DS 9

Following DS 7 CROSSBACK and DS 3 CROSSBACK, this is a large, stylish saloon to head up the new French premium brand's line up. With DS 9, DS Automobiles is emphasising its expertise, design, sophistication and technology with a global vision.

With these exciting characteristics, DS 9 conveys a perfect blend of heritage, remarkable savoir-faire and cutting-edge technology. DS 9 is an invitation to rediscover French excellence in relation to the car.

Elegance with a sleek silhouette

With a length of 4.93 metres, width of 1.85 metres and large 690mm diameter wheels/tyres, DS 9 is more striking than other saloons in its class. It uses a new version of the EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform 2) architecture with a longer wheelbase not used with a saloon car before, which greatly benefits the rear passenger space. Its design has a sleek silhouette with a steeply raked rear window, fastback style.

A three-box saloon, DS 9 continues the DS Automobiles design language with an expressive front face featuring the DS WINGS and the parametric design of the grille with its three-dimensional diamond effect giving character. On the bonnet there's a 'Clous de Paris' sabre, the first time this DS interior signature has been used outside the cockpit.

With a nod to the original 1955 DS, DS 9 also has cone shapes at the outside edges of the roof. Inspired by the legendary saloon, the cones have been reformed to house brand new tail lights, signalling DS 9's presence.

New DS 9 saloon takes aim at Audi A4

Range-topping executive set to arrive at Geneva with mix of petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains

DS has revealed a new range-topping executive saloon targeted directly at the Audi A4. The DS 9, set to make its global debut at the Geneva motor show, is based on the PSA Group’s EMP2 platform and closely related to the Peugeot 508.

Codenamed X83, the 9 is the third new-era model for the PSA Group’s premium arm following the 3 Crossback and 7 Crossback SUVs. It will be built exclusively in China, the market expected to take the majority of sales, and exported around the world from there.

The range of powertrains will include three plug-in hybrids. The range-topper is a four-wheel-drive E-Tense model that mixes a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic gearbox to drive the front wheels and uses a further electric motor on the rear axle for a combined 355bhp. This is an uprated version of the 296bhp drivetrain used in the 7 Crossback E-Tense.

A front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid option new to DS is also offered in the 9. This does without the electric motor on the rear axle to offer a combined 222bhp from the engine and electric motor driving the front wheels.

An electric-only range of up to 31 miles is available on this model through the car’s 11.9kWh battery pack. It can be driven on purely electric power at speeds of up to 84mph or left in its standard hybrid mode, which allows the car to decide when best to deploy the electric range. The third plug-in hybrid is a 247bhp version of the front-wheel-drive model. There’s also a 222bhp 1.6-litre petrol model without hybrid assistance, but no diesel will be offered.

The DS 9 saloon is here to prove big French saloons aren't dead

Posh Citroen returns with a hybrid saloon that might burn more money than petrol

The big, luxurious French saloon car. Loved by car enthusiasts, but largely ignored by the buying public. Until they’re on a used car forecourt for a measly couple of grand, that is.

Will the DS 9 join the Citroen C6, Peugeot 605 and Renault Vel Satis* in the annals of flamboyantly depreciating French car history?

It arrives with the same dimensions as a BMW 5 Series or Merc E-Class and prioritising hybrid power. There’ll be three petrol-electric DS 9s offered: 225 and 250bhp versions with front-wheel drive, and a 360bhp range-topper with four-wheel drive. You can expect up to 30 miles on electric alone – helping the DS 9 slink into zero emission zones in cities – with a mix of driving modes to help prioritise how you want to shuffle power around. If you care not for exhaust emissions, there’ll be a solely petrol version using a 225bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder.

As you’d hope, there is much luxury. Heated, cooled and massaging back seats. Much ambient lighting. Something called Art Rubis leather. The option of a 180deg-rotating B.R.M watch atop the dashboard. Which, in time, may be worth more than the car…

Citroën's New DS9 E-Tense Has The Most Important Rear Turn Indicators Of 2020

Citroën’s luxury spin-off brand, DS, is named for the legendary Citroën DS, the Déesse, that futuristic mid-century icon of forward-looking automotive design. The DS series hasn’t generally made direct stylistic references to their original namesake, but the new, just unveiled DS9 E-Tense actually does make one very clear reference, in that most important of details: the rear turn indicators.

This new DS9 E-Tense is quite a handsome and sleek premium car. It’s not really as radical or daring as Citroëns once were, but the car has some nice lines and some interesting detailing, and would certainly be at home next to any Mercedes or BMW premium sedan.

It shares a platform with the China-market long-wheelbase Peugeot 508, and, as you may have guessed by the “E” in the name, it’s a hybrid, with a combined 225 horsepower between gas and electric engines, with a 360 hp option to come.

But that’s not what I want to talk about; I want to talk about the rear turn signals, which are mounted up here on the C-pillars:
