Citroën's new flagship./

Citroen C5 X

Citroën has unveiled its new C5 X flagship, which adds a new dimension to the large car segment with its bold and original design. An innovative offering in the best Citroën tradition, it combines the elegance and comfort of a saloon with the space and versatility of an estate. Available with both plug-in hybrid and petrol powertrains, C5 X exceeds the high expectations for customers in both the large car and SUV segments.

New C5 X breaks new ground with the World Premiere introduction of the Citroën Advanced Comfort active suspension system, which goes one step further to deliver the brand's famed 'magic carpet' ride comfort. Inside, its lounge-like interior space, the sumptuousness of its Advanced Comfort seats and the meticulous detailed finish make the all-new C5 X a pleasure to travel in, while the 545 litre capacity boot offers all the space of a traditional estate car. The feeling of serenity on board is further enhanced by the plug-in hybrid version, which brings in the brand's ë-Comfort element, with near-silent driving in electric mode.

This feeling of well-being is also increased by the use of advanced technologies that help make driving simpler and less stressful. Tech includes the Extended Head Up Display, as well as a range of driving assistance features, such as Highway Driver Assist. Furthermore, there's a new infotainment interface that features a large central 12" high definition touch screen, natural voice recognition and a customisable display with widgets, just like on a tablet.

New 2021 Citroen C5X revealed as luxury range-topper

Segment-straddling flagship combines SUV, estate and saloon styles and will offer PHEV power from launch

Citroën is hoping to “breathe more life” into the large car market with the C5X, the French manufacturer’s unconventional new flagship model.

With a silhouette that draws on SUV, estate and saloon car styling cues, the C5X straddles several core market segments.

It is set to hit the UK early next year with a choice of pure-petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains, while prioritising long-distance refinement and ushering in a raft of features and systems new to the brand.

The model’s ‘X’ suffix refers to its market positioning at “the crossroad of customers’ needs”, according to Citroën, and it offers the raised ride height of an SUV, the extended rear cabin of an estate car and the “elegance” of a saloon.

Certain styling cues – most notably the LED headlight design – are inspired by the radical CXperience concept, which was shown in 2016 and with which the C5X also shares its so-called ‘Advanced Comfort’ design ethos.

Citroen C5 X revealed as sedan, wagon and SUV fusion

There’s an automotive bout going on at the moment. More tradition petrolheads have been rather upset about how SUVs are threatening the livelihood of sedans and, more so, station wagons in the new car market. Citroen’s latest reveal, the C5 X, aims to satisfy all of the respective parties by putting together a car that represents all three body shapes.

The C5 X has been penned to display the elegance of a saloon, the dynamism of a station wagon and the elevated stance of an SUV. The new offering will be available as petrol-fueled or a 165 kW plug-in hybrid electric with a claimed EV range of 50 km and electric top speed of 135 km/h. It will also introduce the brand’s “Advanced Comfort” active hydraulic suspension which aims to give the impression of travelling on a magic carpet.

Complementing this is the C5 X’s lounge-like interior room with comfort seats, generous rear leg-room and 545 dm3 of boot space which expands to 1 640 dm3 when the seats are folded. A 360 degree glass area within the cabin improves the sense of space from within. Further innovations in the cabin include an extended heads-up display, digital gauges and a new customisable 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system with natural voice recognition.

The Citroën C5 X Is What We Deserve

In America, if you want to buy a big bland crossover, you have lots of options, from the Toyota Highlander to the Chevy Blazer. In Europe, your options are slightly more limited, as until fairly recently Europeans liked cars to be smaller. Sadly, this has been changing.

For example, take a look at Citroën’s new flagship, the C5 X, which was unveiled Monday. It is perfectly fine, and it is also an admission that the European market is almost as SUV-mad as we are. This is what they deserve, if everyone is going to keep buying every SUV in sight, as depressing as that is.

There is a gas version of this car and there is also a plug-in hybrid version of this car, the latter probably not as good as it is made out to be. Citroën is going for a one-size-fits-all kind of approach, combining elements of a station wagon, sedan and SUV. The result is a car that certainly looks unique:

Citroën can be applauded for knowing what it is good at, which is not power or looks but comfort and usability. It compares the ride of the C5 X to that of riding a “magic carpet.”

Autocar confidential: ICE still part of the plan for Skoda, Citroen on diesel and more

Our reporters empty their notebooks to round up a week in gossip from across the automotive industry

In this week's round-up of automotive gossip, Skoda explains why its EV expansion won't come ahead of combustion engines while customers still want them, Citroen's dim view on diesel, Goodwood's post-pandemic plans and more.

Diesel is done, as far as Citroen is concerned

Citroen CEO Vincent Cobée believes the new C5X will set a trend in being sold with petrol and petrol-electric hybrid powertrains exclusively. “I’m extremely cold-blooded on diesel,” he said. “It was 80% of the segment five years ago and less than 50% last year; it could be less than 15% in three or four years.”

New 2022 Citroen C5X goes on sale in the UK from £26,490

Segment-straddling flagship combines SUV, estate and saloon styles and offers PHEV power from launch

Citroën’s segment-straddling new C5 X flagship is now available to order in the UK, priced from £26,490 and with a choice of petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Riding high but eschewing traditional SUV design cues for a saloon-aping silhouette and the claimed “versatility and practicality of a station wagon”, the C5 X majors on long-distance refinement and is expected to tempt buyers away from more conventional models in other segments. Some 25% of buyers are expected to switch from an estate car, while 21% will come from saloon models and 15% from small SUVs.

From launch, it will be offered with a choice of either 1.2- or 1.6-litre petrol engines producing 128bhp and 178bhp respectively, or a plug-in hybrid system – familiar from that used by the Citroën C5 Aircross – which produces 222bhp.

The C5 X Hybrid, available from £35,190, is equipped with a 12.4kWh battery pack good for a claimed 34 miles in EV mode. The 109bhp electric motor can also be used in tandem with the petrol unit for maximum output in Sport mode.

Citroen C5 X review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“When you look at what people might own – a big estate or crossover most likely – the C5 X is fine value”

Just because there's nothing like it doesn't mean it has no rivals. When you look at what people might own – a budget-brand big estate, or a mid-size crossover most likely – the C5 X is fine value. Always a good start.

It's also a very pleasant thing to sit in, to ride in and – more of a surprise this – to drive. It doesn't feel like a re-dressed Peugeot 508 either. It has a definite character of its own.

Despite TG’s best efforts over the years to point out that crossovers aren't great to drive, they keep taking over the family-car world. That very dominance is making them even more boring. The C5 X is a better-driving more interesting alternative.

Citroen C5 X PHEV review

The big issue for us was whether Citroën was over-egging the pudding by claiming a close relationship for the C5 X with those sainted, sophisticated, chevron-wearing saloons of yesteryear. But the relationship seems real. By comparison with its predecessors, the C5 X is conventional indeed, but it genuinely does have a decent helping of their style, comfort and cruising ability. And it brings something new to a crowded market.
