Hi,

New ADSL user here, not happy to say the least... After reading the posts I can see that i am not the only one getting screwed during office hours by our friendly neighborhood hellkom.

I wa ignorant and silly enough to go the 24 month contract route, any one been successful in getting out of it unscathed?

Regards

Repeat after me: DO NOT SIGN CONTRACTS FOR NET SERVICE UNTIL AT LEAST 2006 WHEN THE ZA NET LANDSCAPE HAS SETTLED AGAIN.

Yes you can cancel the contract IF you pay the penalties.

I cant believe people were suckered into signing a 2 year contract for a R700 router ... bloodly hell.

There's one born every minute

Hi there

Not Hellkom but the new Vodacom 3G, as much as i want it i also wont sign a 2yr contract for that yet, thinking of holding out, sure they will come out with say a 2G and 3G package soon enough that will be fantastic compared to the ADSL.

I agree with hArTh, why sign a 24 month contract for a modem worth R700, especially when you can get equivalent if not better ones for less than that! It's one months worth of subscritpion, IMHO rather hold out a month and buy one.

Not very useful info after the fact, but rather let it serve as a warning to potential ADSL customers.

I'm sorry I must have missed something.

I have signed a 24month contract. Telkom is coming on 19th Jan to install my ADSL.

1 Can someone please tell me why it's so bad to sign this contract?
2 Would one generally want to leave the option of switching to another provider for high bandwith instead of telkom?
3 Should I cancel my order and pay monthly and buy another router?
4 Can someone please explain what the big problem is instead of labeling me ignorant?
5 Is it too late to cancel the contract without paying penalties?

YES, that is exactly what you should do. As has already been said the telkom ADSL modem/router is overpriced (no surprise there), get yourself a decent router & go for the 30 day notice contract.

Also, unless this is for a business account, make sure you start with HomeDSL384, do not go for ADSL512 (you can upgrade free from 384 --> 512, but you pay R250 to downgrade from 512 --> 384).

Do you know if cancelling this contract is as easy as phoning a manager who could possibly edit my order?

No idea, but knowing that telkom have a tendency to over-bill, double-bill & rip people off, I would say safer to cancel (if possible) & re-apply for a modemless 30dn contract. The downside- you might wait longer for your installation, but you could also use that time to find a really good router thingamy.

I have a rude reply and a polite reply:

Rude reply:
If you cant figure out yourself why its a bad idea to lock yourself into a 24 month contract right when the ZA internet landscape is undergoing dramatic changes ... well then you are exactly the type of person that will sign such contracts.

Polite reply:

What do you get for signing a 24 month contract?
-A ****ty router worth about R700. You can buy far better ones for R600.

What else do you get for signing a 24 month contract?
-You are Telkom's property for 2 years. No matter if better and cheaper services arrive (as they certainly will) you will be forced to pay today's rates.
-Even if Telkom offer new cheaper services themselves you still have to pay the original contract agreed rate.
-You cant do anything if the service deteriorates.
-You loose all service provider choice and flexibility.

What you should do:
(1) Head bang the wall repeating "I'm a fool" 100x.
(2) Cancel the order ASAP. Phone and say you've been transfered to Pofadder. Lie ... be creative ... it's a necessary life skill.
(3) Buy your own router e.g. www.dlink.co.za
(4) Phone in AFTER original order is cancelled and get the month-to-month option.

In a nutshell: Why sell two years of freedom and choice for R700???

I agree with all the above but would rather suggest the netgear router. It has received better reviews than the dlink one. I have one and it has proved to be the bomb. It was easy to setup both the adsl and wireless config :D

The Billion Bipac 5100S modem/router with ethernet port is also an excellent buy at R570 excl. Or you can get the USB/Ethernet combo Bipac 711 for R700 excl. www.billionsa.com
