Single teaser is out ahead of the reveal later in the month.

New Subaru Forester to be unveiled in New York

The fifth-generation Forester SUV, based upon the Subaru Global Platform, will be unveiled at the end of this month

Subaru’s new Forester SUV will be unveiled at the end of March at the New York motor show. The long-awaited hybrid variant of the Forester will appear at the Beijing motor show on 25 April.

Like the new Impreza and XV crossover, the Forester, previewed in a single image (above), will be based on the new Subaru Global Platform, which has already excelled in official crash tests both in the US and the UK.

The styling of the new model was previewed in 2015 by the Viziv Future Concept (pictured below), although the production car will be a similar size to today’s Forester. Production models are expected before the end of this year.

Subaru’s new hybrid system is expected to either be an electric motor incorporated into the brand’s signature longitudinal transmission (a set-up used in the short-lived XV Hybrid), or a more radical system replacing the rear differential with an electric motor. Hybrid technology from Toyota - which owns 16% of Subaru - has been utilised for the new Forester.

A new-generation 2.5-litre flat-four developing around 180bhp is expected to be offered in US markets, but there’s no news on what the main UK engine will be, although diesel engine options will be dropped. Today’s 2.0-litre flat-four is regarded as anaemic, and the 1.6-litre petrol turbo fitted to the Levorg estate might be too thirsty in the heavier and less aerodynamic Forester.

The option of a manual gearbox could be dropped altogether if Subaru’s semi-autonomous driving system, EyeSight, which needs to be combined with an automatic transmission, is fitted as standard to UK-spec Foresters.

A successful launch for the new Forester in the UK is essential for the brand after a significant drop in sales in 2017. The Forester sells around 300,000 units globally, accounting for 25% of Subaru's overall production.

New Subaru Forester Teased

Subaru has released a teaser image of its new Forester family SUV which is due to be unveiled at the upcoming New York Motor Show on 28 March 2018.
The ageing Subaru Forester is due for replacement and a new model will be shown at the New York Motor Show at the end of this month. The above image is a teaser image released by Subaru showing the C-shaped taillight design which extends onto the tailgate of the new family SUV.

The new Subaru Forester may share styling cues with this VIZIV Future Concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2015.

Reports suggest that the new Forester will share styling inspiration from the 2015 VIZIV Future Concept and will be built on the brand’s new Subaru Global Platform (SGP). Exact details have yet to be revealed but you can expect a 4-cylinder Boxer engine under the bonnet, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), symmetrical all-wheel drive, as well as Subaru’s latest EyeSight driver assist and safety technology making its way into the new Forester.

The Forester is also expected to grow in size which should have a positive effect in terms of interior space.

Further details will be revealed at the New York Motor Show and we will certainly keep you updated as more information becomes available, so stay tuned.

Subaru Forester

Subaru of America Inc., debuted the all-new 2019 Forester at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The fifth generation of the best-selling SUV introduces the roomiest, most capable and most versatile Forester ever made and also features groundbreaking new safety technology.

The 2019 Subaru Forester is built on the Subaru Global Platform to deliver significantly higher levels of driving pleasure, agility, crash protection, ride comfort and quietness. Arriving at Subaru retailers later this year, the all-new Forester will be available in standard, Premium, Limited, Touring and new Sport trim levels. All are powered by an enhanced direct-injection, 182 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder BOXER engine featuring Auto Stop/Start and paired with a standard Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). Also standard on all trim levels is Subaru's legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

For 2019, all Foresters come standard with the award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. The top-of-line Touring debuts the segment-exclusive DriverFocus safety technology which offers yet another layer of safety and convenience for the driver. The system can alert the driver of fatigue or distraction while on the road as well as automatically adjust many driver settings at start-up.

Segment First DriverFocus Safety Technology

With DriverFocus, Subaru is taking on one of the biggest issues in the automotive industry; distracted driving. Each day in the United States, more than 1,000 people are injured in crashes reported to have involved a distracted driver. As an industry leader in safety, Subaru has developed DriverFocus, a state-of-the-art system to help address distracted driving for both new and experienced drivers.

DriverFocus is a driver monitoring system that uses facial recognition software to identify signs of driver fatigue or driver distraction. DriverFocus works with Subaru's award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology to reduce the chance of an accident. And for added convenience, DriverFocus can also recognize up to five drivers and remember their presets for seat position, climate, multifunction display and more.

The all-new Subaru Forester is the first in its segment, and among the first vehicles in the industry to incorporate technology that can address the important societal issue of distracted driving. The feature will be standard on Touring models.

Added Power and Efficiency

All Foresters are powered by a new version of the 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER four-cylinder engine, now with direct fuel injection and higher compression, along with active valve control system (AVCS) on the exhaust side. The new engine produces 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, versus 170 hp and 174 lb-ft in the previous Subaru Forester, for a boost in everyday performance and responsiveness.

The 2019 Forester comes standard with Lineartronic CVT. The new powertrain not only yields quicker acceleration than the previous Forester, but also up to 33 mpg highway fuel economy (manufacturer's estimate, pending EPA certification). On Sport and Touring variants, the CVT features a manual mode that simulates a seven-speed manual transmission, using steering wheel paddle shift control switches.

Adding more flexibility for driving conditions, is a standard driver-selectable SI-DRIVE. SI-DRIVE is a powertrain performance management system that allows the driver to tailor the vehicle's throttle characteristics by choosing between "Intelligent" and "Sport" modes (Sport Sharp on Forester Sport). "Intelligent" mode helps smooth out accelerator inputs for fuel saving, while "Sport" mode tunes the throttle to emphasize performance.

Signature Subaru Design

The 2019 Subaru Forester debuts a more rugged style that showcases Subaru's new design language while retaining a strong family resemblance to the rest of the brand's portfolio. The exterior has shoulder lines that follow around the pillars to emphasize height and strength. Prominent wheel arches emphasize the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system's functionality. Front, side and rear underguards are standard on all models, with color finish according to trim line. New LED headlights are standard on all models and complement the brand's signature hexagonal grille. High-gloss black or silver trim highlights the Forester's premium appearance, accentuated by new colors such as Jasper Green Metallic, Horizon Blue Pearl and Crimson Red Pearl.

Forester's new design brings added function. The wheelbase is increased to 105.1 in. from 103.9 in., with the gain benefitting rear seat legroom, which is now 39.4-in., a 1.4-in. increase. Gains in headroom, hip and shoulder room further bolster passenger comfort and a feeling of spaciousness in the cabin. Wider rear door openings and a steep C-pillar angle make ingress/egress and installing a child seat easier. All Subaru Forester models feature lower body side cladding, which helps protect against mud, rocks and other road debris.

The new Forester design maintains outstanding outward visibility, a hallmark of Subaru models. Strategically designed pillars and generous glass area ensure an excellent all-around view from inside, and all models feature a standard rear vision camera.

The 2019 Forester design increases cargo space to 76.1 cu. ft. with the 60:40 split rear seatbacks lowered, a gain of 1.4 cu. ft. The load floor sits flatter, and the cargo area's squared-off shape has been further optimized for ease of carrying large objects. Notably, the rear gate opening maximum width is now 51.2-in. wide, a 5.3-in. increase over the previous model and up to 8-in. wider than on some competitive SUVs. For example, with the 2019 Subaru Forester, it will be possible to load a full-size golf bag sideways without tilting it. A power rear gate is standard on Limited and Touring trim levels and available as an option for Premium and Sport.

Roof rails, standard on all but the base model, allow for a number of Subaru Genuine Accessories for carrying items such as bicycles and kayaks. New tie-down hooks integrated into the rails, on Sport and Touring trims, allow ropes to be tied down more easily and securely.

New Subaru Forester unveiled in New York

The fifth-generation Forester SUV, based upon the Subaru Global Platform, will be unveiled at the end of this month

Subaru’s new Forester SUV has been revealed at the New York motor show, showing what's to come when the first customer cars arrive on roads late this year.

Like the new Impreza and XV crossover, the Forester is based on Subaru's tough new Global Platform, but it retains the unique appearance of its predecessor with only slight design changes. This comes as little surprise; the outgoing car has consistently been a strong-seller in certain parts of the US, so Subaru won't want to change the recipe too much.

The Forester will at first come with a new-generation 2.5-litre flat four developing around 182bhp and 176lb ft of torque, with start/stop technology included to offer improvements to economy. Drive is sent to all corners via symmetrical all-wheel drive and a Lineartronic CVT gearbox is fitted as standard.

There's no word as to what the main UK engine will be, although we know diesel options will be dropped. Today’s 2.0-litre flat-four is regarded as anaemic, and the 1.6-litre petrol turbo fitted to the Levorg estate might be too thirsty in the heavier and less aerodynamic Forester.

The UK looks set to follow suit of the US and be offered only a CVT gearbox for the Forester. This seems likely given that Subaru’s semi-autonomous driving system, EyeSight, which needs to be combined with an automatic transmission, is expected as standard on UK Foresters.

Inside, there's a 6.5in or 8.0ijn touchscreen with Subaru's latest Starlink infotainment system.

Subaru's corporate boss Takeshi Tachimori said: "The key with this car is that it is designed for its market, which is families. We know the opposition - the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and so on - and we stand out for not chasing car enthusiasts, but for giving these families what they want, from safety to space and practicality to comfort and more, all built to an affordable price.

"Our product is entirely rational, and that is the right way. Our brand, though, is more emotional - we have underdog appeal, being smaller than most car making giants, and earning respect with our approach. That separation between product and brand is proving very popular."

Next month, Subaru will reveal its long-awaited hybrid variant of the Forester at the Beijing motor show.

A successful launch for the new Forester in the UK is essential for the brand after a significant drop in sales in 2017. The Forester sells around 300,000 units globally, accounting for 25% of Subaru's overall production. In the UK the current model is priced from £26,495.

It's like they didn't even try to give it a new design, they mostly enlargened the headlights and rear lights

All-new (fifth-generation) Subaru Forester revealed

Subaru has revealed its new Forester at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, describing the fifth generation of the SUV as “the roomiest, most capable and most versatile” Forester ever.

Running on the Subaru Global Platform already underpinning the likes of the Impreza and XV, the new Forester boasts a longer wheelbase (at 2 670 mm) than before, ostensibly benefitting rear seat legroom. The new SUV measures 4 625 mm long, 1 815 mm wide and 1 730 mm tall, with a ground clearance of 220 mm.

The US-spec model unveiled in New York is powered by a 2,5-litre four-cylinder boxer engine, paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT and symmetrical all-wheel drive. The new engine makes 136 kW and 239 N.m (up from the current engine’s 126 kW and 235 N.m), while the CVT features a manual mode (with paddles) that simulates a seven-speed transmission. From what we can tell, no manual gearbox will be available.

The Forester also features the Japanese automaker’s familiar EyeSight driver assistance technology, complete with a new “Driver Focus” function (a monitoring system that uses facial recognition software to identify signs of driver fatigue or driver distraction) on some models.

Inside, you’ll find new front seats, a new electronic parking brake (replacing the traditional parking brake handle) and standard automatic climate control. There’s also the latest touchscreen multimedia system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. In the US, a 6,5-inch screen will ship standard, while higher trim levels will feature an 8,0-inch multimedia system.

Subaru Southern Africa says the new Forester will go on sale locally in the first quarter of 2019, with specifications and power units “still to be confirmed”, but likely to “differ from the US-spec model” revealed in New York.

These are going to land in Sa for some crazy price and then the same old cr#p resale value the poor suckers who buy them have to deal with a few years later.

A Subaru is one of the few car brands that gives a Frenchie a good run for their money in how quickly they devalue, that being said if I could stomach the spares and repairs bills Subaru are cursed with I'd buy one in a heartbeat

By looking online they seem to hold their resale value pretty well.

That has never been my experience with them, granted they may hold reasonably steady for a few years after purchase but then they start to nose dive like a mofo.
