I want to buy the 27" i7 iMac... and I see from other posts you have to custom order it from digicape, and costing R25k+. I had a look on apple.com, and with the current dollar rate (R7.54 = $1), I can get the i7 for about R17k. With all the import costs, it will not reach R25k, I think.
So, my question now is, how do I go about importing an iMac? As far as I know amazon.com does not deliver to SA anymore. So what other options do I have? Organise something with DHL/FedEx?
My nephew is currently in Canada, so I guess I can ask him to get me one and ship it to me. What will the cheapest option be?

When that is sorted, what must I do to ensure I don't pay a lot for customs?

Thanks for the advice.

Importing an imac will be painful, it's big and customs are not always kind.

R17000 + 24 x 0.01 x R17000 = R21080 will be the total including customs. I think shipping - if EMS - will set you back - see

http://pe.usps.gov/text/imm/ps_032.htm - see under Express Mail International and add USD $6.35 for $2000 insurance or more - see that page.

Now you have to find someone to buy it, wrap it up and ship it via EMS (EMI). EMI(EMS) do pickups so they don't have to take it to the post office though.

I guess with all that hassle it is not that bad an idea to spent the extra money and just buy it from digicape for R25000. It is still R4000, which is a lot, come to think of it. Why isn't there a cheaper option? Jeez, I hate the useless core-group.

If someone buys it for you there they will probably have to pay the local Sales Tax (which is probably not included on the Apple Store prices) which you won't be able to claim back.

Don't forget that if Customs stop it they will ALSO add VAT (in addition to duty).

And also, I suspect that if something goes wrong and you did not buy it through an SA reseller (i.e. it did not come through Core), they most likely won't honour the warranty or fix it for you ...

Best option is to find company who imports them direct and have them handle all the shipping an imports, what I do with all my Mac and Alienware orders, still works out about the same as trying to import yourself. Core group south afica handles all the Apple products, have them do it for you.
