Venerable Audi tunificator ABT has given the new S5 Avant an upgrade package. We would say it's pushed it closer to a potential RS5 Avant, but since our heads are still spinning from Ingolstadt's naming convention changes, we have no idea what anything means anymore. So let's just call it 'quick'.

And 'powerful'. ABT has taken the 3.0-litre V6 and opened it up a bit, bumping the outputs from 362bhp/369lb ft to 434bhp/443lb ft. The 155mph top speed remains unchanged, but the extra 72bhp should help cut the original 4.5s 0-62mph sprint down a bit.

Visually, it looks like yer typical Black Edition-grade car. There’s 25mm lowering springs to drop it right down, and a full bodykit that includes a more aggressive front lip, inlet cover and rear wing.

Bigger 102mm stainless steel quad exhausts sit at the back, while 20in five-spoke ‘Prime’ alloys hide inside those arches. Why they’ve been named after KSI’s energy drink, we don’t know. Still, this thing looks good. Hot estates normally do.

Front-end looks a bit like the Honda Civic RS... Not sure I like the 'rounded' design.... always liked the more angular Audis.

The new Audi A5 Sedan will soon launch in South Africa, effectively replacing both the A4 Sedan and the outgoing A5 Sportback. Here’s what this new model will cost…

The new Audi A5 Sedan is scheduled to arrive in South Africa soon, touching down as a replacement for the B9-series A4 Sedan as well as the outgoing A5 Sportback. And Cars.co.za can reveal pricing ahead of the official launch.

The local B10-series A5 Sedan portfolio comprises 4 petrol-powered derivatives at launch. The range kicks off with the A5 S line TFSI S tronic, priced from R1 123 000 (for reference, the outgoing A4 line-up starts at R952 600, some R170 400 lower). The new A5 Black Edition TFSI S tronic, meanwhile, is priced from R1 166 800.

Both derivatives are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine sending 146 kW and 340 Nm to the front axle via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The claimed 0-100 kph time is 7.8 seconds, while the listed fuel consumption is 7.5 L/100 km.

Buyers who desire extra oomph – and indeed the added security of all-wheel drive – can instead opt for the A5 S line TFSI quattro S tronic (priced from R1 238 000) or the A5 Black Edition TFSI quattro S tronic (starting at R1 281 800).

These all-paw variants each employ an uprated version of the VW Group’s turbocharged 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine generating peak outputs of 200 kW and 400 Nm. Thanks to the extra grunt (and, of course, driven wheels), the listed 0-100 kph time falls to 5.9 seconds, while the claimed fuel economy rises to 8.1 L/100 km.

In South Africa, standard equipment for the S line grade includes 19-inch alloy wheels, sport suspension, LED headlights plus, LED rear lights pro, 3-zone automatic air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, MMI Navigation plus, virtual cockpit plus, electrically adjustable front sport seats, park assist plus (with a reverse-view camera), ambient lighting package plus, a powered tailgate, wireless smartphone charging, tyre-pressure monitoring and an 8-speaker sound system.

Until now you would have known the Audi A5 as a Coupe and Convertible, but thanks to the firm's new naming strategy that uses odd numbers for combustion models, A5 Sedan is the badge worn by the A4's replacement.

The new A5 has just landed in South Africa, with the 2.0 TFSI S-Line priced at R1,123,000 and the 2.0 TFSI quattro priced at R1,238,000. Audi is also offering these two in Black Edition guise, priced at R1,166,800 and R1,281,800 respectively. This places it at a premium over the BMW 320i, which starts at R963,000 in M Sport guise, and the Mercedes C200, which commands R1,095,000 in AMG Line guise.

The new A5 Sedan is the first Audi product to be underpinned by the new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).

Despite it being called a Sedan, likely to create a closer association with the A4 it intends to replace, the new A5 is actually a five-door hatchback. This makes it similar in concept to the previous A5 Sportback that it also intends to replace.

The A5’s cabin ushers in the new Audi MMI Panoramic display, which combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.5-inch central touch screen into a single curved panel with OLED technology. A 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger screen is optionally available.

Audi has also upgraded the configurable head-up display system, which can now be used to control vehicle and infotainment functions.

Replacing the A4 in Audi’s sedan portfolio, the new A5 has officially launched in South Africa, with the initial local lineup comprising a duo of petrol models. However, the German marque has confirmed a trio of additional derivatives (see below) will join the range in time.

The four-strong model lineup is priced from R1 123 000 for the 146 kW S line derivative to R1 281 800 for the 200 kW quattro variant specified with the Black Edition package. Pricing includes Audi’s five-year/100 000 km Freeway plan.
