2x pc's dead after power failure

You have a cheapie UPS to smooth out the incoming AC? If the UPS screams constantly then your Hz is wrong.
 
yeah both my Ellies junk surge protectors are working, lights are on.. clearly did nothing.
All the PSU's work, swopped them onto a working PC and they power it no problem.

Haven't got a UPS.. don't think its a phase or anything like that as right now I'm using the same wall outlet for this PC and another one and they're perfect. And it wasn't even loadshedding, it was just the usual useless power failure tripping down the road or something, went off for about 3-4 hours.

The 2 PC's have been off for a few hours now.. still nothing. If the motherboard popped then surely I'd smell something, it's weird that the surge protector is good, the PSU is good, even the graphics cards are good (swopped it out) and I've had a lot of power failures in the last month and never had a problem before. The PC I'm using now is about 10 years old and has been hammered like a prozzie, still performs 100%.

Just a weird question what brand and size PSU do they have in ?
 
most recent experience along these lines (spoiler alert my GPU failed), power button on the PC had zero effect, no lights, spinning fans, alarms, nada

eventually went about it in the most thorough and systematic way I could think of by isolating components from each other to see what failed:
- tested the PSU by itself disconnected from everything and shorted the two relevant connectors, PSU powered up fine
- tested the PSU connected to the motherboard and nothing else, shorted the power up pins on the motherboard itself as the cable that connects those pins to the actual power switch on the case could also fail, it powered up
- repeated that test with the case power switch connected, it powered up
- repeated that test every time while adding components in one by one, UPS (disconnected for the purpose of eliminating it as a problem), then CPU, then RAM, then GPU and viola, with the GPU connected it was dead as a doornail again

dug up an old discarded GPU from a dusty closet and everything was back to normal, proceeded to cry on the inside when I saw GPU prices
 
ok so this mornings update.. the 1 PC motherboard decided to come back to life.. makes no sense. Picture the motherboard on its standoffs on a desk.. CPU attached, no ram, no hdd, no gpu. Power supply connected to motherboard only. Now this wouldn't work for an entire day. Then this morning I turned it on and viola, it works?! wtf...

Second PC isn't completely stripped down just yet, I just turned it off and left it.. that's still dead as a doornail.. I pulled the plug and now will just leave it and hopefully by the grace of Odin it will come back to life..

The PSU is a 1000w Antec Platinum series on the 1st PC. And the second PC is a 1200w Corsair. All my PC's are around 2 months old max.. :(

It can take hours for it to come back. Like I said before leave it for at least 12 hours before fiddling.
 
I've had a kettle plug power cable fail on me after load-shedding, have you tried swopping the power cable?
Found out later, some power cables have a built-in surge arrestor.

I had something similar happen, after resetting the little button on the multi-plug it worked again.

Yeah, mine was very strange. I have all my cables tied under my desk because I'm OCD like that. Tried troubleshooting the issue from under the desk. Next morning decided not going under the desk again. Setup the PC on my kitchen counter with spare power cable and it booted up straight away. Put it back under my desk and it refused to boot. Then realized it had to be the power cable and had to undo all the cable ties and replace the faulty power cable. Also power supply did not have a power LED to show no power going to the PSU, which didn't help with initial troubleshooting.
 
new update, still no joy on PC 2... I've unplugged all the power cables and removed the RAM, HDD etc, its just a bare bones motherboard and CPU. Will try again tomorrow with a power cord from one of the working PC's. I did put a multi-meter in the power cord and it registered 240v so all good there. I will need to see which of the 24 pins on the motherboard ATX cable is supplying 12v to stick the meter in there to double check power is getting from the PSU to the actual motherboard.. grrrr..

12V would be the yellow wires.

You'll need to jumper pin 16 green to pin 15/17 black to turn the psu on, this will also bypass the power button on the case.
 
In my similar experience, I have a bios reset button on the back of the mobo where the rest of the i/o ports are. Press that little bugger in for a second or two and suddenly the pc powers on again.

By the grace of Odins mother the last PC decided to turn on today! I had left it unplugged since yesterday around lunchtime. Plugged it back in this morning and it worked.. that was 2 full days of nothing, then poof it worked.

Very very weird, never known that ever. But some capacitor must have been holding a charge or something, once that had run out of juice maybe then it was like, ok I'm good to go now.

Thanks for everyone's help in doing this lobotomy, we have successfully operated on our patients and they are alive... for now! Until Eskom shows its hand again...

I had a P4 prescott that used to do that from time to time, drove me nuts.
 
Next time put a paper clip between the green and black wires on the ATX power connector, while plugged in, from the top, and then connect to power. Will boot up same time, if not MB def dead.

Keep an eye on it, you might still have a total failure in time to come.
