Hi all, so my mom asked me to look for a new phone for her as she will be upgrading soon, she currently has a BB Z10 which is a dog of a phone ,the main issue is the charging time of 3Hrs and the battery life, so I would like to know if the S4 non-LTE version can force 2G only since 3G isnt really needed.

I would not like to get her a S5 because its brand new and we dont know what future problems might accrue.

Yes you can. Not sure if the standard ROMs support this feature but on my custom 4.4 ROM in mobile network settings I can select 2G as the preferred data option...

Works well for me. Only way I can make/receive calls on a Cell C.

On the main home screen, press the MENU capacitive key (right of the home button).

Select "Settings"
Select "More Networks" (4th option)
Select "Mobile Networks"
Select "Network Mode" a popup will appear.
Select "GSM only"

A popup will now appear, choose "OK". (If one appears)

A popup will appear "Searching"

And voila, EDGE (2G) is now enabled.

From what I can deduce it looks like the idea of 2G only is due to battery life? If that is the case I would recommend you not to bother. 2G vs 3G is not the major battery change, and in some cases 3G can even have better results on battery life.

To double or triple a phone's battery life rather consider disabling data. Typically when you see an "G","E","3G" or "H+" in the top bar it means that the phone has an open pipe to the network which it needs to maintain. I have not used WiFi extensively myself so I can't comment on its power needs, but I suspect that only disabling mobile data and keeping WiFi on will not show any major gain.

That said, if you are going to disable data it begs the question why a smartphone? There are also some apps which tries to optimise the power usage requirements by disabling data connections when the phone's screen is off, and activating it periodically to allow applications to poll for WhatsApp messages, Email etc. It does mean that a WhatsApp may only arrive 15 or 30 minutes after it was sent but I have seen quite a nice improvement on battery when I used it.

These days I am happy if I make the day and charge every evening. Maybe a side note - one of my old phones (HTC Hero) at home can survive a week+ on "Airplane" mode and occasional movie watching to give an indication of how much power goes to the radio side of things vs keeping the phone running.

From personal experience when my mom had her BB 9300 there was a significant difference in battery life when comparing 3G and 2G, also my phone aswell.

Who knows, maybe the BB is just a really bad phone when it comes to battery life, and she had 2G on her BB with BBM and whatsapp and the messages were instant. All she uses the internet for is BBM,WA and small emails.
