Hi Folks,

I bought a house recently, and in the garage I found a 2M Radius Dish. I have no clue what the specs on the thing is, it looks like its brand spanking new, The LRP(I'm assuming thats what the centre signal detector thing is, in the middle of it with the wire coming out of it) is intact and the cable looks brand new, not that it says a lot.

No rust on it yet, nada, truly looks in great condition.

Does anyone know what these retail for? I would like to get something for it...even if not all that much. But right now its standing the whole garage full.

Sounds like a C-band dish and LNB. You can pick up a few free to air channels with it, if you have a FTA decoder. Nothing special if your first language is English though.

Ya, I found the decoder in one of the cupboards. looks like its in working condition.

No clue on how much I can pawn the thing off for?

I know you can pick up an HD channel on some satellite with that dish, as well as MSNBC. Just get a cheap FTA decoder from an installer.

I asked an installer about those dishes once, he referred to them as "Jesus" dishes. Firstly because of the content you receive with it and second because of what you utter when you see one.

That's a good one. :D

Not worth keeping it IMO.

Ya, I'm not really keen on starting to dabble in the black magic of the FTA channels.
I got a free decoder as well, so im assuming if I hook it up everything will work, the connection points are in the house and everything.

But. I would rather just get rid of it. Unless it can catch some decent channels and sport etc. But i'm relatively sure it cant.

If a good signal gives you a rush like me, install a multichoice LNB on that dish. No storm I think will be able to rain fade your signal, if properly installed of course.

If it is a C Band dish, and don't assume it is just because it's 2m, sticking a universal LNB on it is not going to give you DSTV. DSTV is on Intelsat 7 and 10 which is Ku band

The focal point is a function of the geometry, not the frequency. So only the LNB has to change, and of course where you point it to, to get DSTV. Or am I missing something here?

EDIT: Yes, forgot now, those big dishes are often not solid but have "holes" in them for better stability in windy conditions. So the higher frequencies will not "bounce" off the grid of the dish.

Correct. You get mesh and solid C-Band dishes. The mesh will not bounce the higher frequencies effectively. Also the LNB mounts are different, although you do get Ku-band lnb's that look like C-band lnb's, as well as dual C/Ku-band LNB's.

...and frequency is a function of wavelength. C Band is around 4GHz and Ku Band is at around 10GHz. The dish is shaped to optimize the focal point of the waves on the LNB, if you get my drift... The C Band LNBs are also completely different.

Having said all of that though your main prob is still that Intelsat is on Ku so you will never get DTSV

dstv is still psuhed on c-band reception in africa last time i did a scan(besides the ku band they use locally)

Not for much longer... Not very good news for saffas in Dubai, Perth etc, who was actually covered by the footprint.
