The all new 6th Gen Espace has been shown./

Renault Espace

In 1983, Renault unveiled the vehicle that can fittingly be called the first car for life and living, the Renault Espace. It was pioneering, often imitated, never equalled and has earned iconic status over five generations.

Renault is now unveiling the All-new Espace, the new people carrier seating 5 or 7, which will join the line-up leading the brand's charge in the C and D segments.

The Espace started a revolution, ushered in a vision of the future and has never stopped changing with the times. Today's the All-new Renault Espace has an SUV vibe and athletic and elegant design, and the Esprit Alpine trim adds a motorsports edge. It has remained true to its 5- or 7-seater long-distance people-carrier DNA and is still the Renault range's most spacious model. And that's where it shines! The choice of sophisticated materials and finishing touches add class to the top-of-the-range and bright interior thanks to a 1-sqm-plus sunroof, one of the largest on the market.

The All-new Espace is also up-to-the-minute and brimming with advanced technology in the sitting area and under the bonnet. It has all the connectivity its driver and passengers need and keeps their environmental footprint in check. Its outer dimensions are smaller and it is 215 kg lighter than its predecessor, and it comes with an ultraefficient 200 hp E-Tech full hybrid powertrain. Its benchmarked low fuel consumption (4.6 litres per 100 km) gives it up to 1,100 km of range and the battery don't need any charge.

Renault Espace reinvented as downsized three-row SUV

With a history stretching back to 1983, the Renault Espace was one of the pioneers of the large MPV space.

But even this nameplate is succumbing to SUV fever, with the reveal of the latest generation model. It takes the form of a more compact seven-seat SUV, essentially a stretched version of the Tiguan-rivalling Austral, which has replaced the Kadjar in Europe.

This means the new Renault Espace, which traditionally competed with products like the Chrysler Voyager, is now similar in concept to the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. Renault says its repositioning is in tune with the times to make it “better meet the needs of today’s customers.”

Although it’s smaller than its MPV predecessors, allowing it to shed 215kg in the process, the new Espace is still the most spacious Renault on offer, and customers will get to choose between five-seat and seven-seat configurations, although judging by the pictures, the latter’s third row is likely best suited to children.

Based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s new CMF-CD platform, the new Espace is available with four-wheel steering, and a hybrid powertrain that pairs a 1.2-litre turbopetrol engine with an electric motor for a system output of 146kW.

Renault Espace returns as extended, seven-seat Austral

New Nissan X-Trail rival is available with five or seven seats – but isn’t coming to the UK

The Renault Espace has returned as an extended version of the new Austral SUV, offering a more spacious interior that's available with five or seven seats.

The extra interior room is thanks to a raised and stretched rear deck, with the Espace measuring in at 4.72 metres long – 0.21m more than the Austral.

In five-seat configuration, this gives the Espace 777 litres of boot space. With the third row of seats in place and upright, this shrinks to 159 litres – smaller than the seven-seat Skoda Kodiaq’s 270 litres. With the third row folded down, 677 litres of space is available.

Powering the new Espace is the 197bhp hybrid powertrain from the Austral, with a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and a small battery. This yields fuel efficiency of 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 104g/km, matching its capabilities in the smaller car.

Cheaper (but less powerful) mild-hybrid engines – producing 138bhp and 157bhp in the Austral – are also expected to be available in the Espace.

This is the new Renault Espace, and of course it’s now an SUV

Former MPV transforms into the only car anybody wants these days

Renault has revealed the new Espace; formerly a hugely practical and versatile MPV, now… yet another SUV. While Renault proudly trumpets that it “retains the DNA of the five previous generations”, it’s also… yet another SUV.

So, it’s spun off the same base that includes such hits as the Renault Austral and Nissan Qashqai, and is available in either five- or seven-seat guise. Indeed it’s Renault’s longest car on offer today – a stretched Austral, then. We’re told that it’s also longer on the inside, lower, as well as being a handy 215kg lighter than its immediate predecessor.

UK buyers won’t be treated to the delights of the new Espace SUV and its (optional) huge sunroof, but elsewhere it’ll be offered with Renault’s 197bhp hybrid E-Tech drivetrain. That pairs a 1.2-litre three-pot turbo petrol engine with a pair of electric motors, and the ‘Iconic’ and ‘Esprit Alpine’ trims come with Renault’s rear-wheel-steer (dubbed ‘4Control’).

Many driving modes – encompassing hybrid and full EV, as well as brake regen – are all available, as is a range of driver assistance technology. Things like a 360-degree surround monitor, traffic sign recognition, lane centring and so on.

First drive: 2023 Renault Espace

Absent from the UK since 2012, the Espace lives on elsewhere. Here's what we're missing from the all-new one

So should we be longing for the Espace in the UK? The seven-seat SUV market isn’t the largest and is already well served by established players like the Skoda Kodiaq and X-Trail, with exciting new additions such as the EV9 to come. It’s hard to think of what the Espace offers that these don’t.

It’s the classic case of solid yet unspectacular, exactly the kind of cycle Renault wants to break out of with the new era of electric cars being created under its inspired CEO, Luca de Meo. We’ll leave this one for now but excitedly await what the Espace may yet become in the future.
