Hi All

Telkom's official statement of ADSL session resets every 24 hours is a joke! Even at 12 hours, it's highly optimistic.

I run a website using dynamic DNS, and so I have written a little program on my server to update my IP address at the DNS provider every time it changes. For interest sake, this program also e-mails me every time that happens.

Well, I VERY seldom go through a day where my IP address doesn't change at least twice. It changed 16 times on Thursday!!!

Now, either Telkom deliberately reset my session 16 times on Thursday, or the connection dropped and had to be re-established 16 times on Thursday. Either way, it amounts to the same thing. :(

Cheers

Get your line tested!!
I noticed a while back that for a day or two after it had rained i would get frequent reconnects. When i looked at my drop line their was obviously a time when a telkom teckie had simply connected the wire and bound it with insulation tape. I got telkom to replace the entire drop line and since only get disconnected once a day. Just had a look at the logs for the past 5 days i have been disconnected at 21h55 every day to within the minute.

Telkom is having major issues with their Cisco ESR software, that caused a lot of disconnects. If you are in the CPT area and connect via the Barrack St ESR then that is why. It was bouncing worse than a bad check last week.

Some of the others have been bouncing a lot.. not sure if that is why..

This is unacceptable. Most DSL users do not even use download accelerators to combat the dreaded dsl resets, it is an unacceptable practice to reset connections every x minutes.

Yeah, you're right. This is truly like in the movies where the bad guy knows that he is going down and now tries to take down everyone else with him!!!

Since their still in the "power position" they can do as they please which sux big time if you ask me, but since didn't, I wont say anything :)

I checked my Modem last night.. and I have not disconnected in ... 8 days  I am also Alberton. I'll check my start checking my IP addy though and see how and if it changes

Kalvaer...

It won't show but believe me, you've reset allright.

Like you said, start monitoring your IP's and you'll c :)

This 12 hours resets are gonna be one hell of a b|tch as far as idling on IRC goes :(

I don't know about anyone else, but I usually keep my IP address across resets. Haven't been paying close attention recently, so things may have changed some, but I've kept the same IP address for up to two weeks at a time before an unexpected disconnect (eg. maid pulling the wrong plug out) interfered.

My biggest concern with the resets is what if I am downloading and I get disconnected/Reset.. What about all the bandwidth I've wasted... We have a snowballs chance in hell of the ISPs/Telkom refunding us that wasted bandwidth. Now this does not matter if its 600 kb through email, or 2 gigs being uploaded to my File servers at work.. Who pays me back for all the money that I will now be wasting?
