Wow. I'll say one thing about the Peugeot 2008, the exterior styling is fantastic!

Interior wise is also appealing, although the steering wheel seems a bit under styled compared to the cabin.

Second-generation Peugeot 2008 unveiled with bold new look!

The new, boldly styled Peugeot 2008 has been revealed, boasting three powertrain options: petrol, diesel and all-electric.

Running on the PSA Group's latest Common Modular Platform, the second-generation 2008 measures 4 300 mm long, (up a whopping 140 mm on its predecessor), 1 770 mm wide and 1 530 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 650 mm. Peugeot claims a boot volume of 360 litres, regardless of powertrain.

The new version of the French crossover will be offered (in Europe, at least) with a range of petrol and diesel engines. In early 2020, the battery electric e-2008 variant will join the line-up.

The latter is powered by a 100 kW/260 N.m electric motor mated to a 50 kWh battery (sited under the floor). Under the latest WLTP regulations, Peugeot says the zero-emissions SUV will offer a range of 310 km. Capable of supporting 100 kW rapid charging technology, an 80 percent charge will take 30 minutes, says Peugeot, while a full charge using conventional 7,4 kW and 11 kW fast chargers will take “between eight hours and five hours”.

French carmaker, Peugeot, has unveiled an all-new version of its 2008 SUV. Herewith the details...

Taking design notes from the larger Peugeot 3008 SUV and the compact Peugeot 208 hatchback, this is the new 2008 compact SUV. It's a striking vehicle, both inside and out.

In terms of powertrain, we're looking at electric, petrol and diesel options. All engines comply with the latest Euro 6 standards and are fitted with Stop/Start and a particle filter. The petrol engine is the tried-and-tested turbocharged 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine and is available in 3 states of tune including a 74 kW version, a 96 kW variant and finally, there's a 115 kW flagship offering. There will be a choice of either a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

While Peugeot SA has yet to officially confirm the new 2008 for local introduction, a local spokesperson is hopeful that it will arrive on local shores in 2020. Do you want to see it in South Africa?

Peugeot's new generation 2008 debuts with more dramatic design

Peugeot’s second-generation 2008 has taken a more dramatic design direction and like the new 208 hatchback, the new compact SUV is built around Peugeot’s new CMP (Common Modular Platform) and, depending on the market, will be available with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains.

While its exterior sheetmetal is unique, the 2008 shares its cabin with the aforementioned 208 hatch, which means it gets the latest ‘3D i-Cockpit’ command centre and latest-generation head-up display. There’s also room for personalisation, with a choice of eight RGB LED colours.

The big news on the powertrain front is the availability of a full electric powertrain for the first time in the all-new e-2008 derivative. The electric motor produces 100kW and the 50kWh battery, which is positioned in the vehicle’s floor, is said to allow a driving range of 310km between charges, with an 80 percent charge taking 30 minutes when connected to a 100kW rapid charger.

The e-2008 also comes with an app that allows drivers to pre-set charging times, as well as heating and air conditioning, remotely via a smartphone.

Peugeot South Africa can't at this stage confirm when the new 2008 will reach local shores, but says it won't be before next year.

New Peugeot 2008 revealed as more grown-up crossover SUV

The first all-electric Peugeot SUV gains i-cockpit interior upgrades, modernised styling

The all-new 2008 will introduce a fully electric model to Peugeot’s burgeoning SUV line-up for the first time.

The new car, which will arrive in the UK early next year, is 140mm longer than its predecessor and 20mm lower. At 4.3m, the new 2008 is now only 150mm shorter than the larger 3008 SUV. A 60mm longer wheelbase helps boost boot space by 10 litres up to 434 litres across all versions including the electric e-2008, while also increasing rear passenger legroom over the outgoing model.

Sitting on Peugeot’s CMP (Common Modular Platform) architecture, which also underpins the upcoming 208 and Vauxhall Corsa superminis, as well as the current DS 3 Crossback, the new 2008 will launch in the UK with a familiar line-up of PSA petrol engines, as well as the debuting electric powertrain. All cars are front-wheel drive, with optional Grip Control traction control available for driving on changeable road conditions.

Should I buy one?

The e-2008 finds itself as an unusual proposition. This is one of the best compact crossovers there is (not a high bar, granted) and with an electric option that is deliberately un-weird.

I’m still waiting for a small SUV that really sets new standards and, if you like driving, I still think you’d be better off with a lower car that is nicer to drive. But the e-2008 has distilled things to a simple proposition: if you like a 2008, does a zero emission variant suit the way you’ll use the car? As Guillame Clerc, the chief engineer on the 208 and 2008 projects says: “If we can’t sell electric 208s or 2008s, the world isn’t ready for EVs.” My guess is that it’ll do just fine.

Should I buy one?

To my eyes, the combusted 2008 is probably at its best in 129bhp form and in, maybe, Allure trim (one from bottom, £23,550). That brings the cool 3D cockpit and while there’s a smaller touchscreen there’s phone mirroring, without the price looking too gulpsome (although, sure, I know it’s the monthly price that matters to most buyers).

I still prefer conventional hatchbacks because, with a lower centre of gravity, they tend to be nicer to drive and more efficient, but the 2008 does leap above the abilities of most of the compact SUV competition. A true bar raiser, though? Still waiting for that one.

Should I buy one?

I’d probably still go for a regular hatchback, but in the context of its classmates there’s enough to like about the 2008 to recommend one to anyone who actually wants to buy a compact SUV.

It drives well enough, has an impressively refined engine and is generally very easy to get along with thanks to good control weights and a (mostly) comfortable driving position. Its 3D-effect dials are a cool USP too, even if the rest of its infotainment software isn’t quite on the same level for slickness of response as what you’d get in some of its German rivals.

All of this doesn’t quite forgive the fact that the compact SUV class as a whole is still among the hardest to get properly excited about. But in terms of the way it combines good looks, ease of use, and general likeability, the 2008 is really pretty good. Miles better than a DS 3 Crossback, in any case.

Should I buy one?

For a compact SUV-seeker with a fancy for going electric, the e-2008 will make a strong case. Deliberately similar in feel to its petrol and diesel siblings, it will ensure an effortless first step across the divide.

Plus, it’s cheaper than rivals (from £28,150), better to drive and more luxurious inside. Its main downfall, which will deter a fair few, is that inferior range.
