I think a new record has been set here for PMB :o

I heard via the grapevine that a transformer blew and they couldn't repair it because they have no spares. Could well be true because I know for a fact other services have made cuts to operations to prevent wear and tear because there are no spares available.

No surprise considering

THE Msunduzi Municipality has blown its entire overtime budget of R33 million seven months into the financial year — overspending it by a whopping R5 million.

Thanks too contracts for pals

A closed corporation, Starglow Trading cc, have accused the Msunduzi Municipality of costing ratepayers an extra R41 million by awarding a tender for a new high technology electricity and water meter management system to a Port Elizabeth-based rival company, Unique Mbane (Pty) ltd.

But that's not going to stop them from giving themselves a pay rise

Their argument was that senior officials in the other cities due for metro status, Mangaung (Bloemfontein) and Buffalo City (East London) are earning more.

The new deal would have seen the five deputy managers earning over R960 000 a year, pushing Haswell’s package close to a million. It is alleged the deal was brought before Exco while Mashoko was acting municipal manager. Exco agreed to the packages and authorised the mayor to negotiate and sign the deal.

*sigh*

Some people have all the luck. Would you believe since I bought my 5.5 kva generator (on sale at Builders) there hasnt been a single worthwhile power cut/failure. Not one! For years we suffered the cuts with a tiny little 650w that almost died from exhaustion.

Ok, clearly that rant didnt help your situation . . sorry . . has your service been restored?

Yeah came back up just before 7PM. I was just about spend a few grand on a generator last year because of loadshedding but it stopped just before I splashed the cash :p

Strange... I haven't been affected by it

Good news is that power will be restored to affected areas of Pietermaritzburg today at 7pm.

Here is the statement from the Msunduzi Municipailty:

"On Monday, 23 March 2009, at about 10.26pm, a transformer at Pine Street Primary Substation faulted, cutting supply to the following areas: Boughton, Prestbury, Clarendon, Phyphini, Wembley, Montrose, Pine Street, Berg Street, parts of Victoria Road and parts of the CBD.

At about 2.30am, power supply was restored through alternative ring feeds to Pine Street, Berg Street and parts of Victoria Road and the CBD. The other areas were still without electricity as at midday today, and we expect to restore power to these areas by 7pm today.

The cause for the failure is being investigated.

The contractors started working at 7am this morning to recommission the old transformer that had been put out of service in preparation for maintenance, by reconnecting all the necessary cables and overhead conductors."

In Assagay we had power cuts on Sunday, Monday, and two today (3 lasting about 6 hours each, and the other about 2 hours)

And to top it off the water was off for a while while they were fixing the power, go figure.

Eskum, nuff said.

Since the power went off around 10PM the supermarket's food could have defrosted by the next morning. When they start the generators the next morning the food would than refreeze which is a big no-no for meat. Should I be concerned about buying products from the shops this evening?

*lawls at the creativity of the Municipality!

Article from M&G - 14-03-209

"The National Taxpayers Union, a body to which the rate-payer associations involved in the disputes are affiliated, said about 220 towns were withholding their municipal taxes due to poor service delivery".The areas involved in withholding taxes stretched across the country and included residents in Bethlehem, Bloemhof, Kroonstad, De Aar, Ladysmith, Swartruggens, Welkom, Sutherland and Middelburg, according to the National Taxpayers Union

I personally think every Town in SA should align with the NTU & force the Government to act upon non-performing municipalities & service providers. Every residents association should act simultaneously in this regard to provide force to the movement. Sitting behind our PC's & complaining is not going to help!

Are you guys prepared to pay a bit more for your electricity needs by purchasing solar panels? Since we all know that Eskom's electricity infrastructure is old and not being properly maintained.

The power in the complex I live in was out for about 4 days over the December period because of a hardware fault, when they switched it back on it promply blew the thermostat on my geyser... lol... so that was just about a week without hot water.

Have you seen the Local newspaper today, http://www.witness.co.za/index.php?showcontent&global[_id]=25161.

This tender was created knowing that the product from PE did not work. The point was to award the tender, and get the money, of which certain people would get their kick back, including the municipal manager and his freinds. Maybe someone should also look at Starglow trading, and who is connected. You will find that their are Msunduzi people on both sides.

A word...

I have an intimate knowledge of the said Tender, and can assure you that there was nothing underhanded about the award of the contract.

In fact, the Witness categorically misquoted the various political, and civil servants interviewed for the article for pure sensationalism. I am sure if you would conduct your reearch further, you would find that The Witness retracted the said allegations, and published an apology to Unique Mbane and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the falsely purported allegations.

The UMSA Nelson Mandela Bay Project has been a resounding success - and implementation of the Msunduzi Project is to begin mid September.
