All-new Jeep Commander revealed as seven-seater Compass alternative

The all-new Jeep Commander has been revealed as a revival of a moniker that was discontinued in 2010. Like its predecessor, the new model is a seven-seater SUV alternative to the Compass that aims to appease lifestyle-minded consumers with a need for generous packaging.

The Jeep Commander will be available in Limited and Overland trims with the choice of a 4×2 turbopetrol and 4×4 turbodiesel engine. For the petrol derivative, a turbocharged 1,3-litre four-cylinder mill is applied with a power output of 136 kW and 270 N.m of torque while the oil-burner employs a 2,0-litre four-cylinder block that delivers 125 kW and 380 N.m. The petrol model makes use of the brand’s six-speed automatic transmission while the diesel, a nine-speed.

Size-wise, the Jeep Commander measures 4 769 mm long with a width of 1 859 mm and height of 1 682 mm. This houses a wheelbase of 2 794 mm while accommodating an approach angle of 20,5 degrees, departure angle of 22,8 degrees and break-over angel of 21,3 degrees.

Within the cabin of the Jeep Commander, packaging is claimed to be rather generous with the American brand boasting a claimed utility capacity of 1 760 dm3. With the third row of seats folded, 233 dm3 of space will be available and with all seats in use, just 31 dm3 is supplied.

Key pieces of equipment for the cabin includes a conclusive 10,25 fully digital instrument cluster and 10,1-inch full HD touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and a Harmon Kardon sound system, wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play, wireless smartphone charging and USB charging points all throughout the cabin.

Jeep Commander three-row SUV officially revealed

Jeep has finally revealed the Commander three-row SUV, internally known as Jeep Low-D, which will be sold in India as the Jeep Meridian. The model will first go on sale in Brazil, followed by an India launch sometime in mid-2022.
  • Styling inspired by larger SUVs from Jeep’s portfolio
  • Gets more features than Compass
  • Will come to India with a 2.0-litre diesel engine
Jeep Commander (Meridian): what's new?

The Commander has been spied testing in India and Brazil many times in the last year. Official images confirm that the three-row Jeep Commander gets quite a few unique bits to differentiate itself from the two-row Compass SUV on which it is based on. The Commander will be produced at the Jeep plant in Goiana, Brazil, that also builds the Compass, Renegade and the Fiat Toro - all these SUVs share the same platform as the Commander. Right-hand drive versions will be built at the Ranjangaon plant in India, that also builds the Compass, and exported globally.

Jeep Commander (Meridian): what’s different from Compass?

At first glance, the Commander does look like a longer Compass, but a closer look shows the difference in design details. The Commander actually shares quite a bit of its styling with the larger Grand Cherokee L. Some design details that link back to the Compass include the front grille with the top section folded backwards, and the familiar chrome detailing along the upper edges of the windows. The rectangular full-LED headlamp and slim tail-lamps are designs seen on Jeep’s new-generation Grand Cherokee, with the window-line also similar to newer Jeep models. Upfront, the bumper design too is unique to the Commander, with large faux vents featuring LED Daytime Running Lamps and fog lamps, with a chrome strip running across the fascia.

As far as dimensions go, the Commander is 4,769mm long, 1,859mm wide and 1,682mm high, which makes it 364mm longer, 41mm wider and 42mm higher than the Compass. The Commander has a wheelbase of 2,794mm, which is again 158mm longer than the Compass.

The added length is evident when viewed from the sides with the rear doors and quarter windows being larger than the Compass. Apart from the long wheelbase, the rear overhang also seems longer. The Commander's tailgate is more upright and gets a premium look when viewed from the rear three quarters, which is especially similar to other Jeep models like the new flagship Wagoneer SUV. The slim LED tail-lights joined by a chrome strip round off the looks.

Jeep Commander (Meridian): interior similar to Compass

On the inside, the dashboard design is mostly identical to the Compass, but a closer look shows new metal inserts and a suede fabric trim on the dashboard and door panels. The front seats too look straight out of the Compass, although they are wrapped in brown leather upholstery with embroidered suede details. An interesting design touch is the words ‘Jeep 1941’ embossed on the front centre armrest. The rose gold accents on the center console also look particularly nice.

Just like the updated Compass in India, the Commander also gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, while the central infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is 10.1-inch. Other features include electrically adjustable driver and passenger seats, wireless phone charger, connected car features, Alexa virtual assistant, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, electronic trunk and more. Safety features include seven airbags, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking system, lane keep assist and more.

The most important highlight of the Commander is obviously its third row of seats. The second-row seats split 60:40 to allow access to the third row. Third-row passengers will also have amenities such as blower speed adjustments and USB charging ports.

2022 Jeep Meridian Review - Team-BHP

Jeep Meridian Pros

• Handsome unmistakably-Jeep styling & loads of character
• Robust build quality. Feels very solid, just as a Jeep should
• Classy cabin now boasts a versatile 5+2 seating configuration and better accommodation when compared to the Compass
• Competent 2.0L diesel. Good driveability in the city, quick on the open road
• Mature suspension setup, nicely-tuned EPS & rock-solid stability
• Capable AWD available, with 214 mm of ground clearance
• Feature packed: electric front seats (driver memory), panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, powered tailgate, LED projector headlights…
• Topnotch safety kit: Strong all-disc brakes, a plethora of electronic aids & 6 airbags
• Diesel AT now available without the AWD as well, thereby making it more accessible for urban dwellers (Compass Diesel AT only available with AWD, 5-lakhs more OTR)

Jeep Meridian Cons

• Cabin has limited width, can feel snug for larger passengers. 5th passenger (in the 2nd row) will feel unwelcome
• 3rd row is strictly for children and small adults
• Should’ve had more power for the price. Same 2.0L diesel available in SUVs from a segment below
• No petrol engine in a market that is moving to petrols in a big way. Delhiites will be disappointed
• 9-speed Automatic gearbox is competent, but not brilliant
• We’d have liked to see front parking sensors, paddle shifters, gearbox ‘sport’ mode, a sliding middle row, more connected tech features (it’s very basic currently)
• At low speeds, the firm ride quality always keeps you aware of the road quality you’re driving on

• Jeep India’s dealer & service network coverage is still limited
• Just the higher Limited & Limited (O) variants at launch. Not sure when lesser variants will follow
