Subaru of America introduced the all-new seventh-generation 2020 Legacy sedan - the most advanced Subaru Legacy in the model's 30-year history. With standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology as well as available tablet-style high-definition 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK multimedia screen, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System and new XT models with 260 horsepower, the 2020 Legacy offers greater technology, performance, safety and refinement than ever before.

Built on the Subaru Global Platform, which offers increased safety, dynamics and quietness not to mention reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), the Subaru Legacy will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT and Touring XT models when it goes on sale at Subaru retailers this fall. New XT designations mark the return of a turbocharged engine to the Legacy lineup, thanks to a 260-horsepower 2.4-liter direct-injection SUBARU BOXER engine, while other models sport an enhanced 182-horsepower 2.5-liter direct-injection BOXER engine. Every 2020 Legacy features a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), auto stop/start and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with Active Torque Vectoring.

STOUT STRUCTURE AND SAFETY

Introduced for 2017, the Subaru Global Platform has been optimized for the midsize Subaru Legacy, boasting a structure that is 70-percent stiffer in both torsional and front-suspension rigidity and 100-percent stiffer in both front lateral flexural and rear subframe rigidity compared to the previous Legacy's platform. Notable contributors to the increased stiffness include a 13-percent jump in ultra-high-tensile-strength steel, a 371-percent increase in structural adhesive (compared to initial iteration of the Subaru Global Platform) and, for the first time in a Subaru, a floor crossmember that is filled with a highly rigid and lightweight two-part foam material. In another Subaru first, the Legacy utilizes a full inner frame construction in which only the outer panels are welded to the structure after the entire body framework is assembled, unlike a conventional manufacturing process in which the upper and under bodies are assembled separately and then joined. This new inner frame construction is significantly stiffer and lighter than the previous Subaru Legacy's conventional structure.

New Subaru Legacy: seventh-gen sedan brings back turbo

Subaru has revealed its new Legacy at the Chicago Auto Show in the United States, giving the seventh-generation sedan the option of a turbocharged engine for the first time since 2012.

Built on a stiffened version of the latest Subaru Global Platform, the US-spec Legacy will be available in as many as six trim levels, with the flagship variants fitted with a turbocharged 2,4-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine worth 194 kW (at 5 600 r/min) and 376 N.m (between 2 000 and 4 800 r/min). The result, according to Subaru, is a zero to 60 mph (97/ km/h) time of an “estimated 6,1 seconds”.

Other models will employ a “thoroughly revised” version of the brand’s familiar naturally aspirated 2,5-litre, four-cylinder boxer unit, now churning out 136 kW and 239 N.m.

And transmissions? Well, all new Legacy derivatives feature a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, linked to the brand’s signature symmetrical all-wheel drive system. The Japanese firm’s EyeSight driver assistance technology also ships standard, complete with a new lane-centring function that’s active when adaptive cruise control is in use.

Inside the flagship US-spec models, you’ll find a new tablet-like, portrait-oriented 11,6-inch full HD multimedia display, framed by a fresh multilayer instrument panel featuring a soft-touch wrapped surface. Items such as seat heaters and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system will also be available.

A New Turbocharged Boxer Continues the Legacy

A surprise reveal at this week’s Chicago auto show is from Subaru.

As Arctic conditions envelop the northern United States, it made for a poignant environment to reveal new product from the brand which established its reputation by providing honest all-weather motoring solutions.

The car in question is the seventh generation of Subaru’s large sedan, the Legacy, which rides on an all-new platform. Subtle styling hides a structure which is claimed to be 70% stiffer torsionally and 100% more twist resistant around the front axle – hence the promise of superior steering response, compared to the previous Legacy.

Inside, the new sedan’s cabin architecture is dominated by Subaru’s 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, which is vertically orientated - in a manner similar to Volvo’s Sensus system.

Subaru’s all-wheel-drive sedan cars might be niche purchases in a segment dominated by traditional German offerings, but this Legacy is noteworthy for debuting a new engine development – one the brand is desperately in need of.

Powering the new Legacy is a 2.4-litre turbocharged flat-four engine, which boosts 194 kW and 375 Nm. Those are tidy numbers and should offer a vastly improved driving experience, although the only transmission option is a CVT auto. This new 2.4-litre engine is the first turbocharged powerplant offered in Subaru’s Legacy since 2012 and will headline the range, with a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated flat-four powering more affordable models.

As a sedan, you’d expect decent boot-space too and thanks to some slight design revisions, the new Legacy can accommodate 427-litres worth of luggage.

Subaru Legacy sedan quietly leaves SA range, replacement uncertain

Subaru Southern Africa has quietly removed the Legacy from its local line-up, with a decision yet to be taken on whether its replacement will be offered in South Africa.

While the flagship sedan no longer appears on Subaru SA’s website (its removal was “due to low demand”), the company interestingly adds it is still “available on order”.

So if you’re desperate for one and are prepared to wait, technically you still have that option. Although that seems unlikely, considering not a single Legacy was registered in SA in 2019 (as we found out when trawling through Naamsa’s sales statistics).

“The model is available on order should a customer request one, therefore it is still available on order through our dealer network,” a spokesperson for Subaru SA confirmed to CARmag.co.za.

Does that mean the new, seventh-generation Legacy (revealed in February 2019) is on the cards for South Africa? Well, Subaru SA says it’s “still investigating the feasibility of introducing the new model into the South African market”.

Subaru of America, Inc. announced the 2023 Legacy midsize sedan with updated styling and new safety and in-vehicle technologies. Also new, the Sport trim level comes standard with the powerful 2.4-liter turbo SUBARU BOXER® engine. For 2023 model year, Legacy will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring XT trim levels when it arrives in Subaru retailers in fall 2022.

The 2023 Legacy lineup receives a bolder look thanks to a new front fascia incorporating a more prominent grille and redesigned LED headlights. The sedan comes standard with the latest generation of EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology and the enhanced system operates more smoothly and under a greater range of conditions. These improvements are thanks to a wider field of view, updated control software, and the addition of an electric brake booster.

The latest version of the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system comes with wireless Apple CarPlay® and wireless Android™ Auto with full screen display. The updated system now offers improved on-screen controls for audio, HVAC, and vehicle features.

The top-level Touring XT adds a Wide-Angle Mono Camera that works with the dual-camera EyeSight system. The additional camera expands the field of view even further to recognize pedestrians and bicycles sooner when the vehicle enters an intersection at low speed. EyeSight gives an alert to the driver and, when necessary, applies brakes to avoid collisions.
