Twenty-six-year-old Siphelele Magubane was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for attempted murder at Verulam Regional Court, recently. The convict was arrested after he carjacked a 40-year-old man. The victim was entering his friend’s driveway when he noticed three men approaching him. One of them had cocked a firearm and pointed it at him.
The suspect then got into the complainant’s vehicle, drove off and picked up two other suspects on the way. The matter was immediately reported to police who began a search of the vehicle. Members of the SAPS Phoenix Trio Crime Prevention Unit responded to a distress call.
As members were patrolling the R102, they spotted the vehicle being driven at a high speed so they began to chase the stolen car towards the N2. The suspects then began to shoot at police who also returned fire at the suspects.
