Ok so this is what is happening with my internet: i get my cap from my cybersmart and my speed (line) from Telkom which last month was 1mb but they had now upgraded to 2mb lines. when i was on the 1mb line my top speed on speedtest.net was 82mb but since i have my 2mb all I have is 1.12 as my top speed.

all i want to know if this is a general thing or is there a problem with my line.

FTFY

It could be a multitude of things, the most likely being the distance between you and your DSLAM and the condition of said copper connection.

Which server did you pick for the speedtest? I get the highest numbers from the Newlands (Web Africa) server and the MTN SA server under the Cape Town options. I'm always slower if I let it pick the server itself.

but have people with the 2mb line gotten closer to 2.00

I am with telkominternet and also had about 0.82mb on a 1 meg line - now on 2 meg line and getting about the same as you

Do you have a capped or uncapped account?
If you have uncapped have you checked if you have a 2Mb/s account?

Sounds like you were on a 1meg account and your line got upgraded so that removed overheads, hence the improved speed.

You need to upgrade your data to 2meg as well.

1.12 Mbps is faster than a 1 Meg account, even with overheads removed. It equates to a download speed of ~143 KBps, which is more than the 128 KBps that a 1 Meg account would provide.

It's definitely an attenuation issue, possibly coupled to a low downstream SNR margin. I'm having the same issue, my line only syncs at ~1.5 Mbps. It would help if he posted his line stats from the router.

I agree with all above. Check you SNR and Attenuation. You can find a post I did on it here from a combination of experts opinions.
I would check with your ISP to make sure you have upgraded your account with them.
Telkom increasing line speed does not mean automatic upgrade from your ISP as they are likely to charge you for it. THis is expecially true for uncapped users.

Tim

Hi Tim,

A slight correction to your excellent piece. The SNR value for your line is a margin, not a ratio, hence it is quoted in dB. It is the tolerance to noise that your line is capable of. This is why given the same attenuation and no speed limit in place at the DSLAM, a higher SNR margin will allow your line to sync at a higher speed than a lower SNR.

Some routers, such as the Billion 7800N, will actually allow you explicitly set the SNR margin that the router syncs at. This is extremely useful if you're having stability issues with your line, and wouldn't mind sacrificing a bit of speed for more stability. Other routers, such as the Billion 7300 series, may have predefined profiles (stable, highest speed, etc.) that allow you to accomplish this, however you have less control over the actual value.
