probably an iphone 5. are there anythings i should watch out for?

will i be able to wipe/reset one without hassle?

I would just check if it was in a body protector and had a screen protector as well.

Other than that, just factory reset it - or does the previous owner need to (Because I think you need to sign in with your apple ID to reset). But just in case he must show you that it is a factory resetted phone when s/he presents it.

Be aware that the battery might be knackered. It may be better to look for one of the officially refurbished units - they're pretty much as good as a new phone.
