Johannesburg - More than 27 000 police officers on active duty have failed firearm proficiency tests, the Sunday Times reported.

This was according to a performance report dated December 14 2011 by the SA Police Service's internal audit unit, the publication said.

The report said the majority of those who failed the tests were operational officers "who were supposed to carry their official firearms on a daily basis".

I'm sure the crim'nals be rofling at this, probably also gives them a lot more confidence knowing they can shoot and the coppers can't.

Is this why they shoot people in the head when firing warning shots?

You mean accidentally? You have to be quite a good shot to hit someone in the head from any further than point blank.

A cop should practice shooting every 2 weeks at least - part of the job IMO and if they aren't doing that then why they there. FFS peoples lives depend on it and so do theirs, but hey I suppose this is just a place they get paid???

Make more use of the reservists and make it easier for those willing to get involved and support the war against crime.

If someone fully intended to "fire a warning shot", but then hits the guy in the head, how can it be anything other than an accident?
Try opening up your logic circuits a bit wider.

Think you missed my point, if someone has not had gun training he is a lot less likely to be able to hit someone in the head, irrespective of a warning shot or not. Hence it happening accidentally is more plausible than on purpose.

Deliberately aiming to shoot somebody in the head can never be classed as a "warning shot".

A twist from Hayibo...

With work on the documentary already wrapped up, it emerged this morning that Kebble’s killers have now been hired by the South African Police Services to assist with officer training, after a Sunday Times report revealed that more than 27,000 officers had failed their firearm proficiency tests.

“Yes, we could probably use a bit of help with the whole not-shooting-the-wrong-people thing,” conceded SAPS spokesperson Crossfire Cwele. “And who better to help us out than a bunch of former hired gunmen with a 100 percent track record? These guys are the real pros, and credit must go where it’s due. Also, everybody is totally thrilled to be working with movie stars.”

Meanwhile, Johannesburg television production company, Lowest Common Denominator Films, took the opportunity to announce a slate of exciting new reality shows aiming to give up-and-coming criminals the exposure they need to make it big.

“South Africa’s got talent,” said CEO Stryke Iron-Hott. “Just imagined what these guys could do with a bit of coaching, a real budget, and a total makeover sponsored by Edgars.”

He said he had already started work on Murder Idols and Strictly Come Assaulting, but was still waiting to hear whether Wouter Basson was available to host such programmes as Machiavellian MasterChef and Ready Steady Die.

“South Africans are always bitching about crime,” said Iron-Hott. “So let’s turn this into something positive!”

and the beginning of the article...

JOHANNESBURG. News that Brett Kebble’s three killers would be starring as themselves in a new documentary about his death has reportedly excited South Africa’s murderer community. “These guys have gone from being nobodies to notorious hitmen to superstars in less than ten years, and with just a bit of basic business savvy,” gushed one murderer. “It’s really a huge inspiration to all of us.”

Although the casting of real killers in the film has drawn harsh criticism from the public, East Rand triggerman Wimpie ‘The Griller’ Wentzel described its “provocative synthesis of true-life drama, conspiracy, and underdog triumph via a subtle subversion of clichéd narrative tropes” as “the Cinderella story of underworld crime”.

Cape Flats hitman, Denzil ‘Sny Home Soes ‘n Snoek’ Daniels, agreed.

“Check, we’ve got three killers who walked because they agreed to testify against a drug baron who walked because after taking down the South African police commissioner and president of Interpol,” he said.

“It ends with the top cop in jail, and the state granting nine new weapon licences to three self-confessed killers. Seriously, not even Hollywood could come up with this stuff.”

This has the taste of political interference, I wonder if this refers to the initial training phase?

As for operational officers, I wonder where they would get those stats, as they may only shoot 1 or twice a year at an official range if that. This is mainly due to the fact that official ranges can only be found at the training camps which are situated far from most cities.

Your specialized units (K9/Flying Squad/TRT) will do firearm training regularly, most of it organized by the members and not at official ranges, so in them I trust.

As for reservists well, while most people regard us as Rambo wannabees, the majority take it very seriously and will arrange training on a regular basis, many go to combat shooting ranges as you find quite a few reservists that are trained firearms instructors, plus we usually have a good relationship with the guys from your specialized units and get to tag along when they train

Many cops will go through their entire career without having to fire a shoot. Not that that is any sort of decent excuse.

Over the years I also noticed that a large portion of officers working from stations on shift vehicles, don’t wear bulletproofs, only have the mag in their firearm and tend to borrow equipment from reservists a scenes

Fikile Mbalula said it was inevitable that innocent people would get caught in crossfire.

And referring to what he called "incorrigible criminals", he urged the police to "shoot the bastards".

:wtf:

Was just reminded of this quote by our lovely minister...Yes indeed, innocent people will get caught in the crossfire when 27000 cops cant shoot properly and these incompetent fools will def shoot to kill, i mean they cant really aim for anything less harmful now can they

In any situation involving shooting there is a possibility that innocent civilians will be caught in the crossfire and the chances of this will definitely increase if the officers on scene can’t shoot worth a Damm. (If they are not fit they the SAPS needs to either train them to an acceptable level or fire them)

But your reference to shoot to kill in this regard is wrong, they will more than likely miss completely unless they get lucky (image of cop hiding behind car doing it gansta style over the bonnet without looking)

We have had plenty of arguments over the shoot to kill policy on this site:
• Any wound caused by a bullet has the potential to cause death
• When people are shooting at you it is very difficult to aim for a specific spot
• When shooting if you try to aim you are using the sights on the gun not a scope so unless you shoot on a daily basis it is very difficult to hit a very specific spot, if you have shot before then you will know what I mean, Its not like a game where they sits stay absolutely still.
• When taught to shoot we are taught to shoot for the center mass as this offers the greatest chance of scoring a hit and I personally believe in shooting till the suspect surrenders or drops his weapon (dead or to injured to continue)

Not been funny but many people seem to regard these shootings as some sort of game, they are not. The person shooting at you is trying to kill you period, if after been told to surrender and they don’t, why should you risk you own life by sneaking around trying to get a shot which might or might not incapacitate the shooter in a non lethal manner. Your aim at that point is to put the shooter down dead or alive.
