As has been the case in recent years, another leak precedes a global BMW release. The 2023 BMW X1 and iX1 unveil was scheduled for June 1 in Europe (May 31, 6PM EST in the United States), but a set of official images found their way on social media channels. This particular Instagram account showcases both the gasoline-powered X1 and the first-ever iX1 electric crossover. Full details are still under embargo, but we can share what’s being shown in this leak.

First and foremost, the design of the BMW X1 and iX1 is quite attractive. It features the lines of a smaller X3 crossover, but with a redesigned front-end and new headlights. The M Sport Package is also quite aggressive in looks, featuring large air intakes and plenty of dynamic shapes. The kidneys are also larger than on the outgoing model with enlarged outer edges, and with a shark-like nose. The headlights feature upside-down corona lights which give the car a very modern look.

The side view also reveals a very sport and dynamic stance with interesting creases and lines running across which certainly bring out the sportiness of this X1 and iX1. The rear-end stands out with a coupe-like roofline, featuring a large roof spoiler. The taillights also display a new interpretation of the BMW L-shaped lights. Both models are pipeless, so it’s likely that only the rumored BMW X1 M35i will get typical exhaust pipes.

BMW iX1 leaks on the eve of its debut

BMW is set to unveil the X1 and the electrified iX1 on June 1, and in keeping with tradition, the pair has leaked online. The leak uncovers many key details as well as some of the specs.

The BMW iX1 takes many design cues from its larger stablemate, the iX3. It features large, chrome-laden kidney grilles, an aggressive, shark-like nose front, LED headlights and taillights, and a low, dynamic stance.

Inside, the BMW iX1 features a curved driver's display, divided into a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a 10.7-inch main control display. The system is powered by BMW's iDrive 8. There's a wireless charging tray for your phone as well.

Interestingly, there's no knob for the iDrive system but instead a small gear shifter.

The most compact SUV in the Bavarian range has been leaked ahead of its international launch. There aren’t too many surprises expected with the 2023 BMW X1 and iX1 based on the various spy shots we have seen and the model has dodged the enlarged kidney grilles.

The front grilles are more enlarged than before but still less imposing from other models in the BMW lineup. A few specifications have also been leaked including that the iX1 will be able to make use of an AC plug for charging with up to 11 kW however an optional accessory allows it to charge up to 22 kW. Still meagre numbers when compared to the 130 kW capabilities of a direct current unit. This translates into 120 km of range after just 10 minutes of charging while up to 80% battery life can be achieved in only 29 minutes.

To help aid in its 438 km claimed range, the two-electric motor iX1 also boasts a low drag coefficient of 0,26 which is impressive for an SUV in this category. This is while being able to produce a maximum of 230 kW for a short burst of time while 200 kW is available in normal driving conditions.

2022 BMW X1 brings new look and 272-mile electric variant

Third-generation SUV revealed with petrol, PHEV and electric powertrain options

The new third-generation BMW X1 crossover has been revealed, following the BMW 4 Series, BMW X3 and the BMW 7 Series in gaining an electric variant for the first time.

BMW’s crucial rival to the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 is its first “premium compact model based on a flexible vehicle architecture to feature an all-electric drive system”. It effectively replaces the decade-old BMW i3 as the entry point into the manufacturer's growing EV family.

The architecture in question is the FAAR, which underpins the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer MPV and will soon appear in the next-generation Mini Countrymancrossover.

In the new iX1 xDrive30 EV, it houses a dual-motor powertrain (one on each axle) producing a combined 309bhp and 364lb ft, making it good for 0-62mph in 5.7sec – figures that line it up as a close rival to the four-wheel-drive version of the Kia EV6.

Meanwhile, a 64.7kWh (usable) battery under the floor provides a claimed range of between 257 and 272 miles and can be charged at rates of up to 130kW for a 10-80% top-up time of 29 minutes.

The iX1 will follow shortly after a range of pure-ICE X1 models, which are due on sale from October.

BMW premiers iX1 xDrive30 with 438km range, 313hp and AWD

BMW's all-electric iX1 is official as part of the all-new X1 lineup, which also features ICE and plug-in-hybrid versions.

The new iX1 comes in a single xDrive30 configuration with two electric motors - one for each axle - but there will also be a front-wheel-drive variant in the future.

The BMW iX1 xDrive30 has a 64.7kWh usable battery capacity that delivers a WLTP range of up to 438km. Its dual motors produce a combined output of 230kW (313hp) and 494nm (364 lb-ft) of torque letting the iX1 sprint from 0 to 100km in 5.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 180km/h (112mph).

DC charging is up to 130kW and the car can go from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes, or add 120km in just 10 minutes on the charger. For at-home AC charging the iX1 supports 11kW that can top up the 64.7kWh battery in six and a half hours or an optional 22kW that cuts that time to just below four hours. Naturally, there's a heat pump to improve efficiency.

The new X1 and by extension, the iX1, is a bit shorter than its predecessor, but is more expansive and brings 45l of extra trunk space. There's no frunk, though.

Meet the brand-new 2023 BMW X1. It has changed considerably and is confirmed for an SA market introduction before the end of 2022.

The BMW X1 is the entry-point into the Bavarian brand’s range of SUVs, but this all-new model can no longer be considered compact.

The 2023 BMW X1 is 43 mm longer, 22.9 mm wider and 43 mm taller. The wheelbase has grown by 22.9 mm and the track width increased by 20.3 mm. This means that while the vehicle has grown in size, cabin space has increased too.

Visually, it’s not as bold-looking as some of the other recent BMW products, but that’s understandable as the X1/X3/X5 are part of BMW’s more traditional and conservative client base. There are some new bold colours on offer, like the Utah Orange you see here and customers can spec wheels up to 20-inch in size. Standard units are 18-inch.

Where once we had the futuristic, revolutionary i3, we now have the BMW iX1. Yep, BMW is continuing with its plans to seemingly offer an all-electric version of every car it currently builds, the latest being its teeniest posh crossover. The words ‘selling’ and ‘hot cakes’ immediately come to mind.

The iX1 xDrive30 will launch later this year with a twin electric motor setup to provide four-wheel drive and up to 309bhp. It’ll be fairly rapid too, with 364lb ft of torque and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. We don’t have that many details on the floor-mounted battery as of yet, but BMW says range will be between 257 and 272 miles.

The iX1 launches alongside the new third-generation X1, which BMW says will kick off with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines (although they may not all come to the UK) before a pair of plug-in hybrids and two mild-hybrids arrive later along the line. All ICE versions will use a seven-speed auto gearbox and there’ll be a choice of front- or four-wheel drive.

We’ve already had some early details of the all-new BMW X1, which is bigger than ever and will be coming to SA before the end of 2022. If you’re fed up with the ever-increasing prices of fuel, an electric derivative has been confirmed too.

This is the all-electric BMW iX1 and will be sold in one derivative; xDrive30. It’s the brand’s first all-wheel drive EV to compete in this growing premium compact segment.

Under the skin, the all-electric BMW iX1 features two electric motors that produce 230 kW and 494 Nm. It should be quite brisk, with a claimed 0-100 kph of just 5.7 seconds and it’ll run to a top speed of 180 kph. There’s a 64.7 kWh battery pack located on the vehicle’s floor and the all-electric BMW iX1 supports 130 kW DC fast charging.

The all-new iX1 will be touching down in the first quarter of 2023, with the standard BMW X1 arriving in the fourth quarter of 2022. We’ll have pricing and specification details then.

Don't care about the electric thing, but the grey M Sport looks fantastic.

This mk3 is the first really convincing looking X1. I always thought the predecessors were slightly insipid mumsy things, more MPV than SUV. Pity the top model will be a 35, a 40i would have been sensational.

Also noticed no iDrive controller as with some of the recent full electric junk - that's a fail.

The third-generation BMW X1 has been revealed, and to keep with the electrified times it now has a fully-electric sibling called the iX1.

Both are bound for South Africa, with regular BMW X1 models due in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the iX1 scheduled for the third quarter of 2023. Pricing will be confirmed closer to launch, but with the BMW i3 being discontinued soon the iX1 will inevitably become BMW SA’s most affordable EV product.

The iX1 will only be offered in xDrive30 form at launch, with a two-motor all-wheel drive system delivering a combined 230kW and 494Nm to all four wheels, and allowing a (claimed) 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds.

BMW estimates a range of between 413 and 438km between charges.

As for the internal combustion versions, it appears South Africa will get two front-wheel drive options at launch. These are the sDrive18i that’s powered by a three-cylinder turbopetrol with 115kW on tap, and a four-cylinder turbodiesel sDrive18d model that’s good for 110kW. Both feature 48V mild hybrid technology, with a small electric motor integrated into the seven-speed automatic gearbox.
