I've got a 17" MacBook Pro ( 2009 ).

Under preferences, displays :

Color LCD 24” LED

640 x 480 640 x 480
640 x 480 ( stretched ) 640 x 480 ( stretched )
720 x 480
720 x 480 ( stretched )
800 x 500 800 x 500

1024 x 768 1024 x 768
1024 x 768 ( stretched ) 1024 x 768 ( stretched )
1152 x 720

1280 x 960 1280 x 960

1600 x 1000 1600 x 1000
1600 x 1200 1600 x 1200
1600 x 1200 ( stretched )
1680 x 1050
1920 x 1200 1920 x 1200

As you can see there are resolutions supported by the Mac that is not supported by the 24" LED, if not mistaken I am sure both these screens supports the same resolutions. Got this info after reloading OS X. Would like to know if the info. is correct for the 24" display or are in fact resolutions missing that screen are capable of that mine can not display. I am 100% sure the 24" was capable of displaying 1600 x 1200 ( stretched ) which you can see is now missing from the 24".

Thank You

What LED screen are you using?

Your Macs native resolution is 1920x1200 for the built in 17" display. Dunno what LED screen you have but I suspect whatever it is it will have a native resolution of 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 if it's the 24" Apple LED Cinema display.

So both should be running at 1920x1200.

Thanks for the reply, it is a 24" Apple LED Cinema display.

What is meant by native resolution ?

Thanks

What is meant by native resolution ?

The physical resolution of the panel. When they manufacture a LED/LCD/Plasma panel it is made with x horizontal & y vertical pixels in hardware which is set and cannot be changed. Ideally your computer should output the same resolution as the native resolution of the panel for best results but you can use other resolutions which the display will then adapt via built in software/hardware to fit the native resolution but this does not yield the best results as things might appear blocky or fuzzy etc.

Edit: Maybe wikipedia explains it better than I can http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_resolution

Either way set the resolution in your mac preferences for both of your displays to 1920x1200 as that is their native resolution.

Is there some one here using an Apple 24" LED Cinama Display ? I would please like to compare the resolutions that mine are cable of with yours ?

Thank you

I picked up a 24" Samsung LED display with HDMI for R899 at PC Zone in Ballito.
The local iStore has the 24" LED cinema display for R 10,500..
They're equally beautiful to behold..

Yes. You do the math.:erm:

Thank you Clayman, but we're not here to argue about the price of displays.

IPS displays generally start at like R5000, they're much higher quality than TN displays.

For comparison, check IPS displays from manufacturers like HP, Dell, NEC etc.

Fred, what are you trying to achieve?

Running the display at anything but 1920x1200 will look crap so why worry about other resolutions?

Got my answer from tech at iStore who was kind enough to help.

KNow 1920 x 1200 looks great but it is to small for my eyes, not all of us got strong eyes.

Understood but what was the solution to your problem though?

On most operating systems people would just universally adjust the font size to make things more readable. OS X for some daft reason cannot do this without 3rd party applications.

So if you want bigger/readable fonts with a clear display install Tinkertool - http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html
Set your resolution back to 1920x1200 if you have changed it and adjust the font sizes with TinkerTool. There are other apps out there that can do the same but they are not free.
