Lexus' first bespoke EV has been teased. Out in 2022./

New 2022 Lexus RZ is electric SUV with performance focus

Brand's first bespoke electric car gets a new name as it's confirmed for a 2022 launch

The first bespoke Lexus electric car, arriving in the first half of 2022, will be a sleek, performance-oriented SUV called the RZ.

Officially previewed as part of the Toyota and Lexus annual Kenshiki forum, it is based on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform but with bespoke modifications aimed at taking “the driving experience to the next level”.

The brand’s Europe vice president, Pascal Ruch, told Autocar that a priority for Lexus is offering “exhilarating driving performance” and hinted that it will offer variants of future EVs that “support the sporty position of the brand”. The RZ will have fully variable four-wheel drive and steer-by-wire technology, and promises "incredible cornering and roadholding".

Bespoke modifications – including "lighter and more compact motors", increased body rigidity and Lexus's own Direct4 fully variable four-wheel-drive technology – are aimed at providing "an engaging and rewarding on-road driving experience".

The Direct4 system allows the RZ to apportion power delivery across both axles "in the blink of an eye", essentially switching instantly between front-, rear- and all-wheel drive as the situation requires. Lexus will employ this set-up on all future bespoke EVs, suggesting each will use a twin-motor set-up.

All-new Lexus RZ EV crossover officially teased as bespoke product

The luxury arm of Toyota is officially taking its first step into the world of electrification with a new new Lexus RZ EV crossover. The new teaser displays the distinctive design cues of the upcoming product.

At the front, we get to see the the new Lexus RZ EV crossover will maintain the spindle grille design with the angular LED headlamps housing a Z-shaped cue atop a faux-air intake. At the rear, the manufacturer has decided to opt for the LED light bar to run across the hatch. The rear also integrates a mild ducktail spoiler.

New 2022 Lexus RZ shown ahead of imminent official reveal

New photos give us our best look yet at the Japanese luxury brand's first bespoke electric car

The first bespoke Lexus electric car, arriving in the first half of 2022, will be a sleek, performance-oriented SUV called the RZ.

Already previewed in near-production-ready form when Toyota and Lexus unwrapped 15 all-new electric concept cars late last year, it's based on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform but with bespoke modifications aimed at taking “the driving experience to the next level”. It's a similar size – and is a close visual relation – to the existing NX crossover.

New photos released as part of Lexus's 2021 global sales data give us a clear view of the RZ. The design is unchanged from the concept shown back in December, featuring an overall look similar to the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X with which it shares its platform, although a black C-pillar helps to create a more streamlined look.

Like its Toyota and Subaru siblings, it sits closer to the ground than a traditional SUV. It also carries forward a number of new design cues seen for the first time on that concept.

The electric Lexus RZ will look like this

Coming in the spring, the Lexus RZ is the brand’s first attempt at a ground-up EV

This, ladies and gents, is what the new Lexus RZ electric SUV will look like when it’s revealed in full in the next couple of months. It’s… not bad, is it?

Not by SUV standards anyway. The notches down the side of the no-longer-a-grille give it a bit of edge, and there are plenty of interesting creases throughout the design to help stand out from the bulging crowd. Let’s hope it isn’t blandified before it goes on sale.

When it’s launched the RZ will be the first EV with a Lexus badge that’s been purpose built with electricity in mind. The UX300e, you’ll remember, was constructed around architecture originally designed for internal combustion.

This time the RX will sit on top of Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, which means it’s a sibling vehicle to the forthcoming bZ4X and Subaru Solterra.

Toyota’s effort is getting a 71kWh battery and 280 miles of range: front-wheel drive models produce 201bhp for 0-62mph in 8.4secs, while dual-motor, all-wheel drive variants manage 214bhp and shave 0.7secs off the headline sprint.

Lexus previews RZ 450e all-electric SUV

Toyota global president Akio Toyoda has said that Lexus will sell only electric vehicles by 2035 and the brand is expected to launch its first standalone battery-electric vehicle – the RZ 450e – soon. This week, the Japanese premium marque released new images of the upcoming model.

In December last year, we reported that Toyoda-san announced no fewer than 16 new battery-electric vehicles – of which four were Lexus models – at the brand’s Megaweb showcase in Tokyo. While the Aichi-based giant has certainly been at the forefront of petrol-electric hybrid technology for decades, many of Toyota’s European, South Korean, Chinese and North American rival manufacturers have been quicker to introduce (adapted and standalone) battery-electric vehicles, especially in the luxury-car space. Lexus has clearly got some catching up to do…

Well, this week Lexus International President Koji Sato said: “In 2022, we will release a series of new models, starting with the BEV-exclusive model RZ in (the Northern Hemisphere) spring.”

That means we’ll get to see the full reveal of the RZ 450e during the second quarter of the year, with international sales to begin too soon thereafter (although it’s not on the cards for Mzansi yet).

New 2022 Lexus RZ450e to be fully revealed on 20 April

Luxury brand to give full details of its first bespoke electric car, which will rival the Audi Q4 E-tron

The first bespoke Lexus electric car, to be officially revealed and detailed on 20 april, will be a sleek, performance-oriented SUV called the RZ450e.

Lexus Teases New EV That Comes With A Goddamn Yoke

The new Lexus RZ 450e will come with a Tesla-style yoke, and I just want to know why

I’m sure you guys are all familiar with the phrase “don’t reinvent the wheel.” Well it seems the chief makers of wheels – auto manufacturers – aren’t. First it was Tesla with the yoke, now it’s... Lexus? That’s right: Good ol’ conservative hasn’t-changed-ots-infotainment-in-like-eight-years Lexus has decided that what its next car needs is a ****ing yoke.

Toyota announced that the new RZ 450e will be revealed on Wednesday 4/20 (blaze it) at 6 a.m. It’ll be twins with Toyota’s new EV, the BZ4X. which is also twins with the new Subaru Solterra. So, I guess they’re triplets. Whatever. None of this matters because the RZ has a ****ing yoke.

There may be some hope yet, however. According to The Verge, the new BZ4X (terrible name) will come standard with a regular steering wheel, but can be optioned with a y*ke. That means there is certainly a possibility that RZ 450e owners won’t get stuck with half a wheel.

Looks like Lexus’s new EV will have a yoke

The production version of the RZ 450e looks set to get yoke steering

Uh oh, looks like Lexus agrees with Tesla on something. Teaser shots showing the “production model” of the new RZ 450e have surfaced, and yes, that is a yoke steering setup. What is the automotive world coming to?

Lexus will fully reveal the electric RZ in a couple of weeks time, but of course we’ve already seen the intended design and we’ve had the full lowdown on its sister cars – the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra.

In concept form the Toyota arrived with a similar-looking yoke to the one Lexus seems to have run with (see below), and it looks like the mooted, futuristic steer-by-wire system could actually make it into production.

Lexus show off its RZ 450e EV, coming on April 20

Lexus will officially announce its first fully-electric car on April 20. It will be called RZ 450e and Lexus showed off the car in a series of press photos, revealing a very traditional Lexus styling with sharp headlights and sporty lines.

The Lexus RZ 450e will likely be a revamped Toyota bZ4X, and as such it will share the 71.4 kWh battery and possibly the drivetrain.

The bZ4X brings a combined 160kW (218hp) output paired to either a single electric motor on the front or two motors for all-wheel drive. It reaches 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.

Lexus shared an image of the RZ 450e's interior and it sports a yoke steering wheel. This design was brought back to popularity by Tesla in the Model S and Model X, but it's also an available option for the Toyota bZ4X. But where Tesla uses a conventional 14.0:1 steering ratio, Toyota uses a drive-by-wire system with a lock-to-lock radius of 150 degrees - alleviating the need to adjust your grip.

This Is The Lexus RZ 450e Before You're Supposed To See It

The Lexus RZ 450e won't officially debut for another week

The Lexus RZ 450e is still a week away from its official debut, but it looks like there was a leak in Japan that gave a first peek at the vehicle well before we’re supposed to see it.

These photos are courtesy of RZ Forums, the site that first published the photos back in February:

The RZ 450e is an all-electric SUV that serves as the luxurious sibling of the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra. All three vehicles are built on the same platform, so all three share the same battery underpinnings and the same controversial styling cues. The Lexus, though, adds a massive hourglass-shaped pseudo-grille — though to be honest, I kind of like it. It’s not something we’ve ever really seen before in the automotive sector, and I’m willing to commend some leaps of faith.

Lexus RZ 450e official images leak in Japan

In a second major leak in a row the Lexus RZ450e follows the BMW i7 - the two EVs appearing ahead of their April 20 announcements. The photos we have are courtesy of RZForums and they look like TV screenshots from Discovery channel - did Lexus Japan jump the gun and run the adverts early?

What we can see is what we were expecting, there are no surprises here. RZ450e is a twin of the Toyota bZ4x, but with a few unmistakably Lexus touches - the lights and the grille make sure we can never think it’s anything else. What we don’t see here is the interior but the photos released earlier already cleared that mystery and we expect luxury at its best from Lexus.

Since Lexus, Toyota and Subaru share the same platform we can expect the same battery - 71.4kWh. The power in the Toyota is 218hp, but we hope Lexus will up the game and bring more impressive numbers. Toyota has so far skipped the controversial yoke steering wheel but Lexus may try bringing it to the market if only as an option.

New Lexus RZ 450e launches firm's EV push with 309bhp, 4WD

Lexus's striking first bespoke EV covers 0-62mph in 5.6sec and majors on distinct dynamics

The new Lexus RZ 450e is the Japanese marque’s first bespoke electric car, serving as the spearhead for the firm’s new range of premium and dynamically oriented EVs.

Due in the UK at the end of 2022, it is a similar size to the best-selling Lexus NX, but bosses are keen to emphasise that it is not intended as an electric successor to – or replacement for – that car, which only recently entered its second generation and gained a plug-in hybrid option.

It will no doubt command a premium over its combustion-fuelled NX sibling, but Lexus’s Europe boss, Spiros Fotinos, would only go so far as to confirm the brand is considering the cost of “other BEV relevant vehicles” in this segment when determining pricing.

It is based on the same e-TNGA EV architecture as the new Toyota bZ4X SUV and the closely related Subaru Solterra but places a more overt emphasiAttach filess on premium appeal and performance – giving clues as to how Lexus EVs will be marked out from other vehicles that share their architecture.

The overall look of the new SUV also gives a strong indication of Lexus's design vision for an all-electric future. Links to its current models are evident in its silhouette and defining cues, but many elements have been reimagined to mark this out as the first in a new line of products. Lexus previously gave a glimpse of this new EV family late last year, showing new concepts for a large SUV, saloon and supercar alongside the RZ 450e.
