New 2020 Kia Sorento to be revealed next month, report says

Korean media reports suggest Kia's largest SUV will be shown at a dedicated event on 17 February, with a plug-in hybrid variant on the cards

Kia will move its oldest model, the Sorento, into a new generation this year, and now reports from the company's home market suggest it will be revealed in a few weeks' time.

A report from The Korean Car Blog states strongly that the reveal, set to take place in South Korea, is planned for 17 February. This is also the date that domestic-market order books will open for the new car, the publication claims.

It could mean that the Sorento's European premiere would be the Geneva motor show in early March, although Autocar is awaiting confirmation of this from Kia UK.

Reports suggest Kia's largest SUV will be shown at a dedicated event on 17 February, with a plug-in hybrid variant on the cards

Images of the new Kia Sorento appear to have surfaced online, several weeks ahead of the SUV's expected official debut.

The pictures, posted by the Kurdistan Automotive Facebook page, look to show a pre-production prototype wearing minimal disguise. We can see that the new Sorento has a more square-edged design than its curvy predecessor, and the brand’s tiger nose grille will sit within a new front-end profile. The rear end design, meanwhile appears to take heavy inspiration from the firm's US-market Telluride large SUV, with vertically mounted brakelights and a chrome-style lower diffuser among the visible elements.

The leak also gives an idea of what to expect from the Skoda Kodiaq rival's interior. The dashboard features a substantial centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen flanked by a set of vertically mounted air vents, with little in the way of physical buttons and levers.

Earlier this week, a report from The Korean Car Blog stated strongly that the Sorento's full reveal, set to take place in South Korea, is planned for 17 February. This is also the date that domestic-market order books will open for the new car, the publication claims.

After a relatively quiet year on the new-product front in 2019, Kia South Africa will roll out a number of updated models in Mzansi in 2020, including an extensively reworked version of the Sorento during the 3rd quarter of the year. And, according to (quite revealing) spy images, the newcomer will look like this…

The recent introduction of the Seltos compact family car was a significant one for Kia Motors South Africa, which will follow up the launch with facelifts of the Picanto and Rio hatchback ranges in the coming months. The update to the Sorento – the Korean firm’s unibody rival to the bakkie-based SUV brigade (headed by the Toyota Fortuner), however, is arguably the most extensive of the lot.

These pictures – posted by Instagrammer onecar.1 and the Kurdistan Automotive Blog Facebook page overnight – show a near-production version of the updated Sorento. As was the case with its Hyundai Santa Fe cousin, the visual upgrade to Kia's adventure SUV model is significant; it incorporates design cues from the eye-catching Seltos and looks sportier and more square-jawed than ever.

Kia gives us a closer look at its all-new Sorento SUV

After releasing a pair of design sketches last week, Kia is now giving us a clearer view of its upcoming fourth-generation Sorento with these new renderings, while also showing us inside the cabin for the first time with four interior sketches.

The new model’s exterior design is certainly more butch than before, particularly at the front end and dare we suggest there’s more than just a little Mustang inspiration in those taillights at the back.

Inside Kia has gone for a wide dual-screen layout for the instruments and infotainment, which stretches out across two thirds of the dashboard. There’s no word on the specific technologies as yet, but Kia has promised a “range of innovations” that include advanced driver assistance gadgets as well as “progressive” infotainment and connectivity features.

The Korean carmaker also claims its new SUV will “raise the standards in its segment for practicality”, with interior space said to be on par with larger vehicles. As with the current Sorento, you can bank on gen-four offering seating for at least seven occupants.

Updated Kia Sorento Interior Teased

These latest interior sketches hint at what we can expect from the Sorento which is due to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020. Note the large digital instrument cluster and central infotainment system which appear to be visually connected which gives the Sorento a classy and premium feel. There also appears to be a third smaller screen below the central system which will probably take care of comfort functions such as seat ventilation and air conditioning.

Kia Motors Corporation has revealed the first official images of the new Kia Sorento, ahead of its first public appearance at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show.

The concept of 'refined boldness' inspired Kia's designers, who sought to maintain the robust, tough-looking aesthetic of earlier generations of Kia Sorento, while applying a greater degree of refinement and elegance. More stylish than ever, the Sorento's redefined design incorporates sharper lines and uninterrupted surfaces, making it noticeable more sculpted than its more round-edged predecessor. With more contemporary geometric details and more swept-back, elongated proportions, the result is a more confident, more mature and more desirable design than ever.

The more assertive 'face' of the Kia Sorento evolves, too, with a new interpretation of Kia's hallmark 'tiger nose' grille. Wider and more expansive, it wraps organically around the integrated headlamps on each side. The headlamps themselves feature a new 'tiger eye' LED daytime running light, adding extra focus to the design by depicting the intense impression of the lines around a tiger's eyes.

In profile, the proportions of the Kia Sorento are subtly adapted to make it appear longer, with shorter front and rear overhangs and a longer wheelbase. Its new proportions also extend the length of the bonnet, drawing the A-pillar 30 mm further back from the front axle for a more 'cab-rearward' design. The trailing edge of the hood wraps around the front wings and turns into a single, strong character line which extends along the side of the Sorento and flows into the new vertical tail lights.

Of course, the Korean firm had earlier released a handful of teaser images, giving us a look at both the inside and outside of the latest version of the Sorento (some spy images made their way online, too), which runs on an all-new platform.

Kia says its designers “sought to maintain the robust, tough-looking aesthetic of earlier generations” while applying a “greater degree of refinement and elegance”. The result is a Sorento that’s “noticeably more sculpted” than its more round-edged predecessor. The next-generation Kia Sorento has appeared in spy shots and been previewed in design sketches, but now we can show you official images. The Korean firm's 7-seater SUV will debut at next month’s Geneva Show and go on sale in South Africa during the 3rd quarter of 2020.

Although it would be an exaggeration to say we’ve seen as many spy shots of the Sorento on social media as of "upcoming Volkswagen Golf 8 performance derivatives undergoing winter testing", we’ve already published a couple of articles about Kia’s newcomer, based on Instagram and Facebook posts and design sketches.

Now that we can study these official photos (Kia is yet another brand to post images of its Geneva star ahead of the show), there aren’t major surprises compared with what we’ve already published, but there are tantalising details that weren’t visible before. First pics: Kia aims to raise the bar with all-new Sorento

Given the accurate teaser renderings that were doing their rounds recently, the fourth-generation Kia Sorento’s more muscular design doesn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Kia has released the first actual pictures of the new family-sized SUV ahead of its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3. Promising to “raise the standards” in its segment, the newcomer is built on an all-new platform and it will also be available with a hybrid drivetrain for the first time, although no other details about the engine line-up have been furnished as yet.

The cabin, meanwhile, makes strides in quality and digitalisation and the Korean carmaker claims that it has one of the highest-quality interiors found in any Kia to date, complete with blending metallic trims and embossed synthetic wood surfaces. As before, the new Kia Sorento will offer seating for up to seven occupants.

Following modern trends, the cockpit is all about screens, screens and more screens. The driver faces a new 31cm digital instrument cluster and there’s also a new 26cm central touchscreen that incorporates audio-visual navigation.

That’s as much as Kia is saying about the technological aspect at this stage, but it does promise that the new Sorento will be the most high-tech vehicle that the brand has ever created.

Kia has revealed new details of the next-gen Sorento ahead of the large SUV’s debut at the Geneva show next month.

The fourth-generation Skoda Kodiaq rival adopts a design distinctly different to that of its predecessor or any other Kia sold in Europe. This angular styling, which apes the larger Telluride, is likely to be a reflection of its greater sales status in the US than Europe.

The Sorento sits atop an all-new monocoque chassis, and its proportions have been altered with the aim of making it look longer, by way of shorter front and rear overhangs and a 35mm-longer wheelbase.

All other dimensions are only around 10mm greater, although space inside – especially for middle-row passengers – is said to be significantly enhanced, thanks to improved packaging. All UK models will be seven-seaters.

While local engine options have yet to be confirmed, Kia has announced the Sorento will be offered in some markets with an electrified powertrain. The latter hybrid system comprises the firm’s turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine, a 44,2 kW electric motor and 1,49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack.

The result, says Kia, is a combined total output of 169 kW and 350 N.m, providing what the firm describes as “low emissions with high levels of performance”. Interestingly, the battery pack is sited beneath the passenger cell so has had no impact on cabin or luggage space.

There’s also a new 2,2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which generates 149 kW and 440 N.m. The oil-burning mill is mated to a new eight-speed (wet) dual-clutch transmission. In addition, some markets will receive a turbocharged 2,5-litre petrol unit developing 207 kW and 421 N.m. As with the diesel mill, this forced induction engine is linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
