2Mbps on the cards soon??

They can't even manage 1Mbps, so how will they manage 2Mbps? Maybe they'll just block any web sites that people actually use, along with skype and bittorrent and email. Yes, then you can visit their home page at 2Mbps.

Does anyone have any suggestions for ADSL providers?

This 2mbps service was mentioned ages ago and we have heard sweet bugger all about it since. My understanding is that users will need to purchase a totally different modem which is in fact 2 modems in 1. The old modems (even the "new" black ones) will not give you the speed benefit when (IF) this speed boost on the network is introduced.

iBurst does not give near 1mbps (except in a few rare cases) but is more likely to deliver 200 - 600kbps. However, 3G/HSDPA also suffers from this dicotamy between advertised speeds and reality. Very few of us have ever experienced 1.8mbps! Most of the time it is more like 300 to 700kbps.

I get 1000kbps+ frequently on iBurst. To be really honest I don't need any faster. The service is capped and when you reach the cap it supposedly slows down to 64kbps which is still faster than dialup
but honestly I don't need more than 100KB/s. I download an occasional MP3, video file (180MB) and Mac OSX upgrade. Going at 70-100KB/s is fast enough. If the service was uncapped it may be a different story
but even then, who has the time to watch all the crud you download? I can pay R400 for 30GB of data burned on DVD-R, why waste the time looking for it, downloading it, burning it to DVD,
buying the DVD-R! hehe? I wish they'd halve their prices though, keep the speed the same.

Dream on!!! only a very low % of iburst users will ever see a stable speed of 2mbps IF the present company even bothers to try to up the speed.

I don't think you are speaking from experience here. Close to a base station you will easily get 1Mbit/s.
At my home I am several km away and get about 600-700Kbit/s

Please do learn to spell if you are going to use words like dichotomy. :P

You might get 1Mb/s during off-peak times, I usaully get those speeds 3AM when there is nobody on the network. My average speed during the day is maxed out at 200-500.

My experience with 2 or 3 towers in Cape Town was that you could get 1mbps quite easily when you are close enough. Daytime downloads still go at 100KB+, but browsing is slower. It's the same on dsl, the speeds basically start going up from 6pm.
