McLaren's new Ultimate Series roadster./

McLaren Elva

McLaren Automotive revealed its new Ultimate Series roadster, the McLaren Elva. As the brand's first open-cockpit road car, the Elva adds a new dimension to the range-topping Ultimate Series lineage. Like its McLaren P1TM, McLaren Senna and Speedtail predecessors, volume of the new McLaren Elva will be strictly limited: just 399 are being offered for customer order.

The Elva name celebrates the renowned Bruce McLaren-designed M1A and McLaren-Elva M1A [Mk I], M1B [Mk II] and M1C [Mk III] of the 1960s. Produced as 'customer' versions of the innovative and exciting Group 7 McLaren race cars, the McLaren-Elva sportscars embodied many of the pioneering design and engineering principles that are integral to the McLaren road cars produced today.

"McLaren continues to push the boundaries of supercar and hypercar development in pursuit of outstanding and unparalleled driving experiences for our customers and the McLaren Elva epitomises that pioneering spirit. The McLaren-Elva M1A [Mk1] and its successors are in many ways the true spiritual forerunners of today's McLarens - superlight, mid-engined cars with the highest levels of performance and dynamic excellence. It's fitting that the new McLaren Ultimate Series roadster - a uniquely modern car that delivers the ultimate connection between driver, car and the elements and with that new heights of driving pleasure on road or track - acknowledges our rich heritage with the Elva name." Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive.

McLaren Elva revealed as 804bhp Ultimate Series roadster

Range-topping V8 two-seater features clever aerodynamics – and no windscreen

McLaren has revealed the Elva, a 804bhp two-seat roadster with no windscreen, as its latest Ultimate Series model.

The new machine, which was first revealed by Autocar in the summer, joins the P1, Senna and Speedtail in the range-topping model line and is limited to 399 examples, priced from £1,425,000 (including UK VAT).

McLaren claims the rear-wheel-drive Elva is the lightest road car it has ever produced. Powered by the firm’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, it is able to reach 62mph in “under three seconds” and has a claimed 0-124mph time of 6.7sec – faster than the track-focused Senna.

The Elva name is taken from the East Sussex constructor whose chassis was used as the basis for McLaren’s M1A, M1B and M1C two-seat sports cars in the 1960s, which serve as spiritual predecessors to the new road car. McLaren has acquired the rights to the Elva name.

804 HP (600 KW) McLaren Elva Joins Ultimate Series Lineup

McLaren Automotive shared a teaser image of their new Speedster joining the Ultimate Series lineup and now we have the official information and photos of their lightest ever road car.

The McLaren Elva joins the Ultimate Series models each of which has been designed with a specific purpose. The Speedtail was designed to cover long distances at substantial speeds and in comfort, the Senna’s aim is to lap race tracks at the fastest speed possible, and the Elva is all about delivering peak driving enjoyment.

The Elva is based on the McLaren-Elva M1A* racing car and it too has no roof, windscreen or side windows. There are, however, a tiny pair of doors to make climbing in and out a little easier. To avoid buffetting at speed, the Elva uses a retractable wind deflector that channels air from the front air dam, through the clamshell bonnet and over the heads of the occupants. But if you prefer having a little extra protection from the elements, McLaren will offer a conventional screen, too.

Powering the Elva is the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 but it has been dialled up** to a stonking 805 hp (600 kW) and 800 Nm of torque. This allows it to sprint to 100 km/h in “less than three seconds” and will beat the Senna to 200 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

With a starting price of £1,425,000 and a 399-unit production limit, the latest McLaren Ultimate Series model’s cost of entry and rarity is as jaw-dropping as its design and performance. Look for deliveries of the Elva to begin near the end of 2020.

New McLaren Elva revealed as 600 kW roadster ... with no windows!

McLaren has whipped the covers off its new Elva, with the new Ultimate Series roadster billed as the brand’s first open-cockpit road car.

Like its P1, Senna and Speedtail that went before it, production of the new Elva will be “strictly limited”, in this case to 399 units.

Where does the Elva name come from? Well, the firm says it serves to celebrate the Bruce McLaren-designed M1A and McLaren-Elva M1A, M1B and M1C of the 1960s.

Described as an “extreme" two-seater with a bespoke carbon-fibre chassis and body but no roof, no windscreen (although the brand says a "fixed-windscreen derivative will be available) and no side windows, the new Elva is powered by a fettled version of the brand's twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8.

Offering 600 kW and 800 N.m to the rear wheels via a seven-speed “seamless-shift” gearbox, the V8 facilitates a zero to 100 km/h sprint in “less than three seconds”, with 200 km/h reached in a claimed 6,7 seconds (that’s quicker than the Senna!). It certainly helps that this is lightest vehicle weight of any road car produced by McLaren Automotive...

R23m, 600kW McLaren Elva is totally exposed to the elements

If you’re looking for an enthralling driving experience that includes full exposure to the elements then McLaren has just the car for you... that’s if you have the equivalent of R23.7 million lying around.

The British sports car specialist has revived the Elva name for its new open-cockpit roadster, which dates back to the 1960s, and thanks to a unique carbon fibre chassis and body, it also happens to be the lightest road car that McLaren has ever made.

But the big point of interest for many will be the truly open air experience - there’s no roof, windows or even a windscreen, although buyers can order the latter as an optional extra.

Engineers have at least tried to mitigate this extreme exposure to the elements, through an Active Air Management system that aims to shelter occupants by manipulating the air flow around them - and this happens without spoiling their connection to the elements, McLaren insists.

But it remains to be seen just how effective all of that is going to be when you flatten the accelerator pedal.

Of interest here is a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces a wholesome 600kW and 800Nm. 100km/h comes up in under three seconds, McLaren claims, while getting to 200km/h takes a mere 6.7 seconds, making it quicker than even the McLaren Senna. And because you’re going to be hearing it in all its glory, engineers have concocted an innovative Iconel and titanium quad-exhaust system that was specifically designed to deliver a unique soundtrack.

McLaren will make just 399 of these at £1 425 000 apiece (which is R23.7 million at today’s exchange rate), although the final price will depend on the level of personalisation that the customer opts for.

How The 804-HP McLaren Elva Will Keep You From Getting Bugs In Your Teeth Without A Windshield

The McLaren Elva might be a hardcore new supercar that can both outrun the McLaren Senna and look a lot better in the process, but it does have one quirk: its lack of a windshield. But don’t fret, because McLaren has a method to keep bugs out of your mouth—aside from pricing it way out of your reach, that is.

That method is called the “McLaren Active Air Management System,” which McLaren mentioned when the car debuted. It’s meant to deflect air around the passenger compartment in order to create what McLaren describes as a “bubble of calm,” which sounds like something we all need in our lives.

Can someone explain why they would pay R23m for a car that they couldn't drive in the rain and which would require removing bugs from their teeth on arrival?

MSO McLaren Elva M1A Theme Looks Tasty

Not much has been said about the roofless, windowless two-seat McLaren called the Elva but now the McLaren Special Operations division is swinging it back onto our radar with this M1A theme.

Bruce McLaren’s superlight M1A was the fastest car on track at the Canadian Sports Car Grand Prix in 1964, repeatedly smashing the lap record at Mosport Park. This is that car reimagined for 2020.

McLaren Elva M6A Theme Honours The Car That Started McLaren’s Orange Obsession

A couple of weeks ago we saw the MSO division from McLaren show off an M1A themed Elva but a new theme from the bespoke division now honours the car that started the obsession with orange for McLaren.

Bruce McLaren’s M6A Can-Am race car of 1967 was the first to feature the all-orange paint scheme and was the car that helped him win his first Can-Am championship that year.
