This post is purely for letting everyone know my issues thus far.

I applied for 20MB, took two days to upgrade. Line was only syncing at 17mb.
Had telkomza look into it and said that is the max my line can handle.

Today I decided to move the router to the main jack in the kitchen - I had a 15m extension running to the lounge
where the router was.

Checked line stats and got 20mb.
Decided to buy ethernet powerline adapter - Diddnt buy as yet.
Moved modem back to the lounge but I usually had the phone line connected to the netgear built in surge protector for the phone line (the one built into the power adapter for the router)

Connected directly to the router - checked line stats 20MB :D

Worth a try for anyone not getting max line speed.

Thanks to telkomza for all the help - Never thought telkom could impress me.

Thanks for sharing this, just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly the Netgears surge protection decreases your performance ?

I knew that extension cords can decrease performance but surge protectors is news to me !

By learning what a surge protector does, it should be obvious that it will subvert DSL signals. And that is does not claim to protect from the type of surge that typically causes damage. A completely different device, called a surge protector, does not create either problems.

Extension cords should only cause minor to almost irrelevant performance degradation. Adjacent surge protectors can be quite harmful to DSL signals and have even made some surge damage easier.

Telkom decided that upgrading all the DSLAMs to MSANSs was too much work so they just flipped the switch and now you can get 20Mbs over ADSL2+ if your line permits it.

Literally could of had this years ago, but it's a step... In some direction..

Not quite...

Not ALL of the DSLAMs can handle 20Mbps. The few that can as well as the IMAX units are in the minority, so folks must not get too excited about this.

So the real question is, how do you get to order a "Up to 20Mbps" ADSL line, if you get the following back from Telkom wholesale:
"Line is too long."

After insisting a bit:
"This is what will happen. I’ll log it for a 20meg upgrade, technical will test and see that the line is too long and cancel the order or offer the customer a lower speed."
