New BMW 4 Series Coupe spotted with minimal camouflage

Audi A5 rival will arrive in early 2020, packing a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains

The second-generation BMW 4 Series Coupé has been spied with a reduced level of disguise, giving an early hint of the styling of the new two-door Audi A5 Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe rival due on sale early next year.

The new BMW model, spied while being loaded on to the back of a truck near the German car maker’s engineering headquarters in Munich, displays a clear family resemblance with the larger 8 Series. It features a pronounced bonnet, heavy curved roofline, angled rear window and a pronounced shoulder-line over the rear wheels.

Alongside the coupé model spied here, BMW is also developing a successor model to the 4 Series Cabriolet featuring a fabric roof in place of the metal structure used by the current generation, as well as a follow-up to the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The 4 Series Coupe is based on the latest variant of BMW’s CLAR (cluster architecture) platform. It supports both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, though unlike the larger 8 Series, developments such as air suspension and four-wheel steering are not planned to be offered as part of its planned seven-year life cycle.

The engine line-up will be similar to that of the latest 3 Series with an extended range of 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder powerplants to be offered from the outset of sales.

The next BMW 4 Series has been spied by our German photographers. Here’s what you can expect

Despite wearing heavy camouflage, these latest spy shots of the new BMW 4 Series coupe provide a hint of what the model will look like. ‘

The headlights and taillights appear to be the real deal and have some resemblance to those seen on the new 8 Series. The overall silhouette looks powerful with an attractive sloping roofline that gives it a sleek look. While this is just a prototype, more revealing details are expected in the coming weeks and months.

Engines are also likely to mimic those offered in the 3 Series range which means turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engine choices can be expected. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive will also be offered on select derivatives. A new BMW M4 is also expected to offer at least 352 kW from a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine while the more hardcore M4 Competition will pack up to 375 kW.

The second-generation BMW 4 Series Coupé has been spotted undergoing dynamic testing at the Nürburgring, ahead of going on sale early next year.

The new two-door Audi A5 Coupé and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé rival, previously spied on a truck near BMW's Munich headquarters, displays a clear family resemblance with the larger 8 Series. It features a prominent bonnet, heavily curved roofline, angled rear window and a pronounced shoulder line over the rear wheels.

Alongside the coupé model spied here, BMW is also developing a successor model to the 4 Series Convertible, which will feature a fabric roof in place of the metal structure used by the current generation, and a follow-up to the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupé.

What you see here is the all-new BMW 4 Series coupe being tested on the Nurburgring. Here's what we know so far about the Bavarian newcomer.

These 2 images show the 2020 BMW 4 Series coupe on the Nurburgring. Given the subtle hints of design, we suspect the 4 Series is going to adopt a more GT approach than just a 2-door version of the 3 Series sedan.

In terms of engines, it would be surprising to us to not have the entire 3 Series powertrain portfolio carried over. This would mean you'd have the choice of 420i, 430i, M440i xDrive as well as diesel options. We suspect the model you see here is the M440i xDrive as the rear exhaust style is identical to that of the soon-to-be-launched M340i xDrive. That model packs a 275 kW and 500 Nm punch from a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder and with all-wheel drive, it's capable of blitzing to 100 kph in a claimed 4.4 seconds.

Large kidney grille is inspired by 1930s 328 as BMW goes extravagant on new design language

BMW has revealed the Concept 4 Series Coupe at the Frankfurt motor show, previewing radically revamped styling for the second-generation version of the two-door coupé, due to launch in late 2020.

The new concept, designed as 85% production ready, shows how BMW is intending to give the Audi A5 Coupe rival a far more distinctive identity from the 3 Series on which it’s based, with a more ‘emotional and dynamic’ design that emphasises performance.

The front is dominated by a large new interpretation of the firm’s kidney grille, featuring a more vertical design that BMW says was inspired by the grille from the 328 coupé of the 1930s. The grille features raised elements in it, to give a three-dimensional effect.

The 2019 IAA Cars show in Frankfurt was the venue for the unveiling of the BMW Concept 4 - a future-focused interpretation of the BMW Group's enduring DNA that represents the magic of coupe driving at its most exciting.

"The BMW Concept 4 embodies the aesthetic essence of the BMW brand. It combines perfect proportions with a clear and precise design," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

The front end - the new face of the 4 Series range

The BMW Concept 4 hovers close to the road. The distinctive kidney grille, remarkable air intakes and prominently sculpted surfaces provide an immediate advert for the car's performance and its engaging character as a driver's car.

Grabbing the attention at the heart of the front end is the vertical kidney grille. "The kidney grille has always been a signature feature of BMW cars," reflects Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. "The BMW Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature. At the same time, the BMW Concept 4 offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range." The vertically oriented grille fits seamlessly into both the proportions of the front end and BMW's illustrious past. Indeed, its form and design reference legendary classics such as the BMW 328 or the BMW 3.0 CSi and therefore shine the spotlight on the BMW brand's long and successful history as a maker of fine coupes.

The BMW Concept 4 has been unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show, effectively previewing the next-generation 4 Series coupé.

The first thing you’ll probably notice is the bold new kidney grille (which the Munich-based firm describes as “distinctive”). Interestingly, the redesigned item is vertically positioned, with BMW claiming it references “legendary classics” such as the 328 and the 3.0 CSi.

BMW Concept 4 (with massive grille) previews new 4 Series

Thought the 7 Series had a big grille? Get a load of the new BMW Concept 4, which previews the face of the next-generation 4 Series, according to BMW.

What sets it apart from other modern day BMW kidney grilles is its vertical orientation, which harks back to BMWs of yesteryear, just on a much bigger scale. BMW mentions vehicles like the 328 and 3.0 CSi as design inspirations for the new look.

BMW design head Domagoj Dukec refers to the new grille as a “confident and classy take” on the traditional double kidney design.

Stylists also left a distinctive little touch in the form of intricate grating within the kidneys and air intakes, made up of small ‘number 4s’ joined together.

Another interesting feature is the LED headlight elements, which have no glass cover - instead they are worked into the body like 3D sculptures.

BMW design chief defends brand's 'expressive' new styling language

The senior vice-president of BMW Group Design has defended the latest styling language employed by the Munich-based firm, describing the recently revealed Concept 4 as “expressive”.

Revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2019, the BMW Concept 4 employs a radical new interpretation of the firm’s signature kidney grille, a design feature that quickly became a talking point.

Speaking to Autocar, Adrian van Hooydonk defended the automaker’s latest change in styling direction.

“I’m not a psychologist but I know BMW is a brand that not only has customers, it has fans. They know our entire design history and have strong opinions on that. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, it means we have really connected with these people on an emotional level,” he told the British publication.

“Okay, I know that there might be some discussion with fans because they’ve grown to love what you’ve just done and you’re changing it already.
