Volkswagen Lavida is the China-only Jetta we want
The Jetta’s Chinese twin has received many styling upgrades and cabin refinements in preparation of its Beijing Auto Show debut.
A joint venture between SAIC and VW, the Lavida is a mid-sized sedan, built on the proven MQB platform. Sitting atop VW’s overengineered chassis is bodywork that now includes larger bumper intakes and typical of a Chinese market vehicle – an abundance of chrome garnishing around the front.
VW is offering two grille options with Lavida. The one is a traditional version, with horizontal slats, while the other is more reminiscent of something you’d see on a Mercedes-Benz A- or C-Class, with a single horizontal slat holding the VW badge in place. This ‘Star edition’ grille has a distribution of small rectangles set against a black background, supposedly replicating stars on a clear night.
Designed have applied a similar updated LED light diode treatment to Lavida’s rear taillamps and there is even a trace of integrated spoiler lip, on the boot lid.
Cabin architecture benefits from a larger floating touchscreen, to navigate the infotainment functions, and some optional red accents and trim stitching.
High-speed cruising performance is of negligible importance in China, and engine specification is unconfirmed.
A confident deduction can be made from the ‘280TSI’ badging, that VW’s 1.4-litre TSI engine is being used, in a 110 kW/250 Nm state of tune. VW’s nomenclature strategy in China indicates status, by numerals, instead of any correspondence to power output – in either horsepower or kilowatts.

Volkswagen reveals 350bhp Jetta GLI saloon concept
Four-door ‘GTI with a trunk’ gets a hardware upgrade and MASSIVE arches
Reports of the sports saloon’s death have, sadly, not been greatly exaggerated, which means few will take notice of this outlier. Volkswagen has revealed the Jetta GLI Performance concept, and it’s rather appealing.
Because it's not another crossover or SUV, and it celebrates the Golf GTI sibling's long history. Indeed VW’s Californian design centre wanted to take the performance Jetta and transform it into something worthy of a show where the wider your arch, the higher your score.
To that end, this one takes a 2022 GLI ‘Autobahn’ model – complete with a six-speed manual for full museum piece – and adds nearly an inch of additional arch front and back. There are vents on the arches too, tied front and back by wider, larger side skirts.
There’s a reprofiled front that allows more air to be ingested by that modified 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, while a more "muscular" rear finishes off the bodywork adjustments. The Familiar EA88 Gen 3 unit features a new cold air intake and high performance intercooler, along with an oil management kit and oil cooler aid.

Back in the 1980s, the Volkswagen Jetta CLi was a highly sought-after sedan in South Africa. It was essentially a Golf GTI with a boot, and in 16-valve form, it was pretty quick for its day.
The CLI nameplate faded into obscurity with the 8V-only third-generation model, although the legendary VR6 certainly kept things exciting in that generation, and the CLi badge fell away altogether when the fourth iteration of the Jetta was launched in the late ’90s.
But that’s enough history for today. The point is that the CLi has always had an equivalent, the GLi, in the US market, and it exists to this day as something of a booted GTI based on the latest-generation Jetta that was never launched locally.
And now, Volkswagen’s North America division is showing its further potential, with the Jetta GLI Performance Concept that was revealed at the SEMA show in Las Vegas this week.
Not only does it boast a wide-body kit and hunkered down stance, but Volkswagen has also teamed up with RacingLine to perform some serious tinkering beneath the bonnet of the concept car. The modified Jetta’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 260kW and 405Nm, up from the standard GLI’s 170kW and 350Nm outputs.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI 40th Anniversary Edition
Volkswagen of America Inc. announced the start of production of the limited 40th Anniversary Edition of the 2024 Jetta GLI, which will be available exclusively in North America. Since the GLI debuted in 1984, dubbed a "GTI with a trunk," its mission has been simple: to deliver an accessible German performance sedan. To celebrate 40 years of delivering a fun to drive vehicle without sacrificing any of the usability and efficiency that drivers expect from the brand, a limited run of 1,984 units will be produced for the U.S.
The vehicle will be offered in three exterior colors-Pure Gray, Pure White, and Rising Blue-with blackout detailing from front to back contrasting with the GLI's trademark red trim. Sleek 18-inch wheels in a black, ten-spoke design are met with a black grille, mirror caps, door handles, and spoiler for a razor-sharp design.
Inside, 40th anniversary details abound. Embossed molecular cloth seats, uniquely fabricated for this limited-edition trim, will vary in each of the 1,984 vehicles produced, like a one-of-a-kind fingerprint. Engraved cupholders feature the GLI logo in one and 1984 in the other, while seat tags and front door sills read "GLI 40" and the steering wheel bears a "40" clip at the six o'clock position.
