Obviously not destined for SA but good to share nevertheless. Bland-ish on the outside but interior looks really high quality for a Toy. Finally Toyota wakes up & offers CarPlay.

Toyota Avalon

Underpinned by a Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, and powered by a fuel-efficient 3.5-liter V6 or Toyota Hybrid System (THS II) powertrain, the 2019 Toyota Avalon embodies consumers' overarching desire for high-caliber, design-centric, technologically-savvy modes of attainable, premium transportation.

To its menu, Avalon mixes a bevy of Toyota-firsts such as standard Apple CarPlay and Dynamic Auxiliary Turn Signals, available authentic Yamaha wood and aluminum cabin accents, and Engine Sound Enhancement. In addition, drivers will appreciate the standard passive and active safety benefits through Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), as well as athletic handling thanks to its available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), also a Toyota first, that, quite positively, has Avalon out-performing its peers.

Flagship Makeover

For its fifth generation, Toyota Avalon received an all-encompassing makeover by Toyota's U.S.-based design, engineering, and manufacturing entities at Calty Design Research Inc. (Calty) in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Toyota Motor North America Research and Development (TMNA R&D) in Saline, Michigan; and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) in Georgetown, Kentucky, respectively. Spearheaded by Chief Engineer, Randy Stephens, and Calty President, Kevin Hunter, the brain trust masterminded an Avalon that represents multilateral progressiveness - for itself, its diverse group of drivers, and, for Toyota.

The teams minded two keywords throughout their development paradigm: Authenticity and Exhilaration. Both were applied in every area of Avalon's sophisticated essence, and throughout the four available grades: the athletic XSE (all-new) and Touring, as well as the more opulent XLE and Limited. Hybrid grades include XLE, Limited, and XSE.

Hello, Technical Beauty

A wealth of Calty signature elements cocoons Toyota Avalon's long, low-slung TNGA musculature. Its expressive looks diligently reflect the mixture of all-encompassing, performance-focused personality, the invigorating driver experience, and a premium, spacious image.

A philosophy of Technical Beauty permeates Avalon's body lines and cabin landscapes. Technical, which aligns with Authenticity, represents purpose and performance - tangible elements of the sedan's style. Beauty, which aligns with Exhilaration, represents onlookers' emotional reaction to Avalon's taut lines and sleek silhouette.

Because of its adaptable TNGA core, the Calty team penned Avalon's exterior to be longer, lower, and wider than before. Unique, never-before-accomplished stamping methods also aided in the deep draw panels that express distinguishable sculpted forms. Complex surfaces could now be shaped, like at Toyota Avalon's door handles that coincide with its profile's bold character line. A distinct, carved lower rocker panel behind the front wheels visually exemplifies the benefits of TNGA.

Don't like the direction they've taken with the front grille & surrounds design. Don't like it on the Lexus, don't like it here. The front & back look very clunky.

Toyota wants to move away from the "bland" rep.
Yes but in doing so they took on a design language that is all over the place, headlamps and rear lights are now bulging like an insects eye, their grills look like it's melting

Toyota will finally start supporting CarPlay with 2019 Avalon

The Toyota 2019 Avalon was just introduced at the North American International Auto Show up in Detroit, Michigan. It will be the first vehicle in Toyota’s lineup to support Apple’s CarPlay.

The Avalon will have a 9-inch capacitive touchscreen, and CarPlay will be standard among all trim levels.

The Entune 3.0 multimedia system will include support for CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, and we will see it arrive in many other vehicles starting in 2019.

Since Entune 3.0 is already in the 2018 Camry and 2018 Sienna, we should see CarPlay coming to the 2019 versions as well as the Avalon.

Unfortunately for those in international markets, CarPlay will be limited to the US, at least at launch.

Toyota has long been a holdout in supporting CarPlay, instead highlighting the merits of their own infotainment system.

I personally drove a RAV4 for a few years, and was underwhelmed with the Entune system. It was a primary reason for me jumping to the Ford Escape, which did support CarPlay.

If you’d like to check out the Toyota Avalon, they will go on sale starting in late spring of 2018.

You can also check out Apple’s (occasionally) updated list of vehicles that support CarPlay.

I saw a Lexus LC 500 the other day and almost jizzed in my pants. Fugly on paper but definitely a head turner.
Also has a prominent grille.

Toyota Avalon TRD

Toyota is once again bringing its racing pedigree to the road as it unveils the Camry TRD and Avalon TRD, two sedans with an appetite for curves and a distinct exhaust note bristling with attitude. With aero-enhanced styling by Calty, Toyota's U.S. design studio, and chassis performance fortified by Toyota Racing Development (TRD), these revved-up Camry and Avalon models are the track-tuned sedans that enthusiasts have been asking for.

Many Toyota enthusiasts already know the equity behind the TRD badge seen on the brand's hardcore, off-road-ready pickups and SUVs. Conquering the Baja, however, is just one of many feats won by TRD vehicles across the motorsports spectrum. Now, TRD brings its track tuning to sedans that blend greater agility, precision and body control with attention-grabbing design and everyday drivability.

When Toyota introduced the new-generation 2018 Camry, sales of the sporty SE and XSE versions spiked. A year later, Toyota introduced the all-new 2019 Avalon, which came in an available XSE grade for the first time ever. These sedans are stylish and fun to drive. And Toyota is pushing the limit even further with Camry TRD and Avalon TRD, both with greater track-inspired handling performance and styling. These models include all standard content from the Camry SE grade and Avalon XSE grade, combined with exclusive TRD chassis enhancements and tuning.

Toyota Camry TRD and Avalon TRD will both be model year 2020 and available in fall 2019.

Dead: America's Stupidest Best Car, The Toyota Avalon

No car feels more like getting away with something dumb like a V6 Avalon.

It’s not fair to say that in today’s world of SUVs and crossovers, the Toyota Avalon full-size sedan stopped making sense. The Avalon stopped making sense a long time ago.

No car felt more like you were getting away with something than a V6 Avalon, thanks to two key traits:

  • Its V6 engine made about two times as much power as the front wheels could handle.
  • Nobody ever so much as looked your way.
As I wrote in 2015, after tearing ass around New York City in one:

There’s a sick joy when you drive like an ******* in such an old person’s car. But just as much as it’s a joke to thrash such a boring car, the Avalon is actually kind of great when pressed. Toyota’s big V6 makes more power than you need and happily overwhelm the tires at your request. They’re quick when you hustle them, too. I still remember heaving my old ‘93 Lexus around a rallycross course faster than a brand-new Ford Fiesta ST. (I tore open the exhaust doing it, but that’s beside the point.)

When it’s all over and you stop driving like you’re trying to get yourself arrested, the best part is that the car returns to its calm, usual self. It becomes just another car on the road, only a little bit roomier, a little bit nicer, and absolutely invisible.

This combo of pointlessly powerful, wonderfully comfortable, and completely invisible is going away, perhaps because Toyota forgot to keep making it, as Automotive News reports:

The Avalon, the mass market brand’s flagship sedan, was due to be refreshed in the second half of next year. However, the automaker’s purchasing department informed suppliers that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky will end output of the Avalon.
