You buy a Rolls Royce to be seen in. You want to be snapped heading to swanky parties and flamboyant awards ceremonies. Heck, you might even be some high-flying CEO that wants to assert their dominance by rocking up to the office in a pristine Roller. And the company knows this. It knows that any new car it makes must be able to navigate commutes or frequent journeys to fancy events.

It’s because of this that the firm puts a great deal of effort into testing to ensure that these new cars can last their predicted lifetime. And that includes its new electric vehicle, the Rolls Royce Spectre.

First unveiled in 2021, the Rolls Royce Spectre will be the brand’s first production electric vehicle, after an experimental electric Phantom concept it debuted in 2011.

The new car is currently a quarter of the way through its testing program, and Rolls Royce hopes the new EV will be ready to hit the streets in 2023.

Autocar gets exclusive access to luxury firm’s first EV ahead of 2023 launch

The Rolls-Royce Spectre will be positioned as the spiritual successor to the Phantom coupé in the luxury marque’s range when the new electric model goes on sale at the end of 2023.

The engineering parameters for the Spectre are now being set as the Goodwood firm begins the almost two-year testing programme, which Autocar has been granted unprecedented early access to as the car undergoes winter testing near the Arctic Circle at the start of its development.

This included an early ride in a development mule, just the sixth Spectre development car to have been created.

Rolls-Royce Spectre will be the reincarnation of the Phantom

Despite only first testing mules being built, Rolls-Royce is already taking orders for the Spectre - full blood EV to be introduced towards the end of 2023. This “RollsRoyce 3.0” has some serious shoes to fill and comes with already mind-boggling numbers attached to it - 7km of cables running across the car, one thousand (!!!) high-level functions with 25,000 sub-functions and 141,200 send-receive functions with tolerance of 25 milliseconds. All that to achieve perfect performance, luxury and silence.

The testing has begun, it will take 2 years, 2.5 million kilometers and 30 prototype vehicles, it will take the new Rolls-Royce from Arctic Circle to Dubai and all possible environments along the way. When all the tests are completed and the engineers signed off on all of the tiniest of the details - we will have the newest Spectre ready to step into the light.

It will be positioned to replace the Wraith coupe and Dawn convertible since RR is no longer taking orders for those, despite being larger at over 5 meters in length. It will sit comfortably just under the Phantom that was last seen in 2016 and it will most likely fill that gap with customers snapping up pre orders like hot buns.

Rolls-Royce Spectre EV enters vital testing phase in France

Testing on Riviera will help develop the electric luxury coupé's credentials for everyday driving

The Rolls-Royce Spectre has entered a pivotal phase of its testing programme in the French Riviera ahead of the electric coupé's launch towards the end of 2023.

Following months of tests in testing in extreme conditions just 55km (34 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, the Spectre will now be driven for a total of 625,000km (388,357 miles) on the Côte d’Azur.

It will be split into two parts, with tests taking place at the Autodrome de Miramas proving ground and the surrounding countryside.

The development in France will involve fine-tuning of a new electronic roll-stabilisation suspension system, which Rolls-Royce says will afford the brand's characteristic ‘magic carpet ride’ quality.

Rolls-Royce is in France to test the high-tech suspension on its first ever electric car, the Spectre.

Like every other car maker, Rolls-Royce is going electric. By 2030, the firm says it’ll be a fully electric car maker, and is now preparing to launch its first EV. Coming next year, the Spectre is now undergoing an impressive array of tests to put the electric car through its paces.

After running the Spectre EV close to the Arctic Circle to test it in extreme temperatures, Rolls-Royce has now headed to a setting more appropriate for the car’s life on the road: the French riviera.

The move is all part of its aim to cover more than 1.5 million miles to test the car in a variety of settings. In France, the Spectre EV will run on the Autodrome de Miramas facility, which previously held the French Grand Prix way back in 1926. The car will also cover the roads around the Côte d’Azur.

First photos of 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre’s interior emerge

Rolls-Royce Spectre is arguably the most important model for the luxury brand, it starts a completely new chapter in its history and the company is not taking it lightly. The pre-production vehicles are being put through their paces across the world in some of the harshest climates to make sure once the car reaches customers, it is the best they can get.

The Spectre was recently seen testing in the south of France, which is actually its natural habitat with Rolls-Royce customers treating the French Riviera as their native land.

The car we have here, was spotted in Spain just as it was leaving the area of Observatorio de Sierra Nevada, well known for some of the most picturesque roads in Europe. Thanks to super quick photographers from Carscoops we have the very first shots of Spectre’s interior.

There is no revolution on the inside, the interior looks traditional with the classic Rolls-Royce setup - round air vents in the center console, traditional RR steering wheel. The dashboard is covered with what looks like neoprene, which is a standard procedure used by all manufacturers to keep the interior designed safe from prying eyes.

In 1900, Rolls-Royce co-founder, Charles Rolls, prophesised an electric future for the motor car. Having acquired an electric vehicle named The Columbia Electric Carriage, he foresaw its suitability as a clean, noiseless alternative to the internal combustion engine - providing there was sufficient infrastructure to support it. Today, more than 120 years later, the time has come for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to fulfil the prophecy of its founding father.

This prophecy could not have been fulfilled without a more recent promise, when Rolls-Royce CEO, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, made a public commitment to electrification by announcing that he would bring a fully-electric Rolls-Royce to market within the current decade. Charles Rolls' prophecy and Torsten Müller-Ötvös' promise led to an historic moment. In September 2021, the marque confirmed that it had commenced testing of Spectre, the first Rolls-Royce to be conceived and engineered from the very beginning as an electric car.

To ensure that this transformative motor car was sufficiently prepared for the most demanding consumer in the world - the Rolls-Royce client - the marque devised the most exhaustive testing programme it had ever conceived. Spectre is being subjected to a journey of more than 2.5 million kilometres, simulating more than 400 years of use for a Rolls-Royce. On its completion in 2023, Spectre will represent a prophecy fulfilled, a promise kept and an undertaking completed.
