Mahindra takes on luxury EVs with new XEV 9e and BE 6e electric SUVs

India's Mahindra & Mahindra is moving into the luxury electric vehicle market with the launch of its XEV 9e and BE 6e SUVs. These new models, part of the company's XUV and BE sub-brands, come with rather impressive specs sheets and very aggressive price. According to the company, the two EVs are ready to compete with established brands like Mercedes and BMW.

The XEV 9e and BE 6e are built on Mahindra's INGLO EV platform. The XEV 9e takes the SUV-coupe style with a sloping roofline, connected LED DRLs, and illuminated logo. The BE 6e adopts a more angular approach, featuring sharp creases and C-shaped LED DRLs.

Inside, both models offer a minimalistcabin. A two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated logo sets the tone, while a layered dashboard houses integrated screens. The XEV 9e boasts a triple-screen setup with a driver display, central touchscreen, and passenger display, each measuring 12.3 inches. The BE 6e features a dual-screen configuration with two 12.3-inch displays. Both models offer a center console with driving mode selectors, a gear shifter, dual cupholders, and two wireless phone chargers.

Mahindra has equipped the XEV 9e and BE 6e with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs. Initially, the SUVs will launch with a 59 kWh battery, with a larger 79 kWh pack expected later. The powertrains deliver peak power outputs ranging from 224 bhp to 278 bhp. Fast charging capabilities enable a 20-80% charge in 20 minutes using a 175 kW DC fast charger. The 79 kWh battery pack is projected to offer a range of around 500 km on a single charge.

The Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6e come with a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. An ADAS suite enhances safety and convenience with driver-assistance technologies.

Mahindra has priced the XEV 9e at ₹21.90 lakh (€32,400) and the BE 6e at ₹18.90 lakh (€20,300). The SUVs are expected to hit the Indian market in January 2025, with deliveries starting in February and March.

Mahindra BE 6e Pros​

• Looks like something that’s straight out of the future. Has a very unique design inside out. Surely a head-turner
• Powerful motor sends 282 BHP to the rear wheels (0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds)!
• Low centre of gravity, stiff suspension and connected steering offer a great handling package
• 79 kWh battery pack should comfortably offer 450 - 500 km real-world range. This is enough even for road-tripping with the family
• Lifetime warranty on the battery is a big assurance for EV owners
• 455-litre boot and the 45-litre frunk are good enough for family holiday luggage
• Fully loaded with a bunch of unique features like interactive rear LED strip, augmented reality integrated head-up display, infinity roof with interactive lights, 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos, selfie camera, UV filtration glass, auto-park with remote car control and many more
• Safety features include Level 2+ ADAS, 7 airbags, fatigue alert system, all-wheel disc brakes, ESP, front parking sensors, 360-degree camera, hill hold, hill descent, TPMS, etc.

Mahindra BE 6e Cons​

• Uncomfortable rear seat experience. High floor, difficult ingress and egress and limited headroom (due to the sloping roofline)
• Stiff suspension setup means you feel the bad roads. Ride is liveable, but not for someone looking for a comfortable suspension
• Concept car-like styling may not be to everyone’s liking. Will surely divide opinions
• Rearward visibility is poor, as is the case with most Coupe-SUVs
• Some cabin plastics don't feel premium in an otherwise loaded SUV. Excessive piano black in the cabin isn't to my tastes and makes it very difficult to keep scratch-free
• This car is extremely complex - we have concerns over niggles & bugs in a freshly baked Mahindra, especially the early batches
• Mahindra's after-sales service is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble. Wondering how many of them will be able to handle such a complicated car too
• Missing features like a full-size spare tyre (you get a skinny 135 mm space saver which will cap your cruising speed to 80 km/h), cooled glovebox, rear sunshade and no physical buttons for HVAC controls
• The usual EV challenges (charging infrastructure, setting up home charging etc.)

• Sorted suspension offers good road manners & high-speed stability
• 79 kWh battery pack should comfortably offer 450 - 500 km real-world range. This is enough even for road-tripping with the family
• Lifetime warranty on the battery is a big assurance for EV owners
• 663-litre boot and the 150-litre frunk mean you can carry a lot of luggage
• An endless list of features with some very unique ones like 3 high-quality screens, augmented reality integrated head-up display, infinity roof with interactive lights, 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos, selfie camera, UV filtration glass, auto-park with remote car control and way more
• Safety tech includes Level 2+ ADAS, 7 airbags, fatigue alert system, all-wheel disc brakes, ESP, front parking sensors, 360-degree camera, hill hold, hill descent, TPMS, etc.

Mahindra XEV 9e Cons​

• Rearward visibility is horrible. Tall headrests and coupe styling seriously hamper rear view for the driver
• Some cabin plastics don't feel premium in an otherwise loaded SUV. Excessive piano black in the cabin isn't to my tastes and makes it very difficult to keep scratch-free
• This car is extremely complex - we have concerns over niggles & bugs in a freshly baked Mahindra, especially the early batches
• Mahindra's after-sales service is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble. Wondering how many of them will be able to handle such a complicated car too
• The usual EV challenges (charging infrastructure, setting up home charging etc.)

On the one hand, I'm inclined to think that the cheap EV's are in general more reliable than the cheap ICE cars from the same manufacturers - less to go wrong.

But on the other hand, if they do go wrong... Fire...

Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition revealed

Mahindra has pulled the wraps off a new electric vehicle that looks like it drove straight out of a Gotham City garage. In a partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the company is launching the Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition, a limited-run electric SUV inspired by Christopher Nolan's cinematic masterpiece.

On the outside, the vehicle commits fully to the Batman aesthetic. The BE 6 is draped in a custom Satin Black paint, giving it a stealthy, imposing presence. Providing a striking contrast are brake calipers and suspension components painted in a color Mahindra calls "Alchemy Gold." The SUV sits on aggressive 20-inch alloy wheels that fill the wheel wells nicely.

Of course, it would not be a Batman edition without the branding. The famous Bat emblem from The Dark Knight trilogy is strategically placed on the hub caps, front quarter panels, and rear bumper. An "Infinity Roof" also features the logo, and unique LEDs project the emblem onto the ground when the doors are open. A special badge on the rear confirms its special status for anyone who might have missed the other clues.

The superhero theme continues inside the cabin, which has been transformed into a mobile command center fit for Bruce Wayne. The interior is finished in charcoal leather and suede with gold sepia accent stitching. The driver-focused cockpit is highlighted by a brushed gold halo, and a brushed Alchemy Gold plaque on the dashboard denotes the vehicle's unique number in the limited production run.

The Bat emblem makes numerous appearances, embossed on the headrests and even on the "Boost" button. Race-inspired straps on the doors feature Batman Edition branding, and the digital experience is customized with a special welcome animation on the infotainment screen and unique exterior sounds engineered for the electric car.

Beneath all the superhero styling is a modern electric car with solid specifications thanks to VW's MEB platform. The Batman Edition is based on the top-tier version of the Mahindra BE 6. It is powered by a 79 kWh battery pack, which provides an estimated range of 550 km on the WLTP cycle. That battery sends electricity to a single 282-horsepower rear-mounted motor with 380 Nm of torque.

Looks and power aside, the BE 6 is also equipped with contemporary technology. The Level 2 Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) helps the driver with tasks like steering, acceleration, and braking under certain conditions. The cabin is filled with screens, including one in the center of the steering wheel hub. While visually interesting, this placement has raised some questions about its interaction with the driver's airbag during a potential deployment.
