New Ferrari 296 GTB: 819bhp PHEV brings back V6 power

Latest mid-engined model swaps V8 for Maranello's first road-going six-cylinder engine since 1974

Ferrari has unwrapped the new 296 GTB as the latest entry into its Berlinetta sports car family, with an all-new hybridised V6 engine arriving in place of the traditional mid-mounted V8.

The new model arrives to complement the F8 Tributo, which will leave production in 2022 once all customer cars have been delivered. This makes the 296 GTB Ferrari's first 'mainstream' electrified offering, after the LaFerrari and SF90 Stradale halo hybrid hypercars.

Its numerical designation is a reference to its 2996cc six-cylinder engine, while the Gran Turismo Berlinetta moniker establishes it as the latest in a long line of Ferrari sports cars that stretches back to the mid-1950s.

Ferrari's switch from V8 to V6 power for its core sports car line mirrors that of rival McLaren earlier this year, with the Artura V6 plug-in hybrid arriving to replace the Sports Series model family.

First examples will be delivered in European markets beginning in Q1 2022, with prices in Italy starting from €269,000 (£231,000) in Italy, or €302,000 (£259,000) with the track-focused Assetto Fiorano package.

Powertrain

The V6 engine at the heart of the plug-in hybrid powertrain is described as the first "six-cylinder engine installed on a road car sporting the prancing horse badge". Maranello used a V6 for entry-level sports cars during the 1960s and 1970s, but these were marketed as part of its dedicated and now long-defunct Dino brand.

The 296 GTB's twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre unit – an all-new and bespoke powerplant developed in-house by Ferrari – produces 654bhp, which is equivalent to 218bhp per litre - said to be a record for a production car.

In a first for Ferrari, the turbochargers, which can spin up to 180,000rpm, sit between the cylinder banks – a layout chosen for its more compact packaging, lower centre of gravity and reduced engine mass.

The aluminium block's wide-angle 120deg configuration also means the turbos can sit centrally, shortening the distance to the combustion chamber for maximum intake efficiency.

Despite its forced aspiration and relatively small size, the new V6 is claimed to emit "the harmony of the high-frequency notes of a naturally aspirated V12", as used by Ferrari's top-rung GT models.

Ferrari 296 GTB unveiled with all-new 610 kW V6 hybrid powertrain

The Ferrari 296 GTB has been revealed as the brand’s first V6-powered supercar with hybrid power. Astute Ferrari fans will note that the Dino 206/246-range was never quite acknowledged by the brand, making this the first Ferrari to be powered by six-cylinders. Although boasting a smaller engine, the new model will, in-fact, be positioned on the higher-end of the brand’s current offering.

Located at the centre of the chassis, the Ferrari 296 GTB houses a twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 with a single electric motor mounted to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Working together, the engine and motor produces 610 kW and 740 N.m of torque exclusively to the rear wheels.

As per the brand’s claims, the Ferrari 296 GTB will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2,9 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7,3 seconds until it reaches a top speed of over 330 km/h. Compared to the V8-powered F8 Tributo, it boasts the same 0-100 km/h time and a half-a-second improvement over 0-200 km/h time but a slightly lower top speed.

The engine found here is sourced from the Ferrari SF90 and makes use of an all-new pair of IHI turbochargers that bring air into the 120-degree chambers at up to 180 000 r/min via a hot-V layout. Without assistance from the electric motor, this engine will produce 487 kW and 8 000 r/min thanks to a notably high 9,4:1 compression ratio, aluminium alloy block and 350-bar fuel injection system.

After years of rumours and speculation, Ferrari has finally unveiled the V-6-powered replacement to its mid-engine F8 Tributo supercar.

Dubbed the 296 GTB, the car uses an all-new 120-degree twin-turbo V-6 paired with hybrid assistance, making a total of 818 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque. There's also a totally new design scheme and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels.

This is the future of Ferrari.

The name 296 GTB was conceived using a combination of the car's total displacement (2992 cc) and its cylinder count. The GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) acronym is meant to "underscore this new engine’s epoch-changing importance to Maranello," according to Ferrari.

The 654-horsepower engine, according to the company, sports the highest specific output of any production motor.

Virtually every part has been developed from a clean sheet to push the power levels even farther than the twin-turbo V-8 units found on cars such as the SF90 Stradale and the F8 Tributo.

There's a new aluminium block and aluminium heads, as well as a 5000-psi injector system to optimize the fuel-to-air mixture inside the cylinder. The IHI turbochargers, nestled between the wide "vee" of the V-6, have also been redesigned, and can now spin at a maximum of 180,000 rpm.

 
Ferrari 296 GTB Revealed With 818 Hp (610 KW) Plug-In Hybrid V6

The six-cylinder Ferrari has returned but it is not the new Dino. Instead, the new sports car from Maranello gets its name from the engine’s displacement (2.9 litres) and the number of cylinders (six), plus the GTB suffix representing Gran Turismo Berlinetta.

One would think the Ferrari 296 GTB is a downgrade considering it packs two fewer cylinders than the F8 Tributo but you would be mistaken once you get on to the output of the plug-in hybrid system.

The 2.992cc V6 is an all-new development and is their first engine to have the turbochargers installed inside the vee to provide better packaging while shaving off weight and lowering the centre of gravity. The package delivers a potent 218 hp per litre which Ferrari claims is a new specific power output record for a road-going production car.

The internal combustion engine can deliver 654 hp (488 kW) and with the help of an electric motor, the 296 GTB can deliver a whopping 818 hp (610 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to this, the new prancing horse will rocket off the line to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds (matching the F8) and hit 200 km/h in 7.3 seconds (0.5s quicker than F8). Hold your foot down and you will do more than 205 mph (330 km/h).

The power is sent through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission the same one from the SF90. The 296 GTB is fitted with a 7.45-kWh battery mounted under the floor, providing enough juice for a limited electric range of 25 km (16 miles).

Did you know that Leonardo da Vinci once designed an automated robot knight – a sort of Renaissance RoboCop? Well, he did. And yet even the Italian master with all his boundless ingenuity and skill would have been bamboozled by the witchcraft present in this new Ferrari supercar.

Because this new Ferrari supercar ushers in a new, turbocharged, hybrid V6. Welcome to the Ferrari Renaissance. Welcome to the brand-new Ferrari 296 GTB.

“Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master,” Leo once remarked, and a cursory glance through Maranello’s mid-rear-engined V8 history provides affirmation. Only… the new 296 doesn’t just surpass the F8, it matches the V12 Competizione. You’re looking at the thick, scary end of 819bhp (830CV) from a 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 and electric motor.

When spooled up, both units send that mammoth power output to the rear wheels to record a 0-62mph time of 2.9s, a 0-124mph time of 7.3s, top speed of over 205mph, and a Fiorano lap time of 1m 21s; that latter number matches up to the Ferrari F12tdf.

Of course, it’s not the first Ferrari V6; that honour rests with 1957’s Dino 156. But that car – and its V6 successors – were all racers. The 296 is the first production road car to feature this configuration; a clean-sheet design especially for this car, producing 654bhp on its own. Ferrari claims it sets the new specific power output record for a production road car.

Both the block and the cylinder heads are made from aluminium, and the combustion chambers feature tech introduced on the SF90. The two turbos are constructed of higher performance alloys compared to those on the F8, and sit inside the ‘vee’ of the six. Both spin to 180,000rpm. Ferrari has managed to reduce the rotating masses (down 11 per cent compared to the V8’s turbos) which in turn has bettered the spool up time. Bottom line: it’ll shoot when you point.

 
NEW MODEL: Meet the mind-blowing V6 twin-turbo (part-electric) Ferrari 296 GTB

The 296 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta), the latest evolution of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined two-seater coupé, was shown for the first time yesterday in production-ready form during an online event broadcast on Ferrari’s social media and web channels. Ferrari says the petrol-electric 296 GTB redefines the concept of fun behind the wheel, guaranteeing pure emotions not just when pushing the car to its limits, but also in day-to-day driving situations.

The 296 GTB ushers in a revolution for Ferrari as it introduces a new engine type to flank the marque’s multi-award-winning 8- and 12-cylinder power units: a new 488kW 120° V6 coupled with an electric motor capable of delivering a further 122kW. You can drive the car for 25km in full electric mode, but what you really want is to dial it up into Qualify mode to unleash the full 610kW potential of the propulsion unit.

What I find most interesting about the engine’s packaging (besides its excessive power figures) is the crankshaft that is made from nitrided steel (a surface hardening process where atomic nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a ferrous alloy).

For Ferrari’s engineers to ensure it maintains its 120° crank angle under high load, after the initial forging of the rough ingot, the crankshaft is twisted and then subject to deep nitriding heat treatments (to guarantee resistance to high loads), machining and balancing.

The firing order of the new V6 (1-6-3-4-2-5) is the result of the crankshaft’s journal geometry. 100% of the rotating masses and 25% of the alternating masses are balanced, and therefore its level of balance allows loads on the bushings to be reduced without increasing the weight of the engine. It truly is a work of art.

Agree! the 458 is the nicest "ferrari" in a long time. I feel ferrari lost its way. yes its good looking, but its a wierd mix of american and generic car design student thesis. F40, Testerossa, F355, 458... all have unique ferarri personality. Lambo always look outrageously lambo. Even Ford GT looks unique. Porsche, obviously porsche...

Ferrari flipped the script with the unveiling of its latest sports car. Called the 296 GTB, the car is the next chapter in the Prancing Horse's history as it is the first mid-rear-engined two-seater to be powered by a six-cylinder petrol engine. Yes, a six-cylinder!

The engine supplements the familiar V8 and V12 engines in Ferrari's arsenal, yet promises to bestow the familiar Ferrari performance we've come to expect from the Italian automaker. The car's name, which combines its total displacement (2992cc) and the number of cylinders, was chosen, with the GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) acronym in fine Ferrari tradition to underscore this new engine.

What sets the 296 GTB further apart is that the internal combustion engine is coupled with an electric motor that adds an additional 122kW to the total system output. The car can also drive on electric power alone, delivering up to 25km of electric-only range in eDrive mode.

 
And with this, the continuous explosion in price of the previous V8 models.
 
New Ferrari 296 GTB: 819bhp PHEV to gain convertible option

Maranello gears up to extend its open-roof line-up with a new version of its V6 hybrid

Hot on the heels of the new Ferrari 296 GTB will be a drop-top variant, which has been spotted on public roads for the first time.

The prototype snapped by our photographers wears characteristically heavy camouflage, but it's clear that the open-roof 296 will be nearly identical to the already-revealed coupé when its roof is closed.

In keeping with Ferrari nomenclature tradition, it will likely be called the 296 GTS, arriving to join the Portofino M, F8 Spider, 812 GTS and SF90 Spider as the newest and final member of Maranello's convertible line-up. It's not anticipated that the new Roma coupé will gain a convertible option, given its close mechanical relationship to the Portofino.

The 296 GTB draws heavily on styling cues taken from the SF90 Stradale flagship, and as such the convertible version looks to use a similar roof-opening set-up to the SF90 Spider.

The roof itself is likely to be made of aluminium to save weight and space and could be retracted in as little as 14sec. Like the SF90 Spider, the 296 GTS is expected to feature a small rear screen that can be raised or lowered on demand.
