ŠKODA has refined the SUPERB's dynamic and elegant design. The carmaker has also upgraded its top model with new technologies and an even more exquisite interior. The full LED Matrix headlights and several new assistance systems are making their debut in a production model from the Czech brand. With a generous amount of interior space and a boot capacity of 625 l in the hatchback and 660 l in the estate, the SUPERB continues to set benchmarks in the segment.

One technological highlight of the updated ŠKODA SUPERB is its full LED Matrix headlights, which are making their debut in a ŠKODA production model. This innovative system generates a light beam consisting of several segments, which it controls individually. This prevents other road users from being dazzled, despite the high beam being on at all times. The intelligent technology uses the camera on the windscreen to detect oncoming traffic as well as people and objects reflecting the light, and a control unit to immediately turn off individual segments of the light beam.

The adaptive, crystalline-effect full LED Matrix headlights bear 'ŠKODA Crystal Lighting' lettering in their housings and offer different lighting modes for different driving situations and weather conditions. These consist of an LED module for the dipped and high beam, three further LED high beam segments, a static LED cornering light, a narrow LED strip providing the indicators, daytime running and position lights, as well as needle-like LED structures used as part of the animated Coming/Leaving Home function. The redesigned fog lights with cornering function also use the four LED light sources. The full LED tail lights come with dynamic rear indicators that illuminate in an outward sweeping motion, not only making the signal even easier to see and more noticeable, but also creating additional dynamics.

Skoda Superb iV

The new ŠKODA SUPERB iV is the brand's first production model to feature plug-in hybrid technology. By combining an efficient petrol engine with an electric motor, it offers particularly eco-friendly mobility without compromising on performance. The battery has a capacity of 37 Ah and 13 kWh of energy: the car's CO2 emissions are less than 40 g/km and the all-electric range is up to 55 km (in the WLTP cycle). The ŠKODA SUPERB iV fulfils the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

The battery can be charged conveniently at home overnight, for example, using a standard plug socket or in 3 hours 30 minutes using a wall box with a charging output of 3.6 kW. The socket for the charging cable is located behind a flap in the radiator grille. The ŠKODA SUPERB iV is also able to recharge or maintain the level of charge in the battery while driving, using its petrol engine and brake energy recovery. This allows drivers to cover a longer journey's 'last mile' - in a city, for example - again without producing any emissions there.

Elegant design and off-road virtues are perfectly combined into one multifunctional and robust lifestyle car - the new SUPERB SCOUT. Standard equipment for the SUPERB SCOUT, which is exclusively available as an allwheeldrive estate, includes rugged body enhancements, 18inch Braga alloy wheels, a RoughRoad package featuring an added 15 mm of ground clearance, and a special SCOUT look in the interior. The new metallic Tangerine Orange finish is also exclusive to the SCOUT.

By launching the ŠKODA SUPERB SCOUT, the Czech brand is adding a new top model to its range of rugged offroad cars. It combines the generous amount of space offered by the elegant ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI with the virtues and flair of an offroad adventurer, yet the length and width remain the same. The ŠKODA SUPERB SCOUT cuts a fine figure offroad thanks to allwheel drive and a RoughRoad package, which comes as standard and provides underbody protection for the engine as well as undercarriage when driving on rougher terrain, and raises the ground clearance by 15 mm. This is supported by an additional OffRoad mode for Driving Mode Select. Dynamic Chassis Control is available as an option.

2019 Skoda Superb revealed with plug-in hybrid option

Czech firm kicks off electrification programme with hybrid version of revamped flagship model

Skoda has revealed the revised version of its flagship Superb saloon and estate, which will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time.

The hybrid will be launched as the Superb iV in recognition of Skoda’s new sub-brand that will be used for its bold electrification plans. The firm launched the Superb alongside the pure-electric Citigo-e at an event in Slovakia.

The Superb iV features a 154bhp, 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine mated to a 114bhp electric motor, which sends drive to the front wheels through a six-speed DSG transmission. The peak system output is 220bhp, with 295lb ft of torque.

The car will be capable of completing 34 miles of pure electric running, identical to the similar Volkswagen Passat GTE. Skoda has yet to release performance figues, but insiders suggest they will closely match the Passat, hinting at a 0-62mph time of around 7.4secs for the saloon.

The battery pack is located under the floor and ahead of the rear axle, which means a slight reduction in boot capacity – 485 litres for the saloon and 510 litres for the estate, compared to 625 and 660 for the non-hybrid versions respectively.

Beyond the well-hidden charging port integrated into the front grille there will be little to give away the PHEV's part-electric status. The infotainment system can display information on battery status and electric range and additional controls for the various powertrain modes. It will also be possible to programme the PHEV's aircon to cool the cabin before the car is needed.

Rugged new Skoda Superb Scout joins facelifted range

Skoda brings 4x4 Scout trim to newly updated Superb, but it's currently not destined for the UK

Skoda has added a new Scout variant to its Superb flagship for the first time, completing the facelifted model’s range revealed earlier today. It’s not coming to the UK, however.

In the traditional Scout format seen across other rugged Skodas, the new Superb variant receives new body enhancements to protect against off-road scuffs and scrapes and a 15mm increase in ride height.

The exterior changes include bespoke front and rear bumpers with aluminium-effect underbody protection and plastic lower cladding along the sills and on the wheel arches. Chrome-plated roof rails and window surrounds also feature, as do aluminium-look door mirrors and new 18in alloy wheels.

As expected, all Superb Scouts come with four-wheel drive, mated to either a 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine or a 2.0-litre petrol unit with 268bhp - the latter being 9bhp down on previous iterations due to a new petrol particulate filter. Both are mated exclusively to a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

Should I buy one?

While Skoda happily admits that the vast majority of Superb buyers come from the fleet world, it also makes a dependable family wagon.

In SE-L spec, the interior is plush and well equipped, and there’s enough space in the second row to ensure that young children won’t come to blows on long journeys. The tallest of adults will fit back there too. And, of course, the boot is massive - regardless of whether you go for the liftback (625 litres) or the estate (660 litres).

There’s little here for the enthusiast to get really excited about, but it’s hard not to respect the Superb for what it does. It’s a comfortable, refined, practical and effortless long-distance machine. If we were staring down the barrel of a 400-mile drive and were told the Superb would be our car, we certainly wouldn’t be too upset.

Should I buy one?

Absolutely. That buyers are turning their backs on cars such as this in favour of (generally speaking) pricier, heavier, less efficient and more dynamically compromised SUVs is a pity, but it now makes cars like the Superb more exclusive and left field.

Putting that to one side, is the Skoda still the best of its breed? A Mazda 6 is a more engaging steer, a Vauxhall Insignia slightly better value for money and a VW Passat that bit more polished. But if you could do a football-game-style pentagram that visualises a player's attributes (if you know, you know), it would be the Superb that best balances affordability, comfort, perceived quality, performance, handling and space. It's also full of Skoda's little practical touches. As a package, it's very hard to argue against.

Should I buy one?

It's hard to argue against the Superb iV. It can save copious amounts of fossil fuel and thus CO2. It's already well proven in body, running gear and powertrain — after all, it’s a Passat GTE underneath — and its frugality should suit a whole new tranche of buyers. The purchase price is well placed on the afforability scale, and when it comes time to sell, well-kept Skodas are good at retaining their value.

Over the decades, Skoda has established itself as a builder of reliable and fundamentally sensible cars. And for families, this new Superb iV looks like being the most sensible of the lot.

Should I buy one?

There's something deeply satisfying about a car that doesn't make anybody but those in the know aware of its performance potential - and this Superb is about as close to absolute subtlety as you can get in 2020.

However, there is a big 'but' that will make its quiet competence seem less enthralling: the fact that this is perilously close to tipping over the £40,000 mark with just a few choice options.

Its performance, exterior style and practicality are comparable with (or better than) the premium establishment, but its image and sense of occasion is lacking at that price. Despite this, and if you can get a good finance deal (or a chunky discount), there's plenty of leftfield appeal for a car that, as ever tougher emissions targets rear their head, probably won't be around for much longer in a form like this.

Should I buy one?

Right now, if it’s the only PHEV saloon in your company car list bracket (and it might well be), you should seriously consider it. With the way that company car tax is changing this April, you could probably at least halve your BIK liability by picking it instead of a conventional petrol or diesel rival.

Meanwhile, if you’re spending your own cash and simply want a big family car that’ll feel familiar and easy to use, won’t cost a packet up front and really will deliver fuel and emissions savings over predominantly short-range trips, it should be equally hard to overlook.

The Superb iV’s sheer unremarkableness is at once its greatest strength and its biggest problem; because it’s tough to really want a car whose main ambition is simply to seem so practical and normal. The thing is, out of a context in which plug-in cars have played every wildcard and joker there is to be played, risking being normal, sensible and relatively well-priced is arguably the boldest option. I wouldn’t be surprised if Skoda ends up being richly rewarded for taking it.

There’s far more to like about the Superb than its limo-like space and accessible prices

For some, an executive car is all about the badge contest in the work car park. But there are those for whom space and value for money are more important, and in both of those departments, nothing can hold a candle to the Skoda Superb, which looks like a bargain used buy.

If ‘value for money’, practicality or indeed the very idea of such a strait-laced saloon as the Superb is enough to send you to sleep, don’t worry because this Czech executive has a firecracker or two up its sleeve.

It sits on a stretched version of the Volkswagen Golf’s underpinnings and comes with a huge range of excellent engines and a choice of six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic (DSG) gearboxes.

The sensible choice is the 1.4 TSI 150, or the 1.5 TSI 150 that replaced it in 2018. Or if you want diesel, the 2.0 TDI 150 promises 55.4mpg.

But you may be swayed by the more explosive 2.0-litre petrol with 217bhp or 276bhp. It’s a quiet, smooth engine, and in 2.0 TSI 280 guise with all-wheel drive and the slick DSG, it will crack 0-62mph in 5.8sec. Go for this and you’re getting a wildly capable car in disguise.
