REVIEW: New Renault Clio is a breath of fresh air in a segment dominated by Polo

VERDICT

In a market that’s doing everything it can to attract buyers the Renault Clio provides a breath of fresh air in the segment and with spruced up looks, engaging drive, decent safety features and technology it deserves to be vying for a competitive position on the sales charts.

It comes with a five-year/150 000 mechanical warranty, a two-year/30 000km service plan and a six-year anti-corrosion warranty.

Had a test drive in one of these last weekend. It’s a great car. However, I wouldn’t buy it because of the gearbox.

The 5 speed manual gearbox is too notchy. It didn’t feel right. Lastly, it needs a 6th gear. Top gear at a steady 100 km/h shows north of 3500 rpm on the clock.

Summary

There’s a lot to like about the flagship Renault Clio, considering its price tag. When you consider its rivals in the hatchback and compact SUV segments, the 1.0 Turbo Intens is both feature-rich and competitively priced. The new-gen car is also more upmarket than the model it replaces – the cabin’s switchgear is more substantial and it feels better made, thanks to the application of nicer grades of trim materials.

For those who don’t seek the added ground clearance of a compact SUV, the Clio 5 is quite a practical car with a big load bay and more than enough occupant space. There’s no shortage of connectivity options and, on road, it feels comparatively composed compared with its small-crossover competitors.

Most buyers may desire an automatic transmission in a new car at this price point, so until Renault South Africa is able to furnish us with one (again, it is coming), the Clio’s a bit hamstrung in that regard.

Heavy update should boost the appeal of France’s Ford Fiesta as ICE rivals exit the market

The future of the Renault Clio is set to be safeguarded by a dramatic update in the coming months, making it one of a select few ICE superminis to remain on sale in the face of various headwinds.

The French hatchback will receive a radical styling overhaul with a new, sharper front end featuring slimmer LED headlights placed above large, arrow-shaped daytime running lights – hidden by camouflage in these latest spy images.

The test car’s rear end shows off redesigned brake lights and a more angular bumper. The images also reveal a long exhaust pipe protruding from the body, hinting at airflow testing for a tweaked petrol powerplant.

It's expected that any upgrades are targeted at making the Clio’s engine – either the regular 89bhp TCe 90 or the 143bhp E-Tech hybrid – compliant with the incoming Euro 7 emissions regulations. Neither unit is likely to improve in performance, a slight decrease in power and torque output being a likelier result of the new rules.

The interior is expected to benefit from an uplift in material quality in line with Renault’s recently pledged push for profit, integrating more soft-touch materials around the dashboard and doors.

The 2024 Renault Clio Facelift has been revealed, bringing a radical new face to the compact hatchback segment. Here’s a look at what’s changed as well as a confirmed time of arrival in SA.

With over 16 million units finding homes around the world, the Clio has proven quite a winner for the French brand. Now the 2024 Renault Clio has been revealed, showing off a brand-new face, the debut of the new Renault logo for the Clio as well as a sporty Alpine trim.

The face has changed the most, with minimal changes under the skin. The new front looks far more aggressive and features the brand’s bold new logo. There are new slim LED headlights which are now standard across the lineup and the diamond daytime running lights look like the Renault logo has been split in half. A clever touch if you ask us.

Renault Clio facelift revealed with sharp new front, updated cabin

It’s facelift time for the fifth-generation Renault Clio, which receives a bold new front end and upgraded cabin aimed at keeping it at the sharp end of its dying segment.

But why is it getting a facelift so soon? Well, the current model was revealed abroad back in 2019, but due to various pandemic-related delays it took until 2022 to reach South African shores. To that end, the facelifted model is anticipated to reach us by late 2024, Renault SA tells us.

Though most of the internals remain as before, the Renault Clio gets a completely redesigned front end that includes a larger grille housing the brand’s new logo as well as slimmer headlights incorporating a new daytime running light signature that runs to the bottom of the bumper.

There are more flavours to choose from too. Renault is introducing a new Esprit Alpine trim grade and this variant, along with the Techno, receive a chiselled aerodynamic blade beneath the grille.

The Alpine model gets Matte Shale Grey treatment for this element as well as the lower edge of the redesigned rear bumper, which is fitted in matte or glossy black in the other variants. The taillights have been freshened up too, with crystal-clear covers and bright outer edges that mirror the lighting pattern at the front.
