Audi has cancelled plans for an electric RS6 e-tron

Another long-promised super-EV has been binned before seeing the light of day – what’s going on?

Remember 2022’s Audi A6 e-tron concept? If not, there’s a picture of it above. With its enormous wheels, huge diffuser and widescreen ‘grille’, it was a dead ringer for how an electric RS6 would look.

Well, forget it. Audi insiders have admitted to TopGear.com the RS6 e-tron project is dead, meaning the A6 e-tron family will remain crowned by the current S6 e-tron, which offers up 543bhp of quattro dual-motor wallop and whooshes from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds.

The reasoning, we are assured, is not that Audi couldn’t build anything faster. Indeed, it already sells the 923bhp RS e-tron GT Performance saloon capable of 0-62mph in just 2.5sec.

Rather… it doesn’t sell. Not enough, at any rate. Audi insiders say there simply hasn’t been the demand from the RS6 faithful for the company to plough on developing a dual-motor hyperwagon with Tesla Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire levels of punch. The EV landscape is in a very different place from the ‘electrify all the things’ head-rush of, say, five years ago.

High-performance electric wagon dream dashed as Audi scraps RS6 E-tron

Audi has reportedly canceled the all-electric RS6 e-tron, sending ripples through the electric vehicle community. This quite surprising decision was made apparently because of a weak market demand for high-performance electric cars, leaving many enthusiasts disappointed.

The RS6 e-tron was meant to be a revolutionary vehicle, an all-electric twin to the forthcoming plug-in hybrid RS6 Avant. Spy shots of aggressively styled A6 e-tron prototypes, both in Sportback and the revered Avant wagon forms, fueled speculation and excitement. These test mules sported larger bumper intakes and more pronounced diffusers, clear indicators of the high-performance RS treatment.

This cancellation suggests a potential change of strategy for Audi and possibly the wider industry. The overall market for electric cars continues to grow, but the niche for ultra-high-performance EVs may not be as strong as some manufacturers had hoped. Many automakers are wondering if the thrill of silent acceleration is enough to convince buyers away from the visceral roar of a traditional combustion engine.

With the RS6 e-tron now off the table, the mantle of the most powerful A6 e-tron falls to the S6 e-tron. This model delivers 405 kW from its dual electric motors - some 50 horsepower short of the last gas-powered Audi RS6. It is built on the advanced Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, a joint effort between Audi and Porsche. The S6 e-tron has a 100 kWh battery pack, offering a respectable range of up to 670 km on a single charge.

Audi Gifts MotoGP-Winning Márquez Brothers Bespoke RS 6 Avants

Following their 1-2 finish at the 2025 FIM MotoGP World Championship, brothers Marc and Álex Márquez were each gifted customised Audi RS 6 Avant performances from Audi. By: Julian Rael Gordon

The 2025 FIM MotoGP World Championship saw motorsport champions Marc and Álex Márquez finish in a 1-2 position, respectively. And to commemorate this achievement and their performance throughout the season, they were each gifted a customised Audi RS 6 Avant quattro performance from Audi Spain.

Finished in Mythos Black paintwork, replete with Daytona Grey wing mirrors, Marc’s RS 6 Avant rolls on Matte Black 22-inch alloy wheels. Sited behind the latter are red carbon-ceramic brake callipers. Álex’s example features Daytona Grey exterior paint, Mythos Black wing mirrors, Matte Titanium Grey alloys, and blue brake callipers. The two examples also feature distinctive wheels.

Further distinguishing these RS 6 Avants from the “standard” model, in lieu of embossed ‘RS’ logos, the seats of Marc and Álex’s RS 6 Avants feature their racing numbers – 73 and 93, respectively. The pews of their respective examples also feature contrast stitching resembling their teams’ hues: red for Ducati Lenovo and blue for Gresini for whom Marc and Álex races, respectively. The duo’s racing numbers, along with ‘Audi Sport’ and their initials appear on their respective cars’ illuminated door sills.
