2020 Audi RS6 Avant (C8)

ROAD TEST: Audi RS6 Avant quattro tiptronic

TEST SUMMARY

It’s the impression of fine balance be it that between the ridiculous and sublime, or just the sterling job Audi’s engineers have done to house a nuclear warhead of a powerplant in an estate car that makes the RS6 such a rewarding car to pilot. If you want to sink back into those bolstered seats, gently dip the pedal and waft along, it willingly obliges and quietly decants you at your destination, relaxed and refreshed. Select one of the sportier drivetrain presets and it’ll happily play … manual gearshifts become almost video game fast; the steering and suspension tauten just enough to peel away a layer of isolation from the road, and the engine eagerly serves up everything it’s got to rocket you into corners. The finely balanced chassis and vast reserves of grip will rein you in before catapulting you to the next twisting section of tarmac. It’s incongruous yet intoxicating and may well be the pick of Audi’s RS litter.

Mansory And MTM Team Up To Build Menacing Audi RS 6 Avant

Big tuners rarely collaborate these days but MTM and Mansory decided to team up to create one very unique Audi RS 6 Avant.

The wagon from Ingolstadt has been treated to a very extreme makeover consisting of the outlandish body kit from Mansory and some tuning from MTM.

Under the hood, the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 has been fitted with MTM’s stage 2 kit which cranks output up to 800 hp (596 kW) and 1,167 Nm (861 lb-ft) of torque. This new grunt sees the wagon sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 3 seconds and run to a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).

Audi RS6 E-tron due as 600bhp EV performance estate

Audi's hot S and RS family to transition to battery power, spearheaded by RS6 E-tron

As Audi gears up to launch its final internal-combustion car in just five years’ time, the race is on to transition its Audi Sport division into an electric-only performance brand.

Audi Sport’s portfolio of petrol and diesel cars is larger than ever before, comprising uprated S and RS-badged versions of every model in Audi’s ICE line-up except for the A1 Sportback supermini. The hot E-tron GT, however, remains its only electric RS offering. The hot versions of the E-tron and E-tron Sportback SUVs wear just an S badge and the division has yet to show more potent derivatives of the new Q4 E-tron and Q4 E-tron Sportback.

The RS E-tron GT offers a glimpse at Audi Sport’s electric future and indicates how its offerings will be differentiated from their regular counterparts.

Crucial to the transformation plan will be maintaining the variety and completeness of Audi’s line-up (which today comprises 17 model lines) to avoid losing customers along the way, so a near-direct replacement for every current model is on the cards. For example, the recently revealed A6 E-tron concept heavily previews the electric successor to today’s A6, and it will no doubt follow its predecessor in being offered with a performance range-topper tuned by Audi Sport.

Although the A6 E-tron isn’t intended as an immediate replacement for the A6, it will occupy the equivalent segment in the EV market, and Audi bosses have all but confirmed that an estate version is on the way, too.

All of which means the RS6 Avant is due an electric successor as well, continuing a model line that stretches back to the V10-engined C5 generation of 2002.

While the current C8-generation RS6 arrived two years after the standard A6, the RS6 E-tron could well be launched at the same time as the standard A6 E-tron in 2023, following the example set by the E-tron GT and RS E-tron GT.

ABT RS6-S and RSQ8-S lined-up for January launch

Come mid-January 2022, the world of high end tuning will just a little bit sweeter with the introduction of the ABT RS6-S and RSQ8-S.

Managing partner Hans-Jürgen Abt ezplains, “Both score points with spectacular carbon add-on parts, striking alloy wheels, perfectly balanced suspensions and performance enhancements on a super sports car level.”

Powered by the well-known 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, both models are available with 515 kW and 880 Nm. Should that still not be sufficient, a further increase to 544 kW and 920 Nm is available, too.

In addition to the powertrain upgrades, however, ABT also provide an array of aerodynamics parts, all fashioned from carbon fibre. The aerodynamics kits consist of a striking front lip with the respective model’s name, as well as side skirts and front and rear skirts and blades. The rear is finished off with a two-part spoiler, as well as the ABT stainless steel exhaust system with its four 102 mm tailpipes.

Christmas tree does 296 km/h while strapped to 596 kW Audi RS6 Avant

As one would expect from famed American tuners Hennessey Performance, their version of Audi’s already wild RS6 Avant is ridiculous. 596 kW is certainly enough to catapult Ingolstadt’s finest wagon past the 300 km/h mark, however, ‘tis the season to be jolly, so why not see how fast the wild wagon can go with a Christmas tree on the roof…

The seasonal speed record of 295 km/h breaks Hennessey’s previous best – 291 km/h achieved with a 745 kW Hennessey Jeep Trackhawk in 2019.

While conducting final high-speed testing of the Venom F5, focusing on tyres, braking and aerodynamics at speeds in excess of 400 km/h, the Christmas tree record was set with Mrs Hennesey’s personal Audi RS6 Avant. This comes ahead of Hennessey’s attempt to exceed 300 mph in early 2022 with the Venom F5.

“We wanted to see what my wife’s Audi station wagon would run without the tree and we managed 205 mph. Then, the real holiday fun began when we mounted a real Christmas tree on the roof. To our surprise, her wagon ran a very respectable 183 mph,” said John Hennessey, company Founder and CEO.

The Hennessey Performance team build more than 600 high-performance cars and bakkies every year, and in 2021 the 65+ strong team focussed on finetuning the Venom F5 hypercar. They are already looking ahead to Project Deep Space, the company’s first fully electrified Hyper-Lux GT.
