Cadillac Escalade

Cadillac unveiled the all-new 2021 Escalade, completely redesigned with pioneering technologies that add new dimension to the iconic luxury SUV.

Featuring exclusive, first-to-market technology advances including a curved Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screen, the first AKG automotive audio system and Cadillac's acclaimed Super Cruise driver assistance technology, the fifth-generation of Cadillac's flagship expands on its more than 20 years of segment-defining leadership.

"There is something special about driving an Escalade," said Steve Carlisle, Cadillac president. "It has the bold presence and exclusive technology to elevate the extraordinary and make every drive feel like an occasion."

Launching in the third quarter of 2020 in North America, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade has been completely redesigned to deliver improved driving dynamics and significantly greater passenger and cargo capacities.

"The 2021 Escalade takes its leadership into a new era of mobility, with comprehensive upgrades that are transformative to the driving experience," said Carlisle. "It's more than a new Escalade. It's a new experience."

After being unceremoniously kicked off of the SUV throne with the upcoming electric Hummer, and after at least three leaks, the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is finally out in the open, and it’s a big blocky son of a bitch.

As was clear in the many leaked images of the new Escalade, Cadillac has dialed back a lot of the loud, sharp and angled features of the outgoing model with something that’s simple, softer, and incredibly blocky.

Rappers rejoice – the Escalade has lost none of its presence

Escalade. Just the name has presence these days. It’s a pop-culture icon of course, thanks to multiple appearances in rap videos throughout the noughties, but the sheer size of the thing has also contributed to the aura that surrounds Cadillac’s flagship SUV for us European folk.

And now, unbelievably, it’s even bigger. Yep, this is the new 2021 Escalade – the fifth generation of the monster-SUV – and it is absolutely ginormous. Let’s start with some figures. The standard Escalade is now 5.3m long and over 2m wide. It already has a longer wheelbase than the previous generation, but there’ll be an even longer wheelbase version called the Escalade ESV – that one will be 5.7m long. Five point seven metres.

How else can we convey just how large this thing is? Well, that grille is roughly the size of Berkshire, and the building it’s parked next to is apparently as tall as Buckingham Palace. You’ll get the black mesh grille if you spec the ambitiously-named ‘Sport’ trim and 22-inch wheels are standard across the range.

Cadillac is desperate to get 2020 Escalades off the dealer showroom floor before the all-new 2021 model rolls in. So desperate, in fact, that it sent an email to current Escalade owners offering up to ten grand off if they trade for the merely new instead of the new new. According to CarsDirect that translates to around $19,000 off MSRP when current rebates are considered.

GM had a similar problem with tail end C7 Corvettes, as dealers were forced to stock inventory levels higher than normal in order to secure C8 Corvette allocations. This left plenty of the older models languishing on dealer lots with huge discounts because the American dealership system of distributing cars is truly broken.

The 2021 Escalade is built on a new chassis (shared with the new Tahoe, obviously) and is packed with the tech features many luxury buyers are looking for, like Cadillac’s superb SuperCruise driver assistance package. The visual difference between the two model years is instantly apparent, with the all-new looking more in line with the rest of Cadillac’s lineup. Despite only having been in production since 2015, the current model already looks dated.

From where I sit, I'm seeing Motown's automotive icons making a great comeback.

General Motors in particular. Yes, Ford survived 2020 better than most, with an electric F-150 on the way and an exciting Bronco that everyone loves. But I give GM the edge: In the fourth quarter of 2020 alone, GM beat its own sales estimates with a 4.8% increase in the US.

What's more, the product mix at Detroit's current darling has become astoundingly high-end and interesting (electric Hummer FTW). Sales of the more premium GM vehicles, such as the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon, rose 30% in the fourth quarter, while sales of its more affordable Chevy Equinox dropped 22%, according to GM. On January 5, the company announced that half of its completely redesigned, crown-jewel 2021 Cadillac Escalades had sold for more than $100 000 (R1.53 million) each in the final quarter of the year. That's with a starting price of $76 195 (R1.16m). Talk about signs of life.

I was especially interested to try the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. The redesigned fifth generation of Caddy's first SUV - and the one preferred by everyone from Sylvester Stallone to Killer Mike - is touted in Cadillac advertising and marketing as the ultimate American SUV that consumers can get, at least until the electric version appears in 2025. I had heard the new one was going to be a real behemoth.

We have to review this car, but we don't really remember it well. So here goes nothing.

A classic car-journalist mistake is driving a car and waiting too long to review it. Both my boss Rory and I made this error, and because of it, you, dear readers, will have to slog through this review made up of faint memories of some fancy Cadillac we drove a while ago. Good luck.

“Man, I gotta drive down there and pick up a press car,” my boss messaged me in February. “What? You’re gonna drive nearly four hours to Detroit just to pick up a car?” I responded. “Yes David,” he told me. “I’ve got to do what I’ve got do. It’s for the blogs.”

As someone who has made a living doing dumb things “for the blogs,” I respected Rory’s response, but still found it foolish. To suck up to the boss-man, I hatched a plan that I communicated as me “taking one for the team,” though really I had absolutely nothing going on and just wanted to hang out with Rory and his family. “That’s eight hours of driving to pick it up and then eight hours to drop it off. Look, how about this. If I can somehow fit it into my packed schedule, I guess I’ll pick the Cadillac up and drive up there. But I’m only doing this for you and for the environment. Eight hours of highway driving in that big SUV and its 16 MPG-combined-6.2-liter V8 means lots of CO2, you know. Just know that I’ve got lots of things I’d rather do. I’m busy. Busy I tell you!”
