1,702,000, while the larger Velar will find its way into your driveway for between R1,670,000 and R2,202,700 - see full range and pricing below the story.

There’s not much to tell the 2024 models apart on the outside, but JLR is offering new Pixel LED headlights with chiselled front and rear light signature graphics and new “super-red” rear illumination that offers increased visibility and reduced glare for other road users.

Subtle updates have also been made to the grilles and bumpers of both models.

The changes are more apparent inside the MY2024 Evoque and Velar, where you’ll find a new 11.4-inch (28.9cm) floating-effect curved glass touchscreen.

Verdict

The biggest hurdle standing in the way of Evoque’s success is its price. We suspect that because Jaguar Land Rover South Africa doesn’t receive rebates on import duties (because it doesn’t produce vehicles locally) it is utterly at the mercy of the Rand/Pound Sterling exchange rate, which has been unfavourable to Mzansi – to say the least. Then there’s the issue of additional tax that Government levies on imported electrified vehicles, including plug-in hybrids. All of this contributes to the Ranger Rover’s lofty price tag.

Should you buy one? If you are determined to own a plug-in hybrid vehicle, then we advise looking at one of the excellent Volvo XC60 T8 Twin Engine derivatives, which should be almost R500k cheaper than the P300e Dynamic HSE. Otherwise, if you still like the idea of not following the crowd and seek an executive SUV with “boutique appeal”, there’s very little to fault the turbodiesel-powered Evoque derivatives.

As much as we love rowing our own, we're not exactly sad we don't get this one.

Land Rover isn’t exactly known for building the most reliable cars, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still cool, comfortable and incredibly capable. If you’re looking to spend over $1,000 a month leasing a luxury SUV, you can do a whole lot worse than a Range Rover. Unfortunately, as an enthusiast, you’re not actually allowed to drive a Range Rover because they’re only offered with automatic transmissions. Don’t despair, though, we come bearing great news. Land Rover actually does still sell a car with a manual transmission.

There are, of course, going to be some downsides. For starters, you’ll have to leave the U.S. You don’t mind moving to the UK, do you? Sure, they’re pretty hostile toward immigrants these days, and the economy is failing, but on the plus side, their language is close enough to English that you shouldn’t have too many problems communicating with the locals. It’ll take some time to adjust, but surely, it’ll be worth it to get a three-pedal Land Rover, right?

Additionally, Land Rover’s lone manual transmission also isn’t available on something cool like the big daddy Range Rover or Defender. No, you can only get the stick shift on a front-wheel drive Range Rover Evoque. And with a base price of £40,800, it’s not exactly cheap. In fact, it appears to cost more than the median household income in the UK. Nor is it quick, with its 163-hp diesel engine requiring 9.5 seconds to hit 60 mph.

The base Range Rover Evoque P160 – featuring front-wheel drive and a 3-cylinder engine – has arrived in SA, slotting in R150 000 below the most affordable D200…

The Evoque line-up in South Africa has quietly welcomed the base Range Rover Evoque P160, which introduces front-wheel drive to the range and features a price-tag some R150 000 below that of the most affordable D200 derivative.

Thanks to the ever-observant vehicle-information specialists over at duoporta.com, we can tell you the freshly introduced Evoque P160 S is priced from R1 142 000, which means it costs R151 800 less than the diesel-powered D200 Dynamic SE (the latter currently available from R1 293 800).

Meanwhile, the likewise new-to-the-range Evoque P160 Dynamic SE kicks off at R1 233 800. From what we can tell (based on the derivatives currently listed on the brand’s website), the local Evoque portfolio now comprises 6 variants, with the D200 S, D200 Dynamic HSE and P300e Autobiography all seemingly falling away.

But back to the freshly introduced P160. Urge comes from a turbocharged 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine, which sends 118 kW and 260 Nm to the front – yes, front – axle via a 9-speed automatic transmission as standard. The listed 0-100 kph time is 10.3 seconds, while the top speed comes in at 199 kph.

Launching the Range Rover Evoque in 2011 put Land Rover ahead of the curve, because this premium compact SUV now finds itself competing with countless rivals.

As I've mentioned before, the Evoque needs a new generation to keep pace, but it's faring well given its age (seven years for the Mk2).There are several obvious competitors from BMW, Audi et al, but arguably the most notable entrants over the past couple of years have come from China.

One such car is Chery's Jaecoo 7, which colleague Alastair Clements is currently running. It's particularly relevant here, because plenty say its looks are somewhat Evoque-inspired.

The 7 is already a common sight on UK roads, which is a significant development for an early model from a new brand. Alastair and I brought the two cars together to ponder how they sit alongside each other.

London-inspired Range Rover Evoque and Velar: SA price and specs

Harking back to its heritage, Land Rover has announced a quartet of London-inspired Range Rover models are headed to South Africa, with two of these – the Evoque Hoxton Edition and Velar Belgravia Edition – already available to order in our market.

Land Rover South Africa has confirmed a quartet of London-inspired special-edition Range Rover models for our market. Named for influential areas in the British capital, these include the Evoque Hoxton Edition, Velar Belgravia Edition, Range Rover Sport Battersea Edition, and Range Rover Westminster Edition. While the Coventry carmaker’s local arm has yet to announce more details, including pricing, for the latter two derivatives, it has announced the former, Evoque- and Velar-based models are already available to order in our market.

So, what sets the special editions apart from their “standard” stablemates? The Evoque Hoxton Edition sports “understated” badging, ‘Hoxton Edition’ script for the puddle lamps, Satin Gold 20-inch alloy wheels, and the automaker’s Platinum Atlas exterior styling pack. Stepping inside, the illuminated tread plates feature ‘Hoxton Edition’ script, brushed black aluminium trim, and contrast stitching for the leather pews.

The Evoque Hoxton Edition is available with three powertrain options: (P160) 1.5-litre turbo-triple petrol producing 118 kW/260 N.m; (D200) 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel, which churns out 146 kW and 430 N.m; and P300e plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which pairs an electric motor with a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol engine. The P300e is endowed with 227 kW and 540 N.m.

The Evoque Hoxton Edition is priced from R1 239 200 for the P160, with the D200 and P300e priced from R1 337 600 and R1 749 400, respectively.

The Velar Belgravia Edition is distinguished from its stablemates via the fitment of 20-inch alloy wheels, finished in Dark Agate and featuring Satin Black tinted lacquer and illuminated puddle lamps displaying ‘Belgravia Edition’. The interior gains contrast stitching and bespoke treat plates. To further distinguish this model, customers have the option of specifying a Satin Pack, which adds 22-inch alloys and black trim elements for the exterior.

The Belgravia Edition-spec Velar is available in D300, P400e and D200 flavours – the latter engine also found in the Evoque. The D300’s 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel produces 221 kW and 650 N.m. The P400e’s PHEV powertrain comprises a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol engine paired with an electric motor. The P400e unit produces a combined system output of 297 kW and 650 N.m.
