Seat hasn’t been shy of dropping teasers of the new Leon ahead of its unveiling tomorrow. In December it released a video showing details of the model, and recently gave us a look at the upcoming car’s rear in a new image.

The fourth-generation of the Spanish brand's Ford Focus rival will be revealed at a dedicated event on 28 January. Seat insiders have called the new car the biggest step forward in the model's history, with a significant improvement in cabin technology and the introduction of variants with electrified powertrains.

The latest picture expands on the fleeting view of the Leon’s back shown in the above video. It shows the new car gains a full-length lighting strip across the tailgate that echoes that of Seat's El Born EV. We can also see a new design of rear name badge than on the outgoing car, while at the front, the video showed the return of full LED headlights. The new Leon is also set to gain ambient lighting features in the cabin.

The new Seat Leon has been partially revealed in new images posted online ahead of its official unveiling tomorrow.

The pictures were posted by Instagram user CochesPias, and show the front and rear ends of the Ford Focus rival fully unwrapped. Visible details include an angular front grille design mirroring that of the firm's large Tarraco SUV, and the horizontal rear light bar shown in official preview images released by Seat.

Seat has brought its Leon model into the 2020s with an all-new generation, promising greater efficiency, a new technological standard and a greater emphasis on design than ever before. It’s also the first Seat to come with both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.

Unveiled for the first time in both hatchback and estate forms, the new Leon will make its public debut at the Geneva motor show in March. It will be joined there by the new Cupra Leon performance model, itself available in both petrol and plug-in hybrid guises. First examples of the Ford Focus rival will arrive in UK dealerships the same month.

The fourth-generation Leon continues a lineage that has accumulated more than two million global sales since its beginning in 1999. It’s the latest of the Volkswagen Group’s new MQB-based C-segment models to be revealed, after the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf and the Mk4 Skoda Octavia.

This edgy, triangle-obsessed block of car is the new Seat Leon, to almost everyone. Except you, if you Know About Cars. Because we know that the new Seat Leon is, like every Seat Leon before it, a secret Volkswagen Golf in disguise. It’s a Golf that’s had flamenco lessons and been for a paella. It’s full of Spanish flair and foot-clicking passion… but underneath, it’s all Golf. And soon, it’ll be all Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia as well.

Yes, the onslaught of new VW Group hatchbacks is upon us, folks. So, why would you choose the new Seat Leon? It might well be for the looks. The old one was already fairly angular, but this new one’s been styled with even sharper pencils. There are creases in the doors and a downright furious facial expression. Out back, a full-width lightbar. People who Don’t Know About Cars might assume they’re following a new Porsche 911 in the dark…

Right, engines. Many choices here: petrol, diesel, and two flavours of hybrids: one you have to plug-in, but with better eco-numbers, and one that you don’t. Soon, there’ll be a Cupra go-faster hot hatch quick version, which has a hard act to follow. The old Cupra was – just maybe – more exciting and better value than a Golf GTI. Awkward.

Golf 8's chic cousin - new Seat Leon is forbidden fruit for SA

Despite its rather short lifespan on the South African market, between 2006 and 2008, the Seat Leon garnered a loyal following, particularly in its Cupra format where it showed the Golf GTI of the time a clean pair of heels.

Sadly the Volkswagen-owned Spanish brand was pulled from our market following a bungled marketing strategy that saw the vehicles initially positioned more upmarket than they were Europe, but the cars that South Africans grew to love in those two short years have continued to evolve and the latest to emerge looks to be the best and most advanced yet.

On Tuesday night Seat pulled the covers off its fourth-generation Leon, which shares its MQB platform with the Golf 8, but as has become the norm the Spanish hatchback gets a more striking design than its German cousin. As before, the latest Leon is being offered as a five-door hatchback and wagon.

The Leon gets its own unique look inside too, although like the Golf it takes connectivity to the next level with cloud-based Car2X technology that warns drivers about upcoming traffic lights or incidents, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay, ‘natural’ voice control and remote access to the car’s data. Driver assistance systems include the new Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, which uses satnav and camera data to proactively amend the cruise speed in accordance with the road layout ahead.

But local fans are no doubt wondering where the Cupra version is - and that reveal, we presume, is for another day. The initial range does however include FR versions, which get racy design enhancements inside and out, while the top engine for now is the 140kW version of the VW Group’s 2-litre TSI unit. Other turbopetrol engines include the 1.5 TSI Evo in 96kW and 110kW guises as well as the three-pot 1.0 TSI with 81kW. The two smaller engines are available with mild hybrid technology and, as per the Golf, there’s also a 1.4-litre plug-in-hybrid variant. The diesel flag is flown by two 2-litre TDI models with outputs of 85kW and 110kW.

Seat, the Spanish subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, has lifted the covers off of its all-new Leon, which sources its underpinnings from the eighth-generation Golf. This new C-segment hatch also includes latest-generation hybrid powertrain technologies.

The new design introduces smooth flowing lines with a renewed focus on aerodynamics and an improved drag coefficient, with the new model claimed to be eight percent more slippery than the previous generation. New LED headlamps lend the car a deeper focus. The rear adopts a unique “coast-to-coast” LED design which, together with the spoiler, aims to create a concept of speed.

Of course, we won't see the new Leon in South Africa considering Seat no longer has a presence in this country...

Cupra, Seat's performance sub-brand, has confirmed that the new Leon will be unveiled on February 20th at a dedicated event, ahead of its first public display at the Geneva motor show.

The latest Leon, unveiled late last month, is set to be quickly joined by its hot Cupra-badged variant in showrooms in late summer. As well as a petrol-engine variant, it will also feature a 241bhp plug-in hybrid option.
