Mazda's new rugged 4x4 crossover for Murica./

New Mazda CX-50 is rugged 4x4 crossover for America

Mazda kickstarts its SUV offensive with an all-wheel-drive rival for the Subaru Forester

Mazda has revealed the new CX-50 as the first of five new SUVs due in the coming years, aiming it squarely at customers with "active and outdoor lifesyles".

Developed especially for the US market, the CX-50 will be built at Mazda and Toyota's shared Huntsville, Alabama factory from January 2022. It is the first model to wear the CX-50 nameplate, slotting into Mazda's line-up between the CX-30 and CX-5.

The CX-50 gets four-wheel drive as standard for "greater confidence on- and off-road", with Mazda's new Intelligent Drive Select function (Mi-Drive) providing a variety of drive modes for tackling a range of different terrains and conditions. Mazda claims it will drive "naturally" both on challenging terrain and while towing.

It will be offered from launch with a choice of either turbocharged or naturally aspirated versions of Mazda's 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, both paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, while electrified options - including a full hybrid - will be launched at a later date.

Mazda has previously confirmed it will introduce plug-in hybrid technology to its line-up with the Europe-bound CX-60 and CX-80, but has given no indication that this US-only model will be available as a PHEV. The CX-50 will soon be joined by the larger CX-70 and CX-90, which will be among the first models to use the Japanese brand's new six-cylinder petrol engines.

Design-wise, the CX-50's relationship with the 3, CX-30 and MX-30 – each inspired by the radical Vision Coupé concept from 2017 – is clear. The brand's 'Kodo' design ethos extends to narrow LED headlights, an expansive chrome-surround grille and a long, sloping bonnet. The contrasting body cladding - a nod to its off-road aspirations - draw a link to the MX-30 EV.

Mazda CX-50

Mazda North American Operations hosted the virtual world premiere of the first-ever Mazda CX-50. A completely new model, CX-50 is the first Mazda vehicle to be built at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) plant in Huntsville, Alabama, with production beginning in January 2022.

"This new Mazda vehicle has been developed for North America, particularly to support the active and outdoor lifestyles of customers in this region," Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations said. "The CX-50 encourages people to immerse themselves in nature without compromising on the premium design and outstanding on-road performance Mazda is known for."

As a new addition to the Mazda lineup, CX-50 maintains key attributes expected of all Mazda vehicles, including superior driving dynamics and beautiful design. In addition, Mazda has extended this vehicle's capability to enable drivers to venture further into the outdoors and various terrains.

The first-ever CX-50 emphasizes Mazda's trademark natural driving experience to help create greater confidence on and off-road. Enhancing this experience, it will be equipped as standard with the latest i-Activ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) technology and new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, or Mi-Drive. The new drive modes can be selected with the Mi-Drive switch and will help the crossover SUV drive naturally in a wide variety of conditions, such as in exciting off-road terrain or providing reliable towing capabilities. At launch, CX-50 will be available with Mazda's efficient powertrains, Skyactiv-G 2.5 naturally aspirated engine or Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine and paired with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission. In the coming years, the CX-50 will also be offered with electrified powertrains, including a traditional hybrid model. More information about our electrified models will be shared at a later date.

Mazda Is Entering The Off-Road World With The CX-50 And It Looks Badass

"Off-road" crossovers are hot right now, and Mazda is getting in on the fun.

Subaru has its Wilderness line, Toyota has a RAV4 TRD Off-Road, Ford has a Bronco Sport built on its Escape platform — it’s clear that small, off-road-ish SUVs are hot right now, and Mazda wants in on the fun with the 2023 Mazda CX-50. Here’s what we know so far about this badass-looking crossover.

I realize that calling a crossover with mild off-road capabilities “badass” may seem a bit odd, especially from a diehard off-roader like me. But I’m talking about looks here, because let’s be honest, that’s why people buy these vehicles anyway — it’s all about image. And this Mazda CX-50 looks incredible.

The fact is, Mazda’s styling is already on-point. The CX-5, which, as far as I can tell, is the vehicle closest in size to this upcoming CX-50, is a beauty. So it should be no surprise that taking that styling as a basis and off-road-ifying it yields a thing of beauty.

Mazda has followed the same formula that everyone else is using: throw some black plastic cladding on the bottoms of the doors and on the wheel arches, jack up the ground clearance a bit, throw some chunky tires on some aggressive looking black wheels, trim the front and rear facias a bit (and add either a silver skid plate or silver trim that looks like a skid plate), and install some matte black graphics on the hood.

Mazda CX-50 breaks cover as more dynamic SUV offering

The Mazda CX-50 has been revealed as the second product that forms part of the Japanese manufacturer’s aggressive SUV strategy. This particular model will be exclusive to the US market only, but previews what to expect from the next three models that have been planned.

The Mazda CX-50 has been described to blend Kodo design’s elegance and quality with the power and sturdy functionality expected of an SUV. The new crossover boasts an outdoor-capable presence that respectfully interacts with the surroundings.

The brand says that the Mazda CX-50 has been given a ground clearance that provides a sense of security when driving off-road. The model also claims to offer an ideal vehicle height and length for easily loading and securing common outdoor equipment, user-friendly boot space and a panoramic sunroof, all for customers to enjoy the great outdoors even more.

Mazda unveils boldly styled CX-50

The new CX-50 crossover was designed with the North American market in mind and will be produced in Mazda’s new factory in Alabama, so it probably won’t come to Mzansi. Nonetheless, the newcomer is the first of 5 new CX models that will be launched in the next 12 months, so it’s a preview of what’s to come…

Said to be a “completely new model”, the CX-50 should slot in just above its popular, but long-serving, CX-5 family car sibling in Mazda’s line-up (that’s if the newcomer will be positioned as the Mazda3-based CX-30 is in relation to the CX-3, for example). It’s difficult to say, because the CX-3 and CX-30 are not based on the same platform and it’s difficult to imagine that Mazda would retain the outgoing CX-5’s KF platform for the “all-new model”. Mazda says the current CX-5 will ultimately be replaced, so the CX-50 might be offered as a standalone product first and a complementary model after that.

What’s most surprising about the CX-50 is its off-road-oriented packaging. Mazda says it has “extended this vehicle’s capability to enable drivers to venture further into the outdoors and various terrains”. As such, all CX-50s are equipped with all-wheel drive (i-Activ) as well as Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive). The latter enables drivers to select from various drive modes to tailor the new Mazda’s powertrain settings to suit a variety of conditions, such as “off-road terrain or providing reliable towing capabilities”.

This is a rather bold move on the part of Mazda, which has equipped its all-wheel-drive crossovers and SUVs with (some) added ground clearance and functions that utilise the vehicles’ electronic stability control software to assist in mild off-road conditions, but, with the exception of the BT-50 double cab, the Japanese brand has not drawn attention to its models’ outright off-road abilities and packaging.

Mazda CX-50 revealed as first of a new generation of SUVs

The first-ever Mazda CX-50 has been revealed as a brand new model for the North American market.
At this stage there don’t appear to be any plans to offer it outside of that region, however it is the first of a new generation of Mazda SUVs that will be available across the globe, meaning much of the design flavour that you see here will likely be evident in the other new models.

According to Mazda South Africa, the upcoming CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 are all under consideration for the local market (read more about them here), and it is expected that they will be based around the company’s new rear-wheel drive, longitudinal-engine platform.

The Mazda CX-50, on the other hand, is said to share its front-wheel drive architecture with the current Mazda CX-30. According to Mazda, it is the first of its products to be built at a new Alabama assembly plant that is shared with Toyota, however it doesn’t appear to share any technology with the latter.

The Mazda CX-50 will be available with just two engines initially, taking the form of a normally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol unit and a turbocharged version, with both linked to a six-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ all-wheel drive system as standard. The latter is linked to a selection of Mi-Drive modes that assist the vehicle in a wide variety of conditions.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Will Start At Just Over $28,000

Mazda’s newest crossover starts $900 more than its CX-5 brother.

The outdoorsy crossover push continues. Mazda has finally released pricing and trim details of its newest crossover, the CX-50 — and with a starting price of $28,025, it’s cheaper than I thought it would be.

Before I get into the details, a brief note on the pricing. That $28,025 (and all the other pricing listed here) includes the $1,225 destination charge. Mazda says the starting price is $26,800, but that’s just a marketing gimmick — a way to make the vehicle seem cheaper than it is. The destination charge isn’t optional, so I’m including it.

The CX-50 will be available with two engines. Buyers will get to choose between either the base 2.5-liter 187 horsepower I4 or the 2.5-liter turbo with 256 horsepower (that drops to 227 horses if you use 87 octane fuel). Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic and standard AWD. Of course, with the off-road nature of the CX-50, there are selectable drive modes Mazda calls Mi-Drive. Depending on the package you choose, you’ll be able to choose between Sport, Offroad, and Towing modes. Mazda says the CX-50 can tow up to 3,5000 pounds with certain packages.

Speaking of the packages, there are nine. The base naturally aspirated engine makes up six of the packages:

The New Mazda CX-50 Is About As Good As Midsized CUVs Get

Mazda wanted to make a crossover that can hold its own when you turn off the beaten path, and they did a great job of it

Final Verdict

When it comes down to it, the Mazda CX-50 is a real quality vehicle. It’s a CUV I would honestly recommend to anyone in the market for on. It’s fun enough, capable enough, and good-looking enough to make anyone’s list.
