2nd Modem thats popped! Anyone else had this?

Hi all,

My second modem has now stopped syncing. Log the call, the dude comes out, says my modem is stuffed. So I buy a new one, same thing happened now. The first time it was when they switched my line on, the second time now when they upgraded me to 4096. I checked my friends modem, and I know realise why telkom provides a surge protector with their modems, cause their f***ing lines are prone to surges. WHAT THE HELL!!!!
So I just got to keep buying modems? Of course Telkom denies everything...

I have 3 broken routers here. Now I invested in a R2500 router and had no problem so far. *cross fingers*
Telkom blamed eskom for the other router that failed! Which is a bold statement to make since if it was eskom the transformer plug would have blown and not always just the router....

its the second one now thats popped when doing some sort of upgrade or activation, its def their ***, cause they even called me before I saw my line wasnt working anymore. I think they can do it on purpose cause I was told I could only get 512 in my area. I think its like a spite thing....make me pay for not obeying and listening to the almighty Telkom monster god

My router was also destroyed by a faulty telkom line. Of course they couldn't care less about your blown device. I wonder how much they would care if I plugged in something that destroyed the device on their side....

ya i think i'm going to build a voltage multiplier and pass 10000V 20Amps down the line, or then again maybe I will just go down the road and take my baseball bat with me and go columbo on the first telkom van i see....****i ng idiots

LoL... i doubt that a large institution like Telkom would ever bother with spiting anyone =] =] , mayb one of the techies in the exchange tripped and spilt beer all over ur DSLAM, shorted out a few lines and tried to cover it up!

All telephone lines are prone to surges. It's a fact of line coupling and propagation. I'm no Telkom fan but this has nothing to do with them.

Accepting that, and being a n00b in the DSL arena, what can I do to protect my rather pricey router from having the same fate befall it - do you get surge protectors that shield the phone line?

Ive seen some nifty surge protector multiplugs that have a phone jack port on it. U do get smaller units that are specifically for phone/DSL lines only as far i know.

its just weird that in my previous place I had DSL for years with no problems. Since I moved into this place, I've been through 2 routers.

I bought a UPS and I see its got surge protection for tel line. I'm going to run the incoming cable through there and see if its ok, then wait and see if the line pops my modem again. I'm just going to buy a cheapy until I've found a way to stop the line popping my freeking modem. And I doubt every household and business runs their incomming line thru a surge protector and you dont hear them bitching about modems popping. Its def a fault somewhere, O well, freeking sux no matter what...the cost of having a s h i t t y dsl line in SA, continues to escalate....
