Hyundai Staria

Hyundai Motor Company unveiled additional design features of its new multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) lineup, STARIA, ahead of its digital world premiere slated for the first half of 2021.

Designed for both families and businesses, STARIA provides next-level mobility solutions that make time in transit more accommodating, productive and worthwhile. Moreover, STARIA provides a preview of the space innovation that will be available through Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs) in the future mobility era.

STARIA's overall look is based on an 'inside-out' approach, a new design methodology for future mobility that begins the design process with the interior and expands it to the exterior. This reflects Hyundai's response to recent shifts in consumer needs that prioritize the use of interior space.

New Hyundai Staria fully revealed as H-1's 'space-age' replacement!​

Hyundai has fully revealed its new Staria people-mover, which is expected to replace the H-1 in some markets.

Earlier in March 2021, the Korean firm released rather revealing teaser images of the newcomer. Now, however, the covers have come off completely, though the automaker has yet to release powertrain details.


Hyundai says the new Staria has been designed “for both families and businesses”. The company describes the exterior styling as “futuristic”, featuring a “streamlined silhouette” and a “space-age appearance”.

The front end employs a horizontally positioned daytime running light that stretches across the width of the vehicle above the wide grille and low-set headlamps. Round back, you’ll find vertically sited taillamps, while the rear bumper has been positioned low down to allow easy loading and unloading of cargo.

Hyundai Staria: more details on the upcoming futuristic MPV emerge

Hyundai has fully revealed its ‘spaceship-inspired’ Staria MPV, dropping additional information and giving us a closer look at the interior and exterior.

Set to go on sale in select markets during the second half of 2021, where it is expected to replace the H-1, the Staria aims to redefine the people-moving segment with its futuristic styling and “cruise ship-inspired” cabin.

The vehicle will be available in a variety of variants that offer numerous seating formats, although the 11-seat flagship Staria Premium model will be available in South Korea only.

The Staria’s overall height of 1 990 mm has been optimised to allow an average school child to stand upright and move with ease, while the 3 273 mm wheelbase makes for “class leading” rear legroom, Hyundai says. Commercial variants, meanwhile, offer nearly 5 000 dm3 worth of packing space and the ability to carry three Euro pallets at once.

Depending on the market, the MPV will be offered with a choice of two engines, these being the familiar 2,2-litre turbodiesel that produces 130 kW and 431 N.m of torque, and a naturally aspirated 3,5-litre V6 petrol that’s good for 200 kW and 331 N.m. The diesel, of course, would be the most likely candidate if the Staria were ever to be offered in South Africa.

Hyundai Staria Confirmed for South Africa

Hyundai has shared more details about its all-new Staria MPV and confirmed the model's introduction to South Africa.

Hyundai joins other car brands who have shifted their business focus from car maker to smart mobility solution provider, and the Staria is the first model that will come from its future purpose-built vehicles (PBVs).

Using this platform, the Hyundai Staria is available 2- to 11-seat configurations and in two variants: Staria and Staria Premium. The premium model makes no secret it wants a slice of the lucrative luxury bus segment and we expect it to rival the Volkswagen Caravelle and Mercedes-Benz V-Class.

When it comes to South Africa, the Hyundai Staria will be powered by a 2.2-litre VGT turbodiesel engine, which also powers the updated Hyundai Santa Fe, due to be launched in April 2021. Outputs could be around the 149 kW and 441 Nm mark, and the vehicle will have an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

When is the Hyundai Staria coming to South Africa?

Hyundai South Africa is aiming for a local launch of the Staria towards the end of 2021. "We are examining all configurations of the Staria – from the luxury 7-seater to the panel van version – to determine what the range in South Africa will consist of. With the luxury derivative, Hyundai will enter a segment for multi-purpose vehicles in the country where the brand did not compete before,” says Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director of Hyundai Automotive SA. “Further good news is that we shall still have a large people-carrier to offer in the range as a replacement for the popular H-1 9-seater bus that has served many families and businesses well over the years.”

Hyundai Staria Load revealed as futuristic panel van for businesses

The commercial trim Hyundai Staria Load has been revealed by the South Korean’s Australian division for private businesses. Based on the production model revealed not too long ago, the new panel van is available with generous packaging and standard features.

The Hyundai Staria Load benefits from improved cabin packaging as well as a number of advanced safety and convenience features. With the cabin gutted out, the new model can accommodate three 1 200 mm x 800 mm Euro pallets thanks to its total utility space of 4 935-litres. Ease of access is provided by a 573 mm load height and 870 mm sliding door opening width.

As standard, the Hyundai Staria Load is fitted with seven airbags, an electronic brake, rear cross traffic, forward and blind spot collision avoidance, multi-collision braking, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and vehicle departure alert.

The Hyundai Staria Load is powered by the brand’s turbodiesel 2,2-litre four-cylinder engine which delivers 130 kW and 430 N.m of torque to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission which gives it a braked towing capacity of 2 500 kg. The brand claims that an average fuel economy of 7,0 L/100 km can be achieved.

For the sake of comfort and convenience, the Hyundai Staria Load comes standard with a 4,2-inch supervision instrument cluster, an 8,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with multi-Bluetooth connection and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionalities. This is complemented by a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob, black cloth seats, dashboard storage trays, front roof trays and a wireless smartphone charger.

The replacement for the Hyundai H1 van has been announced and it looks futuristic and unusual. Meet the Hyundai Staria Load van!

The Hyundai Staria was unveiled in early 2021 and everyone was stunned by its futuristic looks. The best part was Hyundai South Africa confirming the passenger Staria was confirmed for local introduction by the end of 2021, so we’re keeping tabs on its local debut.

Now on the commercial side of things, the Staria Load has been revealed, switching from its people-carrying role to cargo. Despite its futuristic looks, this is the production vehicle and Hyundai Australia is already taking orders for it.

The Hyundai Staria Load is available in two configurations: a 2-seater van or a 5-seater crew van with customers being able to choose a standard hatchback-style tailgate or the traditional twin doors. Being a commercial van, colour choice is not a priority and there’s just silver or white on offer.

As far as engines go, the Hyundai Staria Load is available with the tried-and-tested 2.2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 130 kW and 430 Nm on tap. This shove goes to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Hyundai Staria SA Intro?

Hyundai South Africa has confirmed the people-carrying Staria will be touching down in SA before the end of 2021, with estimations of a November introduction. At this point, we expect the Korean giant to offer this commercial Staria too if its past strategy with the H1 is anything to go by.
