New Morgan Plus Four CX-T is rally-ready sports car
Just eight Plus Four off-roaders are planned to be built, each priced from £200,000
Morgan has shocked its supporters and much of the sports car world by launching a £200,000 limited-edition off-road version of its recently launched Plus Four roadster, dubbed CX-T, which is “designed explicitly for overland adventure”.
The car has a three-fold purpose, according to design chief Jon Wells, who has harboured a desire to produce an off-road Morgan for years. First, it is an opportunity to demonstrate the strength and rigidity of the new CX monocoque platform that underpins both the new-generation Plus Four and Plus Six models. Secondly, it pays homage to the historic durability of Morgan cars, demonstrated in extensive endurance trialling victories in the 112-year-old company’s earliest days. Thirdly, says Wells, it recognises the fact that many Morgan owners have tackled “extraordinary adventures” even in their standard models.
The CX-T project began in earnest early last year when one of Morgan’s new owners, Andrea Bonomi, chairman of the Italian-based Investindustrial private equity group that bought the Malvern Link concern in 2019, happened to see an illustration of an off-road Plus Four on the design department wall and asked if such a car could work.
Wells and Morgan MD Steve Morris were immediately keen on the idea, so a plan was hatched to build eight cars – several of which have already been sold to “friends” of Morgan and the investors themselves. “We don’t anticipate that the remaining cars will be without owners very long,” says Wells.

What’s the verdict?
It’s a curiosity. The car it most reminded me of was the Ariel Nomad, a car that’s entirely exoskeleton and has a similarly vague operational area, yet justifies itself by being a complete hoot to drive. The CX-T is in a similar vein: there’s no need for it, no job description it answers to and yet it has magnetic pull. But more than that I hope it might yet have a role to play: I hope the CX-T’s smooth riding, longer travel dynamics rub off on the road cars.

Morgan unveiled the Plus Four CX-T, a car with adventure at its core. A vehicle with capability not yet witnessed on a Morgan sports car, it opens up the possibility of routes, landscapes and destinations inaccessible by Morgan cars until now.
The Morgan Plus Four CX-T is inspired by Morgan's well documented history of competing in all-terrain endurance trials. As early as 1911, Morgan sports cars were competing and winning in trials competitions, and this spirit of adventure has been key to shaping the Morgan brand ever since. The more adventurous journeys that are frequently undertaken by Morgan customers all over the world have further fuelled the desire for Morgan to imagine the Plus Four CX-T.
Following the launch of the Plus Four in 2020, Morgan partnered with Rally Raid UK, renowned creator of Dakar race cars, to jointly design and engineer the Plus Four CX-T. One of the aims of the project is to demonstrate the capability and durability of Morgan's new CX-Generation platform, along with the Plus Four upon which the CX-T is based.
Just eight vehicles will be built, priced at £170,000 plus local taxes and supplied in full overland specification, with each customer having the opportunity to work alongside Morgan's design team to specify their own CX-T. Every Plus Four CX-T is built at Morgan's factory in Malvern, Worcestershire, before undergoing the final preparation and setup at Rally Raid UK's own workshop facilities. Morgan's design and engineering team have worked alongside Rally Raid UK throughout the programme to define the concept, specification, technical attributes, and aesthetic of the model.

Limited-edition Morgan Plus Four celebrates 60 years of Le Mans victory
Just 62 examples will be built in tribute to the model that won the 2.0-litre class at La Sarthe
Morgan has unveiled a limited-run Plus Four to celebrate 60 years since its class victory at Le Mans.
The Plus Four LM62 is based on the standard car and is a tribute to the Plus Four SuperSports that won the 2.0-litre class at the famous 24-hour race in 1962.
The LM62’s engine and technical specifications remain the same as that of the standard Plus Four, but several bespoke design changes pay homage to the race-winning car, which originally wore the numberplate TOK 258.
Each car receives dark-green exterior paint with a red hue and a special LM62 decal pack with number 29 roundels in white. The splitter and sports exhausts are finished in black.
For the first time on the Plus Four, the LM62 is equipped with a white hardtop, a feature that also harks back to the Le Mans winner.
Other race-inspired features include an LM62 badge at the rear of the car, silver painted wheels, driving spotlights and a Le Mans-style fuel filler cap.

This, to immediately invite the most obvious joke in motoring history, is the new Morgan Plus Four and Plus Six. They’re the first major update of the completely new cars that debuted all of 18 months ago – complete with bonded aluminium platforms and BMW powertrains. But the latest update ratchets up the modernity even further. We’ll explain.
To kick things off (or indeed pull them up), Morgan has apparently fitted an "all-new braking system" developed "alongside Continental and AP Racing". We’re pretty confident the new system still involves discs, pads and hydraulic pressure, but we’ll be sure to get back to you if that’s not the case.
There are new dampers and bushes as well, which, as you’d expect from a pretty much brand-new car (yes, we know... get your jokes out), are more of a development than a clean-sheet approach. Morgan’s focus appears to be on more refinement, compliance and progressive action – none of which you’d fault, really.
But should a new Plus owner still manage to get out of shape, they’ll likely be glad to find a first for Morgan: stability control. As is du jour, it can be "switched between levels of assistance depending on driving mode", but whether that includes a brave-pill, all-off setting (and if the ESC is truly off when you select it) is something we’ll have to test when the Plus Four and Six officially go on sale in January 2023.

Morgan Plus Six, which is wider with a more assertive appearance, presents a more contemporary aesthetic. Both vehicles will benefit from the new features, and their list of options and configurations will be closely aligned, ensuring a cohesive tailoring experience for customers.
