New Ford Puma crossover: first teaser image drops

Ford has released the first teaser image of its upcoming Puma crossover, confirming the fresh-faced, “SUV-inspired” newcomer will hit initial markets by the end of 2019.

While the original Puma was a small coupé built for Europe from 1997 to 2002, this latest version is a crossover that’s expected to slot in between the EcoSport and new Kuga.

Set to be produced at the Blue Oval brand’s Craiova assembly plant in Romania, the new Puma will boast what Ford describes as “class-leading uncompromised luggage capacity of 456 litres”.

The teaser image suggests the Puma will feature wing-top mounted headlamps and the obligatory raised ride-height.

Ford says power will come from a hybrid powertrain (in Europe, at least), combining a three-cylinder, 1,0‑litre EcoBoost petrol engine with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator and a 48‑volt lithium-ion, air-cooled battery pack. Expect a peak output of up to 115 kW.

Ford revives Puma name for "evocative" new small SUV

Blue Oval previews new compact crossover, one of the leading models in Ford’s European range restructure

Ford will bring back the Puma nameplate as a Fiesta-based compact crossover later this year, and has previewed the new model ahead of an expected unveiling in the summer.

The new machine, which has previously been spied testing in camouflage, will take the name of the two-door coupe the firm produced between 1997 and 2002 - also built on a Fiesta platform.

At first the new car was believed to be a replacement for the Ecosport, but we now know it will sit alongside that car as a sportier, more style-oriented alternative. The Puma’s design can be seen in part in Ford’s teaser image of the car, showing its front and side profile will be significantly different to the Ecosport and has more in common with the latest Fiesta and Focus.

Expect an interior that’s similar to the Fiesta and Focus, too, with the brand’s dashtop-mounted SYNC touchscreen infotainment system and much of the same switchgear. It’ll also offer a bigger boot, with 456-litres of ‘uncompromised’ luggage capacity. Ford will balance an SUV-like higher seating position with the desire to retain the Fiesta’s driver focus.

Ford has also revealed that the new Puma will be offered with a 153bhp mild hybrid powertrain, featuring a 1.0-litre Ecoboost three-cylinder turbo petrol engine mated a 48V belt-driven starter motor generator.

Am I the only one who thought Puma the shoe manufacturer? Title says crossover so I thought it was two brands working together. Like maybe we'd also get Puma Ford shoes that spontaneously combust when you run too fast.

The Puma was gorgeous in its day. I hope they can pull a rabbit out of the hat here.

Ford reveals new Puma as Fiesta-based compact SUV

Cleverly packaged crossover will offer 48V mild-hybrid tech and executive-grade features

Ford’s new Puma takes a classic name and applies it to a new car that is subtly but effectively different from its established SUV rivals.

Officially, the company describes the Puma as an “SUV-inspired crossover”, with its three standout virtues claimed to be “seductive styling”, ingenious rear stowage and the new 48V mild-hybrid petrol drivetrain.

The body’s flowing surfaces have been developed under what designer George Saridakis labels an “anti-wedge” policy. What he calls “separated” headlights and tail-lights are also a move against the current trends for “joining everything up”, Saridakis citing the industry fashion for full-width light bars across a vehicle’s tail.

The new Puma is based on Ford's existing B global small car architecture, the same as the Fiesta, but the platform’s inherent flexibility has allowed the Puma to be sized very specifically.

It is just 30mm higher than the new Fiesta and the front seating position is raised by the same amount. This is still a compact vehicle, but it is usefully longer than the Fiesta as well as wider, with a wider track. And it squeezes a surprising amount of interior space out of a vehicle that’s smaller than the Focus.

Saridakis says he and the project’s chief engineer, Norbert Steffens, worked in the styling studio with “cardboard and tape” trying to extract the maximum luggage space from the Puma structure. This crossover has a claimed 456 litres of boot space, whereas the Focus has just 370 litres.

They achieved this by way of what Ford calls a “lower load box”. Cut through the boot floor, the box is a useful 80 litres in capacity and even has a removable plug in the bottom to allow it to be washed out.

New Ford Puma revealed as 'SUV-inspired' small crossover

Ford has revealed its fresh-faced Puma (a nameplate first used on a small coupé built for Europe from 1997 to 2002), billing the newcomer as an “SUV-inspired” small crossover.

Set to hit the market in Europe at the end of 2019, the Puma will be built at Ford’s Craiova assembly plant in Romania. It runs on Ford’s B-car architecture, but employs a stiffer twist-beam rear suspension, larger shock absorbers, stiffer suspension bushes and “optimised” suspension top mounts.

Urge comes from the Blue Oval brand’s new EcoBoost Hybrid 48 V mild-hybrid powertrain, which integrates electric torque assistance (thanks to an 11,5 kW belt-driven integrated starter/generator) with the familiar 1,0‑litre three-cylinder petrol engine to deliver either 92 kW or 114 kW to the front axle, depending on the model.

In addition, buyers can choose from Ford’s range of conventional EcoBoost petrol and Ford EcoBlue diesel engines. Transmission options will include six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearboxes.

Interestingly, various “big-car” driver assistance features will be offered, including adaptive cruise control and speed-sign recognition. Ford claims the new Puma will also be the first in its segment to offer a hands-free tailgate and a lumbar massage function.

Up front, you’ll find Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, complete with an eight-inch central touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There’s also a 12,3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster on offer.

Also gonna go like fire?
This is actually a big issue for me. Ford South Africa has now twice caused the value of 2 of their models (that I know of) to plummet. First it was the Mondeo ST220, which was abruptly pulled from sale, and now the Kuga and the catching fire debacle.

It is not destined for South Africa - the VW T-Cross must be smiling either way to only see the EcoSport in the line-up.
