Since Mweb has been throttling even on the premium uncapped package on 100GB per 30 days I was wondering wouldn't it be better to have the 4MB uncapped option which is not called premium but also has the "fair use policy" capping system in place? Price difference is small for double the speed

What would be better would be to leave mweb. They aren't any cheaper than Telkom but they throttle, why? Can't speak for afrihost but the 1gb account I have is amazing at p2p

Depends how much data you need. The 2Meg premium let's you use 200gigs before being throttled. Not sure on the 4Meg standard.

Why would you take an account that has a threshold? Go with another ISP as you download as much as you please.

Because not everyone needs to download 8TB. Sometimes you just want uncapped to not worry about a cap.

The point of uncapped is to download as mch as you want without any worries. If he goes with Mweb he's gonna have to worry about reaching the threshold. It's basically like a capped account that is softcapped.

I just went through the whole exercise myself in considering leaving MWeb. Much research was done. And I mean much. I am still with Mweb and upgraded to their 2Mbps service. Blanket comments like this are very little use.

Because with other ISPs my usage is more harshly affected by the download usage and habits of others through harsh shaping. At least with MWeb I know I am ok until I reach my own threshold. I have control.

What? Says who?

Maybe for the leeches, but normal people have more important things in their lives to worry than a cap. I know people that use 50gigs, but are on uncapped for peace of mind.

Same reason why I'm not on prepaid. It's too irritating to "topup". I just wanna make calls and it must work.

Why is the line cost on the 4mb and 6mb more expensive on the premium than the standard?, Surely its only the data that should make a difference?

Can't say. I would assume they would use the excuse that they subsidise the line more on the standard packages. Remember, they advertise it as an inclusive bundle price, I have split it out to show the line cost for my own benefit precisely to pick up the sort of things you just picked up.

Budget wise, I want to upgrade my 1MB Premium ADSL to either the 2MB Premium or 4MB Standard as well. It is, however, exclusively for gaming. I only download games from Steam/Origin and average about 40-50GB per month. So speed is what matters to me most. What confuses me is that according to Mweb's website only the Premium packages are prioritized for gaming on the Mweb network. As a result would the 2MB Premium offering thus serve me better for gaming than the 4MB Standard package?

If 1meg premium of working well for you now, just upgrade to 2meg.

As far as I know, both Standard and Premium use the same bandwidth, it's just the throttling which is different.

For what it's worth, I've been on a 4Mb Premium for quite some time. My line is with Telkom - also 4Mb. I recently went through an upgrade at the Telkom exchange where the max available speed was upgraded to 10Mb from 4Mb. There was an instant improvement on both the ping and the speed. When I had a "good" connection on the old exchange, I used to get a ping ranging from 18ms to 49ms and speed about 3.5Mb (using Ookla to test). After the Telkom upgrade my results were ping 9ms and speed about 4.7Mb. (has ranged from 3.8 to 5.0Mb)

I thought now would be a good time to upgrade my service from MWeb from 4Mb Premium to 10Mb Standard just to try things out, as it is almost the same price (R60 more).

The first thing that I noticed was.......... nothing. Same speed and ping! My guess is that Telkom is limiting my speed to 4Mb. So, okay, I need to upgrade that sometime.

The second, and most interesting thing which I noticed is that there is a now lot of buffering when trying Netflix/Hulu. So much so that it's not watchable. This is at a time when Ookla is showing a 8ms/4.7Mb connection. My guess is that there is a LOT more shaping that goes on with the "Standard" package. I think that I'd be better off rolling back to the 4Mb Premium package.

Strange, many people including MWEB Guy say that they use the same bandwidth. Would be good to get some more comparisons from others.

I'm on 6Meg Standard, used to be on 4Meg Premium. I don't experience buffering at all when streaming Netflix, Youtube, BBC, Rdio. Downloads and browsing also steam along at full speed any time of day. I don't use P2P downloads so can't comment on that.
