Aston Martin's first all-electric production car./

Aston Martin Rapide E

Aston Martin Lagonda has revealed the final production-ready iteration of its first all-electric production car, with the spectacular Aston Martin Rapide E making its world debut at China's Auto Shanghai 2019 motor show.

Unveiled by Aston Martin Executive Vice President & Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Rapide E is a pivotal model for the luxury marque. Following the success of previous special-edition models, including Aston Martin Vulcan, the Vanquish Zagato family and DB4 GT Continuation, Rapide E continues to deliver a superior level of performance, craftmanship and exclusivity, while also propelling Aston Martin into the all-electric realm.

The first car to be built at Aston Martin's state-of-the-art St Athan production facility - the brand's Home of Electrification - Rapide E represents a pioneering first step towards achieving the company's wider electrification strategy and the successful fruition of Lagonda - the world's first zero-emission luxury brand. A special edition with a production run strictly limited to 155 units, Rapide E has been developed in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE).

Shown for the first time here in Shanghai today, Aston Martin's design and engineering teams have worked in partnership to extract the optimal aerodynamic performance available from the Rapide's elegant form. Traditional metal vanes give way to a striking honeycomb front grille. With lower cooling requirements demanded of the EV powertrain, Aston Martin's aerodynamic engineers have been given the freedom to optimize the aperture of the frontal area, minimising airflow through the car's body, improving the car's aerodynamic efficiency and increasing range as a result.

New Aston Martin Rapide E revealed with over 600bhp

Just 155 examples of Gaydon's all-electric Porsche Taycan rival will be built, with price yet to be confirmed

Aston Martin has revealed its production-ready Rapide E electric luxury saloon at the Shanghai motor show.

Previewed by various conceps, this Rapide E is the final version that will be delivered to customers later this year. It is significant both as the first Aston EV and the first model to leave the brand’s new ‘home of electrification’ facility in St Athan, Wales.

Limited to 155 examples and available to order now at an undisclosed price, the Rapide E features a front end redesigned from the standard Rapide to aid cooling and aerodynamics. It also provides a visual link to Aston’s latest models such as the DBS Superleggera.

Less visible but equally significant are the changes to the underfloor, directing airflow from the front splitter to a new, larger rear diffuser made possible by the removal of the exhaust system. Numerous other changes add up to an 8% improvement in aero efficiency over the old petrol-powered Rapide.

The interior has been overhauled, too, bringing the nine year-old Rapide’s design up to date with the rest of the range. The most significant upgrade is the 10in digital instrument display showing key information such as battery charge level, motor power levels, energy usage and regenerative braking. Aston also claims extensive use of carbon fibre throughout the cabin to help reduce weight.

The Rapide E’s electric propulsion system is packaged within the space left by the removal of the original 6.0-litre V12 engine. It’s powered by an 800V battery pack encased in carbon fibre and kevlar, feeding two rear-mounted electric motors, making a ‘combined target output’ of just over 602bhp and 701 lb ft of torque.

Aston claims a sub-4.0sec 0-60mph time, a 50-70mph time of 1.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. Though those figures don’t better the fastest Tesla models, Aston claims the performance is “not restricted to a narrow window of battery charge of climatic conditions”, instead delivered in a “consistent and repeatable way”.

The car’s range is pegged at just over 200 miles under the new, more realistic WLTP measuring regime. The 800v battery system is capable of delivering 100kW or higher of battery charge using a suitable charger, while an on-board AC charger can take the Rapide E from empty to full in three hours

First Electric Aston Martin Rapide E Revealed

Aston Martin has shown its first production Electric Vehicle (EV) at the Shanghai Auto Show. Meet the Rapide E!

The Rapide E is Aston Martin’s first step towards an electrified future with its zero-emission luxury brand, Lagonda, expected to produce a fully electric production crossover by 2022 which will be based on the recently-revealed Lagonda All-Terrain Concept.

Dr Andy Palmer, President and Group CEO, Aston Martin Lagonda, commented: "Unveiling the Rapide E will be a huge moment for Aston Martin. As our first all-electric production car, it is a truly historic step. One that signals Aston Martin is prepared for the huge challenge of an environmentally responsible and sustainable future. As a car company we cannot afford to passively allow that future to come to us; we have to actively chase it. Only by doing this can we learn and prepare, but also preserve those things we love as drivers and car enthusiasts. That's why it was so important to me that in embracing EV technology we should not let go of those unique qualities that define an Aston Martin. I believe Rapide E embodies that desire and paves the way for a hugely exciting future."

Electric Power

Gone is the 6.0-litre V12 engine which is now replaced by an 800-volt electrical architecture battery with 65 kWh capacity and wrapped in Kevlar and carbon fibre. A total of 5 600 lithium-ion cells produce 448 kW and 950 Nm which is directed to rear-mounted electric motors with a limited-slip differential.

In terms of performance, the rear-wheel drive Rapide E will sprint from zero to 100 kph in roughly 4 seconds with a top speed of 250 kph.

The Rapide E is said to have a range of 322 km and almost 300 km charge can be achieved in an hour using a 400 V/ 50 kW charger. Faster charging can be achieved by using an 800 V/100 kW outlet which can charge almost 500 km in one hour.

Aston Martin shelves production plans for Rapide E electric saloon

Rapide E will now become an electrification research project as limited production plans are axed, Autocar understands

Aston Martin will not put its first pure-electric model, the Rapide E, into production as originally planned, Autocar understands.

First revealed in 2015 as a concept and confirmed for production in 2017, Aston had essentially finished the car’s development by the time it made its dynamic debut at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was planned to make limited production at the end of last year, with 155 examples mooted at an undisclosed price.

However, a source close to the firm has told Autocar it will now become a research project used to further Aston’s broader electrification programme, with no intention of producing customer cars. It’s not clear yet how many orders of the model were taken, or whether refunds will have to be issued.

The British firm is focusing most of its efforts on the launch of the DBX, a crucial model that it hopes will have the desired impact of improving its difficult financial position. First deliveries of the super-SUV will commence in the second quarter of 2020.
