2020 Hyundai Creta (2nd Generation)

Pricing! New Hyundai Creta hits SA with three fresh engine options

The new Hyundai Creta has officially touched down in South Africa, with the front-driven local range now featuring three engine options and three transmission choices.

While the original line-up was limited to two engine options across three derivatives, the second-generation range features four variants (two of which can be specified in two-tone guise for an extra R5 000) and three powertrain choices.

The new line-up starts with the Creta 1,5 Premium at R374 900, which interestingly sees the entry-point drop some R14 000. This naturally aspirated petrol four-pot sends the front axle 84 kW and 143 N.m (down slightly on the outgoing 1,6-litre unit’s 90 kW and 150 N.m) via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Hyundai Automotive SA also offers this engine with a continuously variable transmission and the Executive trim level, which pushes the price to R429 900. With the CVT fitted, the claimed fuel consumption improves from 6,5 L/100 km to 6,3.

Pricing:

Hyundai Creta 1,5 Premium: R374 900
Hyundai Creta 1,5 Executive CVT: R429 900 (+R5 000 for two-tone)
Hyundai Creta 1,5 Diesel Executive AT: R469 900 (+R5 000 for two-tone)
Hyundai Creta 1,4 TGDI Executive DCT: R484 900

I got the previous generation Creta, the 1.6 Executive Automatic almost exactly one year ago, before discount offered the floor price was R335565, the current equivalent is R429900 which is a whopping R76335 more! And mine still have a proper automatic transmission, not the crappy CVT (or IVT as Hyundai calls it) transmission.

Looking at those pictures, it does not look like it's worth R485 000.

Hyundai Creta (2020) Launch Review

The 2nd-generation model of one of SA’s best-selling compact family cars has arrived on local shores. The first Hyundai Creta took its sweet time to be launched in Mzansi, but this one is all-new, fresh from the factory. We recently had a quick drive in the new top-spec 1.4 TGDI Executive DCT derivative.

Summary

The Creta has been a big seller ever since it landed in South Africa in 2017, especially because it's a bit larger than most compact family cars. It’s less clear if this new model will do the same; it’s by far a better product with more space, more refinement, quieter engines and better road manners, but its design is less palatable than before. Pricing is in line with its competitors and Hyundai’s warranty is always a plus in the decision-making process, but considering how similar it is to the Kia Seltos, both in price and platform, some buyers may be drawn to the slightly less "interesting" design of the Kia.

Hyundai announces name of upcoming (Creta-based?) seven-seater SUV

Hyundai in India has finally confirmed it plans to launch a seven-seater SUV later in 2021, announcing the newcomer will be called the “Alcazar”.

This nameplate was, of course, trademarked back in the first half of 2020.

The new model is rumoured to be based on the second-generation, five-seater Creta, which is likewise produced in India. It looks set to receive a revised grille, redesigned bumpers, new taillamps, model-specific alloys and larger dimensions to accommodate its third row of two seats. Expect the same powertrain options as those offered in the Creta.

All Hyundai Creta derivatives are sold with a 5-year/150 000 km warranty with an additional 2-year/50 000 km warranty on the powertrain. A 5-year/90 000 km service plan and a 7-year/150 000 km roadside assist package are included.

Verdict

The Creta's excellent family-car characteristics have, by and large, been successfully been carried over to the new model. There is generous occupant space and features aplenty, even though the 1.5 Executive is a middle-of-the-range offering. Despite the non-turbocharged petrol engine being mated with a CVT, it offers sufficient poke/overtaking ability, without emitting too much of that dreaded drone (which CVTs are known for) and its real-world fuel economy is admirable. We reckon only enthusiastic drivers will be disappointed by this transmission; it really is a near-ideal setup for the daily commute.

The changes are substantial enough for us to suggest current Creta owners should strongly consider upgrading to the 2nd-gen model, which has a diverse line-up. There are manual-'box derivatives and, for those who seek the ultimate in open-road economy, even a turbodiesel version. The added load-bay capacity and rear legroom have enhanced what was already an impressive compact family-car offering.

It's undisputable – a vehicle's exterior looks do constitute a substantial part of its overall's purchasing proposition, but potential purchasers really ought to look past the new Creta's controversial face (if they can – we ultimately could) and explore the highly practical and well-equipped newcomer. The Creta's no longer a study in understatement, yes, but then very few future Hyundai models will be...

Hyundai teases new Creta-based seven-seat SUV called the Alcazar

Hyundai is being careful not to leave any gaps in its SUV portfolio and the latest takes the form of a compact seven-seater called the Alcazar.

Hyundai’s Indian division has released a teaser sketch of its new creation ahead of its likely imminent reveal. Despite the unique name, the Alcazar is believed to be closely based on the Creta compact SUV and given the latter’s availability in South Africa there’s a fair chance that the new three-row high-rider will reach local shores at some point.

While the cabin is likely to be closely modelled on the recently launched second-generation Creta, Hyundai is promising ‘ample’ roof for both second and third row occupants, as well as the latest in cabin gadetry.

Hyundai Alcazar Expands Creta Range

The Korean carmaker has revealed its Creta-based new 7-seater SUV. Meet the new Hyundai Alcazar.

The Hyundai Alcazar shares the same platform as its Creta sibling, but physically it's fractionally longer by 30 mm. It also boasts a slightly longer wheelbase to accommodate the third row of seats. The Hyundai Alcazar will be available in 6-seater and 7-seater configurations.

Hyundai India says it has enhanced the Creta platform and focused on ride comfort with a reworked suspension setup. Inside, there are sliding seats, armrests and Hyundai is claiming best-in-segment cabin space. The seats can be folded down to increase carrying capacity.

As far as features go, the Hyundai Creta will feature 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with BlueLink, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats and seatback trays with cup and mobile holder.

Hyundai reveals new SA-bound compact seven-seat SUV called the Alcazar

Hyundai Motor India has pulled the covers of its new Alcazar, which is a compact seven-seat SUV that appears to be based on the Creta.

Hyundai South Africa tells us that the new model is under serious consideration for our market, with a view to possibly launching it by early 2022.

The local specifics, of course, will only be revealed nearer to the time, but expect our models to closely mirror what’s on offer in India.

However, it’s not clear whether SA buyers will get to choose between six-seat and seven-seat variants as is the case in its home market.
